Here you will find a wide variety of home movie subjects filmed by amateur cameramen over the decades of the 20th century from the mundane to the historic.

With date codes for 1960, 66, 69 and 71, this film covers family fun times. Noted in the aborad section is the name, Electra Palace Hotel which seems to be in Rhodes. There are then scenes of father and son enjoying seaside activities, a trip to the races, gardening at a caravan park (possibly the family business?), the cliffs of Dover from a boat and more seaside fun on the beach.

More footage from the 70s with two weddings, some family scenes and then off to the airport. Unsure of the location but the films are part of a collection with the names, Denis, Norman and Jean Goodwin attached. A short narrative film, it does have sound but unfortunately it has become very silent and there are some drop outs. Otherwise though, the story comes across.

This boy's football event includes trophy presentations, football and penality kick contest plus 8 boys introduce themselves to camera: Gary Blunt, Nigel Chitter, Wayne Johnson, Steven Mercer, Steven Furlong, Tim Nash (?) Only the first 4 minutes of this film contain sound, the rest is silent. This film largely covers three cup final days of the Dedman 6-a-side tournament. We haven't been able to find any particular team but the event seems to have been connected to a company (Dedman) sponsoring the event which can be seen on a banner in part of the film. The second last of our reels from Mr Davis' collection, a longer reel featuring some very nice holiday footage. Not sure where all the locations are but clearly identified are Gretna Green, Glen Shee, the Forth Road bridge (views to the Forth Bridge) and Edinburgh. Mr. Davis was resident at 8 Maypole gardens, Tiptree, Colchester before then moving to 17 Oak Road.

Where did it all go so wrong! fabulous footage of what WAS England!
The Centre in Bristol with grass people could sit on. Also the Italian Gardens in WSM with grass. No obese people or teenage twits outside McDonald's. Woolworths, The Coop, M and S the list goes on all now out of WSM and Broadmead.

Beautiful full veils they wore in the 1960's early 70*s.And decent gowns . The veil for Catherine Princess of Wales ..I thought spoiled her beautiful gown.Looked like a last minute thought ,and she used Grannys Parlour Veil . Pity.

I owned the exact same car on the video thumbprint a holbay h120 in mettalic blue
The Ford Escort was registered on 1st Sept 1978 and looks a year or 2 old so I would place it around 79 to 80 or even 81 Good way to identify dates on these videos is the car registration on the DVLC website.
The Edinburgh visit section here is also 1959, the floral Clock in West Princes Gardens having the theme of the 200th anniversary of the birth of poet Rabbie Burns, which took place in in 1959. Presumably both films were done in the same year.
Think this is Polperro model village! So the holiday is somewhere in Cornwall. Noticed the family went by boat to visit the model village!

A Sunbeam Rapier, I can't remember when I last saw one of them.
Used to live along the Esplanade at Shorts Way. Good memories of my dad taking us to play Pitch and Putt on the Castle Green. It was so much better taken care of back then--had a man who's job it was who had a little hut. Shame we didnt get to see the lovely old open-air swimming pool just down the way from the boat. Was that Arethusa or Medway Queen?? What a wonderfuly clean and safe country we used to live in!!!!!!!

We can't provide commentary when we don't have anything to tell. All the films come with next to nothing in the way of details. We rely on what notes may be on the spools or boxes and that's not always accurate. We do some checks when we find street or road signs or notice familiar scenes or buildings. Date codes on Kodak stock provide some help with dating but even that's not accurate and there are some anomalous codes. We also have such a large backlog of footage in the archive that all films are being given the minimal attention. We also have a very busy filming schedule all year. (In the next two hours we will be on location filming again). Archive material is handled in the rare spare moments and will slow off over the summer months and will pick up again in the autumn. We leave it to the viewers to comment with additional information and this has proven successful. We even managed to identify everyone that appeared in one of the films we uploaded. The pictures speak for themselves.
The earlier part of this film is in Wales (not England): the dam is possibly Caban Coch in the Elan Valley; the seafront with the large decorated building is Aberystwyth; the view over dunes is Tenby South Beach looking towards Penally, the church spire is St. Mary's church, Tenby ;and town is Tenby - with cars driving through the Five Arches in Tenby, which is no longer permitted. So that's a really interesting piece of archive film.

Showing Super8 home movies was always a good time at Christmas. Most everyone in the film was an unintentional comic . For whatever reason, everyone watching would laugh at the slightest thing. Sometimes in life, we forget to laugh about ourselves.

Great stuff! Many of these people appear to be their 40s or 50s, back then almost sixty years ago.
I love those Roses at 6:32 ish. I have looked for some like that. Do you know what they were called? I do think that some of this is 1950's and Thank you for this.
I'm afraid I don't know types of roses but I love their colours and smell. Dating these films can be quite difficult often even with Kodak date codes. There's a certain amount of style overlap between decades particularly with older people in the films. It's always helpful if viewers can spot something that gives a more accurate date, locations and events. Thank you for your comment.
I have seen films 100 years old with better quality and colors. Imagine filming things that you could film today and they would not have changed a bit. Forest and horses. 🤔
8mm film has an equivalent image size to 720p HD while super 8mm is equivalent to 1080p HD. Our scans are done at 1080p which means detail is already lost in the scan and with the compression factor applied by youtube these images are not seen at their best here. Additionally only Kodachrome film has accurate and true colours out of all film stocks ever made and is also capable of holding its colour for decades. We have 8mm and 16mm film from the 1930s looking as good today as it did when filmed. Other brands are not as good in both resolution and colour stability. Agfa, Fuji and Ilford films tend to last best after Kodachrome but other brands fade to red or err towards other primaries. Images can also be grainer depending on how the film was exposed and the ASA level of the stock. A film sensitive to lower lighting is grainier than a film for bright light. Kodachrome is a daylight balanced film at 25ASA and very high resolution. The quality of a Kodachrome image is suitable for 4K presentation. At the end of the day though, many of these films are shot by amateurs and most often not stored in best conditions. Overall the importance in these images is not so much image and colour quality but the record of normal everyday folk going about their lives. It is their value as a document of social history that makes them important and worth sharing. Colour films 100 years old would not actually be as good as these as both Kodachrome 3 primary colour reversal stock and Technicolor 3-strip were not perfected until the early 1930s and the Eastman single colour negative did not arrive until 1952. There are however some fantastic colour photographs over 100 years ago that look as fresh as if they were captured only yesterday.
Everything going North from the South West went thru Cumberland Basin. Avonmouth bridge was yet to open.
authentic time travel, but a bit of music wouldn't go amiss, no sound on the old cine reels though more is the pity. All characters but the youngest probably long gone now alas.
Sound distracts from the viewing and it would cause copyright issues. We also don't have time to go looking for music as we have a busy filming schedule every week and a backlog of hundreds of thousands of feet of film to get through. That said we do occasionally put together compilation features for venue exhibition and we do add appropriate sound and music where possible for those projects.
Observing how 'cluncky' the vehicles looked back then, it's astounding that men landed on the moon back then.

No litter, no fly-posting, no graffiti, decidedly undiversified ...... and you could still feed pigeons without being fined. I liked it then and I'd like it now, please.

I recognise that as Southampton. The grand building with the tower is im certain Southampton. yes i just googled it its Southampton Civic Centre. i believe my grandfather designed it or so im given to believe. Thats why it got my attention.
