Advocating for the future of electric unicycle freedom
Hi fellow riders, friends, and viewers. Today, we're taking a ride down by Lake Washington to discuss the future of electric unicycle freedom. We speak about upcoming electric unicycle releases (ET Max), as well as briefly mention other brands and various relevant issues people have been dealing with.
I talk about my vision for the community (comradery and positivity) and then I invite you to consider what type of personal electric vehicle regulations you think riders should advocate for since we need to have a voice in the matter.
Because what happens with E-Bikes will surely spill over to EUC's in some way.

    Cars are the problem. Ban them and >99% of the serious accidents will disappear like a crooked politician's promises after gaining power. Plus we will have plenty of roads for everybody, and much more money to spare not having to deal with the wear and tear on the roads from thousands of 5000 pound insanity boxes.

    I have noticed that most of my wobbles come on when I do a hard acceleration and then pull up to coast too quickly, and that induces a wobble. So now when I do a hard acceleration I let up much more gently and that seems to have fixed it. Also firmer soles that keep my entire foot planted on the pedals seems to help also.

    You’re so right about the gate keeping and negativity around the EUC community. I could see a beginner looking in to the community, seeing this and being put off. At the start of EUCs over 10 years ago, there was so many nay sayers and haters. Sadly it set EUCs off to a rocky start. Now we can reverse this and really build up the community. Sadly I see the gate keeping and negativity from newer riders.

    As of last year, bicycles and pedestrians may “jaywalk” across intersections that have stop-signs or red light’s after yielding to existing traffic and pedestrians. Bicycles (and PEVs) can legally go through red lights and this has reduced the number of accidents and unnecessary infractions. 30 deaths/yr average before 2022 16 deaths in 2023 1 death so far in 2024 Do more laws make you safer? TBD Similarly, the Netherlands has removed almost all road signage pertaining to traffic directions and safety… and fatalities and accidents have been substantially reduced as a result. Laws do not equal safety nor protection, they’re only truly effective at finding scapegoats to blame for problems that are more design related than user-error.

  • @grb1969
    @grb1969 7 місяців тому

    {tl;dr. If I were smarter, I could make this more simple to read. Sorry for my limited ability to convey the concept of community consensus while riding.} The problem of differences in speed between vehicles that exacerbate the severity of crashes is a problem that the ‘law’ or ‘regulations’ canNOT solve through post-hoc punitive enforcement measures. {see texting while driving stats, which have only been marginally reduced by the advent of voice recognition}. In fact, while laws that require bicycle helmets have reduced the severity of outcomes, the accident rates seem unaffected when data is normalized. And, while gear does save lives, it also is not much benefit to those we collide with accidentally. If I were ruler of the world, I’d address technological problems with proactive technological solutions before attempting to inefficiently and bureaucratically capturing behavioral control. Unsafe speeds are both objectively and subjectively hazardous, which means that the magnitude of the impact of physical damage or emotional damage should be managed between individuals whom are in consensus about their mutual safety when in proximity on Public roads and trails. What does it mean to be sharing transit infrastructure in agreement and consent with others? Normally, the actions of others riding nearby is governed by our own experience and the practical rules that we self-impose so as to maintain our own personal safety margins. The cultural ethos of sharing is generally accepted when others don’t violate our personal boundaries unexpectedly. This means that ANY regulations that are dependent upon infraction enforcement are will likely be ineffective at mediating the ongoing conflicts that arise when people’s expectations are violated. On the other hand, if we’re simply looking to raise insurance costs, raise traffic violation funding or raise unconstitutional ‘Terry stops’, then imposing identification requirements on PEVs will simply result in municipal bans on usage resulting from the inefficacious legislation and enforcement methodologies. For example, speed limits do have limited effects on safety for those on unfamiliar streets but are mostly irrelevant when conditions require subjective judgment on whether it is safe to maneuver any given situation (i.e. black ice or animal crossings don’t give a fuck about your laws). This means that other sources of self-regulation are needed to negotiate the terrain, thus leaving the vast majority of safety concerns to the vehicle operators (as it should be). The question then becomes one of how we can use technology, such as telemetry, to modify our own riding styles to increase our own personal safety outcomes; we see this with PWM and speed alarms, which actively notify us when physical limits are being approached. That’s great for us individually but is almost negligibly effective when it comes to managing the social relationships with other riders on the road… so another technological solution is clearly needed to mitigate miscommunication between riders, drivers and pedestrians. Rather than explain this further in hypotheticals, I’ll demonstrate one of many possible ways that technology could help our communities self-regulate. For example, do most people driving on the highway, we have become acclimated to the reasonableness of two cars passing by each other at 50-60mph while both vehicles are traveling in opposite directions, where the combined approach speeds may exceed 120mph; this event is normal and raises almost no concern. Whereas, being passed by on the highway going the same direction can be unnerving when our speed differential exceeds approximately 15mph or more; for each of us, that 15mph is subjective and situationally variable in how much our mood is affected. If we were to impose a limit on how fast we should overtake each other, this would be non-enforceable except through random speed trap’s which would be even harder than speeding tickets to prosecute within an overburdened Judicial System (already in failure). So, relying upon laws and enforcement will definitely result in inequitable and uneven penalties and outcomes that have only a small impact on increased community safety. But, what if the manufacturers could coordinate a technical solution and what would this look like? First, another example of ineffective regulation can be see in the distracted driving of talking on a cell phone while driving. This problem of distracted driving could have been solved technologically during the advent of portable devices by programming all devices to turn off cell services when your phone is traveling at speeds greater than 15mph (this speed limit could also be made variable but I simplify in this case). If all cell phones were inoperable while driving over 15mph, the number of cell phone related traffic accidents resulting in injuries would be extraordinarily reduced. But, but, but… ‘it’s my right to be able to use my cell from the passenger seat, isn’t it’? … maybe so, but is it your right to drink a beer while being a passenger, no. We’ve outlawed alcohol for both drivers and passengers because the temptation to violate this norm is too great for those who believe that this behavior is within their own personal safety margins. Similarly, cell phone use while driving could have been technologically eliminated but instead, business interests were deemed more important than Public safety. (this is an example of systemic failure of our legal systems). So, how could we do this differently to be more effective? Are there situations where cell phone usage is warranted while driving or should an outright ban be imposed? Well, how about electronically disabling cell phone usage when the closing speeds between two vehicles exceeds a differential of greater than 15mph… such that calls get disconnected (with warnings) when two GPS signals converge to pass or approach during passing? Given the state of technology in 1990, this was possible yet completely ignored by regulators and corporations. And, while there are innumerable cases where this would have saved lives, nothing like it has been implemented for general purpose traffic safety. Pathetic! What false assumptions (delusions) must we be under to have accepted the casualty rates thus far… and we’d wish for more ineptitude in our bureaucracy to continue by imposing more under-enforced measures? I think that’s silly at best, but the evidence of unlawful searches and seizures tells me that this has enabled malevolent violence from Police and provides an unsatisfactory answer to the problem at hand. What if we encouraged manufactures to write an app that passively informed us of approaching cell, radio or Bluetooth signals so that we could modify our approach speeds in sufficient time to pass or be passed by others (within our own personal safety parameters)? What if violating these speeds were permissible but only with the “consent” of others whom share the roads and trails? That’s systemic mutual agreement, no laws required. There are thousands of rules one could request for themselves and that intent could be communicated automatically between riders who would then temporarily adjust their riding styles/speeds to accommodate each other. When self-behavior modifications were ignored (intentionally or not), each rider could then provide feedback to their own parameters or request (anonymous) that other riders regard the request more seriously. No legal intervention is needed for 95%-99% of rider/driver interactions, and there are non-Police related methods for incentivizing consensual behavior for any situations where non-compliance occurs. {there’s numerous ways to encourage compliance by other means but I’ll leave these details unaddressed for now. {… continue below}

    • @grb1969
      @grb1969 7 місяців тому

      {tl;dr… continued} Would you be willing to drive a car on a highway that had NO absolute speed limits, but did allow for passing vehicles to exceed a 15mph absolute speed differential only when separated by more than one lane? Can you envision a 5 lane highway where a pedestrian in the breakdown lane walking to the next exit would trigger a traffic warning personalized to each of the other drivers that they should slow to the appropriate passing speed such that lane 1 would slow to 15mph, lane 2: 30mph, lane 3: 45mph, lane 4 60mph, and lane 5: 75mph? Drivers could be informed with ample time to move over and increase speeds accordingly without needing laws, signage or enforcement. And the best part is that mutual consent can be maintained so the drivers can provide feedback to each other based upon their own personal preferences, which is weather, visibility, and terrain dependent. This technology (as I’ve said) was available in the 1990s yet no such solution exists… why? This brief example may trigger your own boundaries as it’s a voluntary system that allows non-consented actions between individuals (but it’s nowhere near as non-consenting as our current reality). Could a 15mph differential work on all roads and trails? How about sidewalks? 5mph but only if the rider’s skills are sufficient to ride at walking speeds or below? Again, this is self-regulating such that- if it’s possible to share the lane then it’s reasonable to expect reciprocal behavior. Personally, while skiing, I’ve ‘passed’ other people at speeds above 50mph differential but this is highly terrain and situationally dependent. Could such a system work in these spaces as well? I believe that it’s possible, simple and unobtrusive… so why wait for regulators when we can demand this from our vehicle makers and regulate only that signals can be used for this purpose of making PEV and motor vehicle traffic safer and more enjoyable at even higher speeds than are now available? {this is only one example solution. There’s thousands of different options and methods for implementation… but feel free to criticize the concept of what it might look like to have proactive traffic controls without the need for punitive and regressive policing.}

    Hi, good analysis of the future and the regulations that will soon arrive at your home (belatedly). I live in France PEVs are authorized, but there are rather strict regulations, you must drive at a maximum of 25 km/h on cycle paths preferably, otherwise on the road, and normally not on sidewalks unless we drive at 6 km/h in certain cities like where I live, it's rather tolerated. I pay close attention to pedestrians who are very dangerous due to their lack of vigilance. And here, police checks can be very punitive (fine of 1500 euros if you exceed 25 km/h, confiscation of the machine if unbridled during checks with a measuring device which is not so rare in big cities) . Coming back to the eucs, I don't really agree with you on the part of the eucs which exceed 100 mph. I think that manufacturers should return to the micro mobility side, namely eucs which weigh less than 25-30 kilos with still sufficient autonomy and a correct speed. Because now, we are absolutely trying to outbid who has the most power, the biggest battery, etc. and we end up with machines that weigh between 40 and 50 kilos, which is far too much. Let's come back to beautiful devices which are not at prices of 4000 to 5000 dollars or more but more towards 1500 to 2500 dollars or less, more accessible eucs, rather than targeting the vip of eucs. p.s: We must also insure our machines

    Im a truck driver, and I ride both a high-performance e scooter (Dualtron Ultra 2) and a small EUC (King Song 16X). I oftentimes find myself in situations where I'm not familiar with the area, the laws, the culture, etc. Therefore, I try to ride when there's not a lot of traffic on the road, and I try to look at a satellite view of the area around me before i leave the truck and go into town. On the scooter, in most cases, it's pretty cut and dry. I ride in traffic as if i were a legit motorcycle and follow the traffic laws. However, when I'm on the wheel, it seems to get a little more complicated because i know, in most cases, I really can't keep up with traffic, and in most of these towns the bicycle infrastructure can be a bit sketchy. Does anyone have any other suggestions that might help me ride more safely?

    • @ChrisH0Y
      @ChrisH0Y 7 місяців тому

      1. Be visible in traffic with either bright colored clothes or flashing daytime strobe lights. I like using a Guardian Angel light on top of my helmet. It gives me the options to be "loud" or "quiet" - loud(turned on) for when cars are swarming around you, quiet(turned off) when you are on the bike paths, trails or sidewalks. 2. Get a helmet mirror - once you are used to it, it gives you 360˚ vision. 3. Practice riding at leisurely walking speed so you ride smooth, straight, and not flail your arms around. It's harder to learn than going fast, and crowded sidewalk pedestrians will love you for it. 4. If traffic looks sketchy or you have the "gut feeling" about your route layout safety, you can always hit the sidewalk, and in extreme cases, pop up the trolly handle and walk it. It may be slow, but it's safer, and then get back on your wheel when you are past the hazard. 5. Find a place with a lot of potholes (our local boat ramp is excellent source of this) or a rocky bumpy trail with roots, etc and ride slowly through it all. This will tune your body for those unexpected bumps, potholes, train-trackers, gravel/sand-slides, etc that you will encounter in unfamiliar towns during your travels, where you don't/can't memorize the road hazards. You will get an unexpected "jolt" or "surprise" instead of a wipeout if you encounter said hazards.

      @ChrisH0Y I'll have to look for the guardian angel helmet lights. I was riding across a parking lot last weekend and a guy in apu truck almost backed into me. Fortunately we both saw each other in time and were both able to stop quick enough. I think being more visible could have really helped in that case.

    Here is a nice long post for you. I live in a small town. For the last 2 years (and currently) I am the only wheeler - active every day. I remember when I started riding, I rolled my EUC into our local cafe to have some breakfast with my brother, and his friend - who was one of the officers on our local police force. I was worried about riding on the roads, riding on the sidewalks - what was "legal" - I was "unclassified". I showed the officer my V12, told him how fast it could go, what you could do with it, range, motor power etc. I then asked the big question. Is this legal? The officer looked at me straight into the eye and answered. "You're the only one I've seen ride one of these things. Never seen one of these before. Are they legal? Well, that is entirely up to you." Now 2 years later, I morphed into our town. When I am on the street, I do car things. Go the speed limit, use hand signals when I turn, stop at stop lights and stop signs. When I am on the sidewalks, I do pedestrian things. I ride at walking speeds, and my balance at these speeds is controlled and true. When on the bike paths, I do bicycle things. Call when I pass not to startle, travel at pedal bicycle speeds, don't make people anxious and wonder if I am going to run into them. Body language is everything. If I really want to open it up, I take my wheel somewhere were people are not. Don't whiz past people when they and their dogs are out for a leisurely stroll. It's really the golden rule. Put yourself in their shoes, and then make your decision to interact. You reap what you sow. The town now finds me very ordinary, not new, but fun to talk to "Just that guy on the wheel" - Regulations? What are those? If EUCs become more popular in our town, I hope we will be boring in the eyes of regulators.

      Well said buddy! You're my kind of guy! I do the same in my town. I am always respectful and friendly and never spook people on the bike trail or be a jerk. I want to be that person that makes a positive example any time a person experiences someone on an electric unicycle.

      This is exactly how an euc rider should behave. Riding appropriately depending on the location makes a huge difference in how we are seen by the public at large.

    No one should be riding bicycles on the side walk at a fast speed, nor against traffic in the street. Same goes for PEV

Think who won't want cheap clean light weight portable near maintenance free transporters. Never thought I'd be a wheel rider Yet it's the joy of doing it that can't be costed out, can't be seen by watching it done. Once riding along to me it's a breath of fresh air, an uplifting relief, a pleasing difference, funny how acceleration can feel nice. Floating and gliding sailing skating skiing on a one wheeled cyber sled. It's very nice. You have a nice attitude about comradery, and logic yip that's gonna sting.
