White Tail Taxidermy Eyes 3 Different Methods
Beautiful work!
Thank you
Does the skin get tucked in before or after the epoxy sets?
I used clay on this one and tucked before dries, with epoxy I usually tuck before it dries unless I preset the eyes the day before then I would rely on the glue to hold in place.
@@Dustinstaxidermy Thanks for replying! This helps a lot
Deserves more attention!its also very good :3
Thank you
good video, helpful :)
Thank You!
good video
Thanks
What type of gloss?
I just use a spray can gloss. Rust-Oleum 2x or Rust-Oleum high gloss lacquer is the ones I typically use but any brand would be fine.
Beautiful work. Well done. Very real looking. Certainly inspirational. Thank you Sir
Thank you!
What do you do for the eyes once you put the cast head on?
I set the eyes from the inside of the cast before setting the head. You just Dremel out the eye socket and place a ring of apoxie sculpt around the eye and set the eye how you want it to look.
@@Dustinstaxidermy thank you
Im doing my first bear, a pack mount. Should you always use an artificial nose?
No you definitely don't have to. Artificial noses you don't have to worry about shrinkage and has correct shape. The real nose you just want to make sure you remove all of the cartilage from the nose to reduce shrinkage and build up the shape with clay.
@@Dustinstaxidermy thanks
Excellent What release agent did u use
When casting this way in alginate a release agent is unnecessary the fish will pop out and usually the cast will too but it is a one time mold so it can also be cut open to get the cast out.
@@Dustinstaxidermy thank you buddy
Love your videos!!!
Thank you for the kind words! Hopefully they are somewhat helpful!
I think that's pretty cool of making molds. But why don't you use the original fence and just put a backing on them question mark that's the way I do them. I can see if the fins messed up and you want to make it look a lot better rebuild the fan you can use the right for the left just flipping it.. I get that one. But I must say you do some nice work. I do watch some of your videos. I do like the fish that you did the trout video. Awesome paint job and I like the way you build your paint
The main reason for artificial fins is there is shrinkage. By using real fins they will shrink and even with the added backing the rays won't be as full, where when I cast them they are ready to go and they have most of the original fullness. Both applications will work for commercial but I think the cast fins give a little better quality product.
Can you send me a picture of what kind of paint you use thanks
I use a powder tempera paint for most of my colors, not sure the brand I've bought different ones, but a black, browns, and greens are my typical choices. You water them down depending on the intensity of the color you want to show, if you spray from a bottle you just have to make sure you mix all the clumps out or your bottle will clog.
This is so cool! Does the clay harden under the skin? I never understood that part of the process
Yes the clay will dry hard, the clay used around the eye has lower shrinkage then other clays allowing the shape to hold better.
@@Dustinstaxidermy thank you!!!
What is it that you tipped the scales with..pearl- silver mix?
I used alcohol inks on this one pearl mixed with a drop of silver. Any tipping medium works well but they just need thinned to achieve the transparency to not overpower the base colors.
What brand is your painting stand
It's actually a computer monitor stand that clamps onto the table. It does work pretty well for painting though.
Beautiful skin mount. I have 2 rainbow trout, one 4lbs. the other 5lb 6 oz. Mounted in 1989 and still beautiful today. Treasured memories. Caught by my wife and 13year old daughter respectively in the High Sierras in Calif.
Thank you! I'm sure they remind you of those fishing trips and bring back the memories every time you look at them!
Hi Dustin do have the videos of the mounting and painting of this brown trout
Sorry no I didn't do any videos of the mounting process or of the paint job.
@@Dustinstaxidermy what a shame would have liked to have seen the painting process maybe next time keep up the great work

Where can I get this world class epoxy? I couldn’t find it.
It is a McKenzie product the code is WCE-4. If you order just request USPS if you don't have speed dee shipping to save a little compared. You can also use free form air from smooth on it's also a light weight epoxy.
@@Dustinstaxidermy thanks. I’ve been looking at free form air. Can you smooth and feather smooth with it too??
I don't have experience with it but have heard good things about it and that it blends well, I will be ordering some to try when I order from smooth on next though.
What type of clay are you using on the eyes? An epoxy clay? An air drying clay? Thanks for any help
I use aves critter clay for eyes on all of my mounts, it has less shrinkage than most other clays.
What kind of marker did u use
I actually used a dry erase marker for the spots, pearl ex powders mixed with gloss brushed on for adding the metallics.
What clay are you using for this?
I use plastilina non hardening modeling clay for the sculpting.
Hi Dustin ,im from British columbia . i would love to ask you a question about your fiberglass mold video of the w/t. Any way i can get a hold of you for a quick chat ? Thanks Daryn .. Northern Wildlife Designs .
Hi Daryn, I would change a few things in the process of it, but you can email me at dustinstaxidermy@gmail.com and I will try to answer any questions.
What kind of glue are you using?
I use pro 1 hide paste for this step.
Hey what colors do you usually use for the eyes on a brown?
It will depend on the reference photo that your trying to match, usually I will use pearl ex carbon black, dark brown, a little antique silver and brilliant gold and usually spray a brown to seal the colors in. It will depend on the look you want to achieve on how you apply the colors.
@@Dustinstaxidermy thanks!
Thats awesome!! I been have found that if I pre-sculpt the muscluature with oil clay, I get the exact look I want, but, I do the fiberglass resin cast and peel out the oil clay. alot of extra work, I will try this method thx!! I was never satisfied with just stuffing clay around the ear base and shaping the ear butts when mounting the deer. Still a greenhorn😅
I never tried that process, but this definitely should save time compared to that method while keeping your details in tact.
Thanks for content!
Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed it
Can't understand what the eye maker is gor blanks?
They are Jeff Lumsden still life eyes. 16mm with prepainted pupil from Matuska number is LEF16P or McKenzies is number LEP16. Other companies carry them and there's different sizes.
Great tip. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to give that a try on the next mount. Always looking for ways to make the process a little easier.
Thanks for watching! This will definitely allow the clay to stiffen up and stay together and allow you to not have to worry about smudging fresh clay.
Do you tan your own hides, dry preserve or send out for tanning?
I tan myself. I use either the Trubond or Pro-1 brush on tan.
@@Dustinstaxidermy gotcha. I was using McKenzie Pickle n Tan. Tried Krowtann, I think that will be my go too now. Awesome stretch. Ever mess with dry preserve?
Oh nice, I've used krowtann in the past it worked but prefer the tanning process. I've not done much with dry preserve just on small animals like squirrels but I've just been tanning them lately as well.
Awesome video. Do you get a lot of detail of inside the mouth ? Like gills and crusher teeth? Or esophagus ?Thanks.
Thanks! Casting this way will give good detail if the alginate is mixed right. The teeth will typically need to be rebuilt but mostly the detail will be pretty good inside of the mouth.
@@Dustinstaxidermy Thanks for the reply and the video. Great channel.
Thats so good!
Thank you!
Great work! Can I ask what you used to make the nodules on the eyelid
I just just used modge podge super thick gloss in a nose bottle I bought from a supplier. The thicker modge podge doesn't run as much so it's a bit easier to not have them run together.
@@Dustinstaxidermy thank you so much
Great job!
Thank you!
I’m a taxidermist in Ohio and I get so relaxed watching this channel
Thank you, glad you enjoy them!
Looks fantastic
Thank you!
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Do u shave down the eye sockets in your forms I’ve found I get better eye sets when I do imo they’re over sculpted on a lot of forms
Generally I will a little bit sometimes I don't have to but mostly i do
What eye protector was that “name”
I used fx creature liquid latex to protect the eyes. Most any liquid latex would work well I also have used Duncan mask and peel which is a thicker latex but works well.
Did u use workable fixatif between colors ?
I used a flat sealer but fixatif would probably work a little better
I’m a taxidermist not watching for help but man I just love this channel can watch this guy for hours
Thank You! I appreciate you watching these videos.
Great Video thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it hopefully it helps a bit.
Great video. Like the screwdriver technique. Really good information
Glad you enjoyed hopefully it helps out a bit!
Thanks a lot for the video! I struggled a lot with my first roe deer at the antlers!
Thanks for watching! Hopefully it helps, around the antler burr can be a bit difficult sometimes but the screwdriver helps
I can tell just by these soulful eyes this mount will be beautiful! I loved the cute little intro, thank you sir :)
Thank you Glad you like it!

Thank you!
Enjoyed your video. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for watching!
Black wash? Black paint diluted?
Yes I watered down a powder tempera paint for the wash
Nice job, I cast my trout heads using this process too. Thanks for posting.
