Let’s be clear! This is just a fun way to stay motivated for Randonneuring during the long cold snowy Canadian winter. And believe me we already have a ton of snow this week. Also these are not ACP sanctioned brevets and the are to be undertaken at your own risk. So if you are as crazy as we are, feel free to join us in riding a series of 200, 300, 400, 600, 600/8k & 1000km brevet anytime from ...
What is Randonneuring? Reflecting on five years of Riding Brevets

I’ve decided to revisit the basic principles of Randonneuring after my first ever 200km brevet five years ago and update the video I made of my first experience. It’s been an amazing experience made most memorable from all the wonderful people Germaine and I met along the way. All video clips were recorded on my iPhone 14 and edited with the free version of iMovie on my phone. Thank you to all ...

Great thing you are doing here Regan, it is very appreciated
@@italofrancobravo thank you for joining us. We’re just having fun and keeping ourselves entertained on Zwift
Very helpful, thanks!
@@arusswurm4733 thanks and best wishes if you are riding far on Zwift this winter
@ hoping to ride far one day and doing that on the trainer is a daunting prospect. This may be a foolish question.. is it easier to maintain effort for longer by choosing a Zwift route with some slight rolling hills or is it better to look for the flattest route? For someone who is still just trying to build distance…
@ The best is choose the flattest route and choose a pace partner that you feel comfortable with. Then take frequent coffee breaks and rest as much as possible. You can do it. Take care
What would you use for a multi week or month bike packing tour for mid summer. Doesn't a large 17L size tail wag due to excessive size and weight?
@@StephanieHughesDesign I think for a multi week trip when you’re not travelling at such a high speed I think this is it less likely to be much of a problem with swing of the 17L sized bag. I think that’s more of a problem with shorter rides when you are trying to cover distance much more quickly. However, for longer, you should maybe look at trying to ride with either panniers and use a handle ball bag which may help you to accommodate more luggage. Hope this helps.
Really? 10% inclines? I don’t remember that anywhere
Another excellent video, Regan! I'll keep the link to your video handy, for cycling friends who go "glassy-eyed" when I begin to talk about Randonneuring concepts. With regard to gravel brevets, I don't think it's an "either"/"or": some of my favourite brevet routes are primarily on good quiet paved roads, with portions of gravel (or rail trails) to add variety and optimize the route.
@@johncumming8011 I agree you have amazing routes to ride in Ontario. Thank you for hosting us at your 2024 Flèche
can you extend the date until the end of the winter? I am in Mexico for 6 weeks without zwift
@@italofrancobravo winter in Saskatchewan is until first week of April. So no rush. Just ride when you can and send me your proof of passage 😄
Stationary cycling for long distances means constant body position for long stretches. In 2020, I did 25 laps of the volcano circuit in 3h15 to get a badge and to crack 100 km. Feet were too cramped to walk or stand at the end. After the first two hours, I recommend an hourly walk. Should not allow laps in a randonneur event, BTW. Not supposed to be on any road twice in the same direction. Unavoidable in most maps, though. And routes ought to be planned in advance, with controls. I think a 200 on Watopia without retracing should be possible. I might try a 200, but I think I'll wait for spring and outdoors before I go for 300.
@@ronstewtsaw I appreciate your comments. I just rode my 600/8000 yesterday and had to do multiple laps up NY KOM to achieve the elevation gain. So I agree it’s not strictly following Randonneur rules. But this is just for fun and a way to survive-40C with tons of snow in Saskatchewan. Please send me your 200km ride and I’ll send you a certificate 👍🏽
I love the idea of a randonneur ride on zwift that requires a free ride, and follows a route sheet. 😊 Maybe an option for next year. As it is, this challenge has a great structure.
@ I acknowledge that it’s impossible to replicate actual Randonneur events on Zwift. This is the closest I think we can come to randonneuring in the Saskatchewan winter. I would encourage anyone to just try to achieve the distance using whatever assistance they can, be that pace partner or group ride or on their own. Just create a goal and try your best to achieve it
I’m attempting a 24 hour indoor ride next month for the third year in a row. I wish I had seen this sooner! Also, 999 is driving me insane 😂
@@hartmain5443 I won’t ever mess with the Zwift gods again. I got serious COVID after that 999. Punishment I believe for not respecting the opportunity to do 1000. Have never been able to achieve 1000 since. Hopefully they will allow me this time lol
@@hartmain5443 sorry didn’t recognize your handle at first Hart. Great hearing from you
Hi Regan this is a very cool idea! I have never used Zwift. How does it work for taking breaks? does the game pause and then continue once you start pedaling again.
@@brentprockert5679 you can take a three minute break every 30 minutes without stopping your progress. Allows you time to washroom or grab something to eat. Any longer and your avatar stops riding. So if you stop for a 30 minute sleep then Zwift will record your ride count the stop time to the overall elapsed time. I am doing 400 today and will likely stop for a sleep at 300km mark. Just a fun challenge
No breaks 😂
With reference to some of your other questions, “populaires”, most scheduled events containing BRM (200k+) rides will also include some lesser distances, 50, 100, 150km, homologated locally, these are designed to cater for aspiring randonneurs who might feel they don't have 200kms in their legs yet, or experienced randonneurs with injury or too many accumulated years in their legs...the early part of all rides will overlap so everyone can stay together as much as possible. As rides are mostly unsupported it is possible to design events with rides (mostly loops) of 50, 100, 150, 200, 300, 400, 600... with the same start & finish where the beginnings and endings overlap and shorter distances branch off at various places. "Permanents":, most previously scheduled rides can also be done by members at any time, on their own or smaller groups, any distances but all locally homologated, these cater for riders who might not be available on weekends when most scheduled rides occur, shift workers etc but who might have mid-week free time to do rides.
@@LateStarter52 thank you for the explanation. Very interesting. Are the populaires ACP sanctioned and do the participants complete a brevet card? are they provided a cue sheet?
Thanks Regan / Germaine, another great video, there should be an award / medal for the great promotion, encouragement, inspiration that Germaine and you have provided via these videos. In my region there has been a lot of effort to minimise administration of brevets and this has resulted in minimising any manual functions required by the rider, ride organiser or other regional official. Many interactions have been reviewed with a question "is this absolutely necessary or just an historical artefact", as much as possible is done electronically. There are not enough people to do all the functions previously seen as essential, people want to ride rather than administer . Most (99%+) of rides are unsupported, riders organise there own accommodation etc even for 600, 1000, 1200km rides. Gravel is very popular and is homologated locally with reduced required speeds, we have "Brevet Gravel" rides with increased time limits if 40% or more of a route is gravel even "Brevet Dirt" for MTB/single track rides with much lower route distances. Thanks again, hopefully your 2027 PBPs are a bit more relaxed. 😀
@@LateStarter52 thank you for the comment, compliment and advice. I have previously been advised by Helen that there are fewer volunteers and more participants in all sporting codes in France which places a lot of strain on the various organizations. Seems a similar trend internationally. I think the EPP may help to alleviate some of the responsibilities on the organizers and thereby allow the events to proceed with fewer volunteers. Thank you for the feedback
This is an excellent video and I love that you emphasize this sport can be done by ordinary cyclists! Thank-you for promoting this amazing sport. I hope we get to ride together soon!
@@brendawiechers9955 I think Randonneuring is the most accessible cycling discipline for ordinary people and once they gain the necessary experience and confidence can achieve extraordinary success. We are still working out our schedule for 2025 and hope to visit your beautiful province soon 🙏🏻
Well done Regan ! Looks even harder than the one I tried this year ! I did a similar one in May leaving from Chartres and going to all the highest points in Normandy. Luckily I was riding with a group and we didn't have problems with the heat, it was a grey drizzly weekend. We weren't moving very quickly and finished in just under 39 hours with no sleep at all. When we'd finished all the hills we had about 30km practically flat to get back to Chartres... but then the heavens opened and we had a deluge ! Not sure if I will do another 600km/8000m, it was really hard.
@@helendale7668 your ride sounds a lot more challenging Helen. No sleep for 39 hours is courageous. Well done and glad to see you are still riding strong. Have a great winter
Awesome! I loved having a couple surprise cameos!
@@joshuahaley2755 you are very photogenic so couldn’t resist adding a clip of you and the wonderful Susan
An excellent explanation of a topic that is sometimes difficult to explain. Thank you. As for medals, I too collected many at first, but in later years bought only the ones that really took a long time and great effort to earn. I display them on flat boards with angled slots, so they are tilted back. Some awards are too expensive to justify buying, so the satisfaction of meeting the goal suffices. Coffeeneuring is a fun way to relax after the serious rides of the season are done. Permanents can be a lonely way to ride, but it's the only way I can meet goals certain goals (for ex, the K-Hound, 10,000km in a year award). Lastly, once I had not exactly a follow car, but something similar. It was 1:00 AM, near zero degrees and raining, and I was alone -- the final rider on a 400km brevet. I was concerned about icy roads in the last 80km during the overnight stretch through the empty Sumter National Forest. To stay within the rules, but keep aware of me, the organizer drove ahead of me and parked along the route. Once he saw me go by, he drove another 10-20 km further ahead and parked and watched for me to go by again. This was before tracking devices were common.
A really complete and well thought out video! Thanks you for your efforts. I have been riding seriously for 45+ years (got my USCF license in 1980), but am a complete neophyte in the world of randonneuring. Your videos have been invaluable! Stay safe and be well
@@stephendecker8371 Thanks for watching and commenting. I created this video with the intention that someone new to the discipline may be intrigued enough to sign up for their first brevet. Randonneuring also offers riders at all levels to create and achieve goals in cycling. I hope you have many great rides in future.
Super interesting and a lot of new information! Thanks, great video!👐🏽😊
@@jakobklinge_paracycling Thanks for the encouragement. My impression is that Randonneuring is an ever evolving discipline and the organizers constantly invent new goals to keep us engaged and motivated. I too am learning so any new aspects of the discipline despite participating for the past five years. Ride safely
Regan, you've translated the essential bits for new riders. I agree that is seems as if this activity would appeal to a broad base. It's hard to sell the time commitment, though. My friends have often had "other things to do." It may be that the best candidate for a randonneur is someone with "too much" time on their hands. What a luxury! When in comes to medals, I like to collect "one of each" for each new design.
@@SeanKeesler I agree on the time commitment. I am able to continue Randonneuring largely because Germaine has joined the sport as this allows us to ride together. I think I will collect a series each year 🙏🏻
@reganarendse6157 I agree that it helps to have a partner who is also a Randonneur. Even when Tim and I don’t ride together… he knows where to find me! 🤣🥰
Thanks for putting this together. It's the most complete explanation of our sport available. Medals: i still take medals for each brevet, and display them inside a shadow box for each year. I'm sure some day I'll be more selective. But for now, I'll take the hardware. Randonneuring is mostly an intrinsically motivating sport. The medals are a rare example of extrinsic motivation.
@@FredChagnon I love that there are almost an indefinite number of ways to challenge yourself in Randonneuring. Mark Thomas, Dave Thompson and Hamid Akbaran are the legends I aspire to be, all three hurtling towards 100, international 1200kms
Do you really get a medal for EACH brevet you complete or just one for each distance (and your whole series)?
@@brendawiechers9955 so far every one. Once in up to four 600s, and multiple 1000s in a season like you, I may have to be more conservative. 😆
I have been thinking about this style of riding since a Friend mentioned how I like the longer rides our club does. Discovering you has been like winning the lottery, you are a plethora of knowledge. Love your stories, adventure and excellent explanation of this discipline, Thank you !
It's so great to get this reminder of our adventure from the spring of 2024. It was my great privilege to ride with you, Germaine and Ed. I'd do it again in a heartbeat! Just say the word and Prairie Venteux will ride in Ontario again!

@@italofrancobravo I agree. The Randonneurs I have met during our few travels have always been super friendly and accommodating. I think the Fleche is a great way to meet others in what is sometimes a largely individual discipline. Hope to ride with you again soon

So glad to be quoted @2:20 😅. I feel like the route lived up to that description.
I initially thought, nah can't be that bad, but my goodness did the route live up to your description! Thanks for hosting us in you beautiful state and congratulations to you and Jonathan on creating this awesome and well thought out route. While I had to edit out the Maple Syrup rescue for purposes of keeping the video under 30minutes, I sincerely appreciate the glucose boost when I was in the doldrums. Seriously impressive.
Thanks for the vote of confidence, the video doesn't do justice to the actual beauty and steepness of the terrain. You have to ride it to appreciate it
Well Done Regan , what a huge accomplishment, thank you for bringing us along on this mammoth challenge.
Thanks Steve, this was a toughie and it was nail-biting trying to get to the end within the time limit
Great job persevering though this challenging ride! Looks like an amazing route. I am glad you were able to find some time to publish another ride video. Looking forward to more in the future!
Thanks Kevin, 2024 was an incredibly eventful year and is finally slowing down a bit to allow me to catch up on some videos. I will try to create videos of our Ontario Fleche and the Shenandoah 1200 events sometime over the winter
@@reganarendse6157 Sounds great! I have also been curious about your video recording setup on rides. I have used a gopro on small selfie stick but found it cumbersome to manage during the ride. May I ask what you use on the ride to record your videos?
@@kevinw5205 I just pull out my iPhone 14 from my back pocket, slide the screen to video and just record. I use the proper camera and not the selfie view. So I have to swivel the phone around to film myself. It takes a bit of practice and gets tricky if the road conditions change suddenly. Fortunately I have not crashed so far. I find it easier to record with the phone as I can just edit it on my phone using the iMovie software and just publish directly to UA-cam. I have a few GoPro cameras but found the battery life inefficient. May explore Insta360 which offer better stabilization and greater convenience for filming hands free. Also need to work on a proper sound recording system. Get too much wind noise with the phone microphone. Any suggestions you may offer Kevin will be much appreciated
Amazing ride and true grit, persistence, determination! Incredible to see the finish line 👏 congratulations 🎊
