What to do if your native pollinator yarden is DESTROYED

What to do if your native pollinator yarden is DESTROYED
I planted some seeds and to my surprise I discovered them but the problem is I have like 7 trees coming up in a bunch. My question is can I dig them up, pot them and hopefully get rid of them? If so what kind of soil should I use and what size of pot? TIA.
Yo creo que la fruta Paw Paw tiene problemas de manipulación y conservación ¿si?
Now wait a minuite how'd they make paw paw ice cream in Thomas Jeferson's time as you mentioned at 5:09? I call misinformation on that one.
Winter happens every year in non tropical areas! When water freezes it turns to ice, which could be stored in cellars or spring houses. The ice was used to make cooler recipes.
How come none of the ones I've seen in Northern KY and SW OH are short and bushy as you say most of them are then? Every one of them I've seen is tall and most of them spindly. Although recently came across a few that were incredibly thick in circumference (as big or bigger than my thigh) and very hard, basically unshakeable.
It depends on light conditions on the forest floor, if you have a mature forest canopy the trees may be tall and spindly reaching for light. If you have a big trunk, look for the suckers branching off from the main trunk
I'm trying to develop a new pawpaw variety with superior fruit. How many pawpaw seedlings, do you suppose, are needed before I have a 50% chance of successfully developing a new variety with superior fruit? 100 seedlings, 1000, 10k, or more? I'm starting with seeds that were cross pollinated from cultivars with superior fruit themselves in an attempt to help the odds.
I'd say it's going to depend how many of them can reach maturity to taste in 5-7 years. Growing from seed is a long road and you need to find the variables you are wanting to test. Is it a better tasting fruit that has higher sugar content or an interesting flavor? Or a longer shelf life that makes it commercially viable? Or earlier/later harvest times?
I’m hooked on pawpaw tree’s. Growing some over near Tallahassee, Fl Helpful video thank you
Paw Pomper
A+
Is it safe to bike ?
Yes! Just be aware it is a very steep hill at the entrance
New subscriber from Ky as well. Love your videos and personally love saving seeds. I also save my mustard green seeds this way. Once dried, I cover with paper bag and give several shakes. I'm always surprised at how many we save each year😊
Incredible! Thanks so much 😊
Just came across this. While our site in SW Michigan has lots and lots of spicebush, I cannot say I have ever seen a berry on any of them. Now I realize I may never have looked at the right time of year ;) And we have plenty of birds that quite happily eat all sorts of berries around the place, so if I don't look at the right time, any berry production is likely to be gone in a couple of weeks ;)
Trying to grow some 4 month old paw paw seedlings here in Montgomery county, Maryland! I’m a new enthusiast and hopefully I’m able to grow some trees!
Do you guys offer any tours of the orchard??? The paw paw fruit is a small obsession of mine
I found a patch of pawpaws on a property I aquired. I haven't really scouted thoroughly to see if there is more. Only one tree is of any size . Looks like a bunch of runner clones .
Silver is a better antifungal than copper , although more expensive. A silver nitrate solution might be something to try .
Awesome!!
I didn’t know you could sing. You have a nice voice!
Hey Jody! Kathryn here. Great video! Maybe the pedestrian bridge would be an interesting place for the next native garden. If weeds can grow there, maybe native plants can.
Glyphosate could lead to injury claims when orchard workers potentially including students get cancer from it. I hope the university can afford large damage claims. Do you know if your glyphosate is reaching the ground water? I would have thought its use would be criminalized after Monsanto was forced to pay damages to its victims.
Send me some
When I go on a walkabout on my property during Paw Paw season, I'll pick one or two and continue walking while eating, tossing the seeds to and fro. I've spread them all over.
Only they'll unlikely reproduce that way. The seeds basically have to be germinated and kept completely moist in order not to dry up and die.
@@jimjones-s7o There are exceptions to every rule, life finds a way. I've eaten from the fruits of my carefree sowing. Regardless, thanks for you're input.
Tastes like alfalfa sprouts.
What does one do with a paw paw?
You eat it .
It’s a delicious native fruit :) kinda like a mango and a pineapple!
I would really like some info on preserving pawpaw if you have any.
I want to get and grow some on my place and haven’t been able to find any where that has any
people eat Fugu , super toxic, super expensive. I love poke weed,, I know how to prepare it.
Very nice. One of my favorite happy places. Appreciate your informative rhetoric, without too much talking👍🏼
Did they happen to mention what grafting technique they were using when grafting the cultivars to the seedling root system?
Always wondered what it looked like in there. I once read about an L&N executive whose office was in one of those towers that was shot and killed by a disgruntled employee way back in the late 1800's or early 1900's. He's buried in Cave Hill.
I eat these all the time they over grow all over the place here in west virginia were i am at.
Love KSU pawpaws. I have one tree of KSU Atwood, one of my favorites
lapel mics. they're like $10. please use them.
I am surprsied they still get the fungus out in the open thought woudl only be on understory ones
My pawpaws turn yellow when ripe
I’m not sure what variety I have growing on my property but they have huge fruit that turns yellow when they are ripe. These pawpaw trees are a little unique compared to most that grow in the wild. For one thing, wild pawpaws always grow near water and these ones are growing at the top of a mountain. This is deep wilderness so these are definitely wild. I’ve been teaching plant identification and education, living in the field, for over 20 years, and have been studying plants for 40. I’ve eaten wild pawpaws all over the country my entire life. In all those years I have never seen wild pawpaws growing anywhere but next to a water source. What I’m saying is if you want some seeds or cuttings i would be glad to send you some. I would love to see this Ozark mountains variety spread and improved.
I wrap my paw paw trees with green felt in late September due to bucks rubbing on my fruit trees. It also protects the trees from winter sun. My trunks are perfect at the moment, hopefully they will stay that way.
I love information in pure form wind blowing makes it better. Thanku for this beautiful video and energy.
Only an evil mind would think like this. To say birds hide in bushes to scream at you all day. Why are you even here doing BIRD videos? I'm sure there is some hidden agenda there which involves throats🤔 disgusting
I’ve got 4 pawpaw trees that bare fruit on my property in the forest of southern Tennessee I’ve never had Deer do any rubbing on the trees!now they do love to eat the fruit!!I recently bought 4 seedlings two varieties KSU and Lehman breaders I’ll set out spring of 24 in my yard..thanks for information
Where did you obtain the KSU varieties?
Do you sell paw paw trees to the general public. I live down here in Vidor, Tx nat far from the Sabine river. When I moved here I was told that there were some wild paw paw trees on the Texas side of the Sabine river. I just haven't found any yet that's why I am looking to buy some 3-4 year old trees.
Only one track is abandoned, the other is still active. Was walking the tracks today ❤
I have both males and females at my feeder each year, as they come here in the northeast for their breeding season. I have a half mix of whole black oil sunflower seed, and half nut mix of various kinds.
Wow now this was creepy
Who’s laughing 😂😂😂 you have a very distinctive laugh!! EXCELLENT VIDEO
So they’re a pretty aggressive bird but seem to live peacefully with other birds!!
Omg where and how can I get seeds for Native plants. I ❤️❤️❤️gardening, and unfortunately my green thumb is hit & miss 😢 I haven’t given up on gardening yet but would love to try planting some native 🌱 🪴 Any advice or suggestions.
Definitely look and see if there are gardening groups located in your area! It is the best way to get seeds and plants native to your region quickly and cheaply! With native plants, they actually need lower maintenance so please save your leaves this fall to help create a better habitat and also smother your grass!
They are native to east Texas as well
13:50 And the most important, most desirable feature of a future paw paw variety is (of course) on nobody's radar: Self-fertility, auto-pollination! You can get maybe 1 in 1000 people to plant a fruit tree, whose fruit they don't know, cannot buy in the supermarket. But once you tell them "oh, and by the way, if you ever want to have fruit, you have to plant two different varieties and must hand-pollinate them", the number gets down to less than 1 in a million, who might consider panting such a tree. Here in Europe we do not have the kind of insects, that pollinate paw paws
@Ni-dk7ni Maybe in your country, not in mine. It's either a self-fertile variety or no yield.
I live in that area and not Night me and my friends decided to walk the railway starting at the tunnels and walking away. It was about 1 Am. About a mile in we can hear a truck down up and forth down the road behind us driving back and forth. We realized the truck was now in the field next to us but we didn’t see it. After awhile the woods next to us seemed to have someone in them following us. We then heard something stop in front of us on the train tracks. We turned about and ran the Mille back hearing the truck and people in the woods running next to us. We made it back and out alive but whoever was following us that hard, I’ll never know but that roads scares me to death now just because of that story
I just saw my 1st one perched on my bird feeder he was just beautiful
I love grow bags! I'm gonna have to buy the netting this year. I also have those same square planters and they are perfect for herbs and flowers! Thanks for sharing!
I had my first two male rose breasted grosbeak at my feeder today. 4/25/23 They are beautiful.
Just seen my first one at my feeder today 6.14.23. So beautiful. I hope to see more.
