@@sonjajohn-14 hi! We used manipulatives in the beginning with addition and subtraction. Our favorite were those glass vase gems with a flat bottom to begin with. We focused on like three new facts at a time and progressed very slowly but we were consistent in our practice. Then we added abacus work to our work. I have a whole playlist on abacus if you need it. I added in games to continually review facts we had already covered. It takes a lot of time and practice for kids to become more automatic in knowing their math facts. I can do a specific video on this if you like. That way I can do more showing. I hope that’s helpful! Don’t be discouraged. I’d just keep them practicing daily (adding new facts when previous ones are mastered) and eventually they seem to stick.

Hi! Thank you! I started with a-z in kindergarten, teaching all the sounds of those letters. We paired this with learning to write the letters and singing the abc's and listening to read alouds. Then when you start the primer you can just introduce the new phonograms as they are introduced in the reading passages. They are already laid out for you in the lessons so you won't have to come up with your own order if you're using the revised edition McGuffey's. I just pull the matching flashcards and add them to a review pile that I then use to start each lesson. I built this practice into the companion notebooks I created for these readers. Thank you! I feel like Number Stories does the heavy lifting for me and I just follow its lead. It's been such an enjoyable experience for us. We also like the colored illustrations and grabbing little hands on materials like clocks, coins, and an abacus to accompany our lessons. Those math facts take a lot of repetition though!

I've always gone by intuition how much to go over in a day for books 1 & 2. I can tell when the kids have had enough. I like to pair them with some sort of math fact warm up (games, flash cards, or worksheets) and then we go over a few pages of the book and do any work in our notebook. I'll make a video soon showing our current math routine! There are also pdf versions of the books on ForgottenBooks.com.

It's probably preferable but I think if you have a child who's already covered a lot of what's in there you could just explain those little details when they came up in the curriculum. We ended up not using these lessons and sticking with using the McGuffey Readers Companion Notebooks and the Gentle Grammar series. I do like this curriculum though and it was my second choice.

Yes I did! I used pdf versions of our math books from Forgotten Books instead and I ordered New West Press versions of the McGuffey Readers. @@landofkakiakahomeschool Aww, how sweet of you to say. I wonder if it would be a good idea to revise the Original Companion books to contain grammar and phonics lessons like in the Revised. Maybe it's not possible due to copyright or not worth your time, but just a thought that as least this Momma would spend money on it lol. The added grammar and phonics lessons/focus would definitely set it apart from Sherry's lesson books. Don't get me wrong I love the Lesson Book's versatility, but the structure you have in place in the Revised Companion Books would certainly be very useful as there isn't much available for the Original editions. Maybe to avoid copyright issues, just individual words could be in the notebook rather than sentences and then room for the copywork and dictation could stay the same as it is now. Of course I would understand completely if those notebooks aren't high on your priority list, but it's possible they might sell well due to the fact there is almost nothing available in physical form for the Originals.

@@landofkakiakahomeschool Yeah, I can for sure see why you would want to put it off haha. I can't be the only one who would greatly appreciate your effort! Whatever you do, please don't skip the Pictorial Primer though as I personally think it's even better than the Primer when actually teaching to read and spell. I believe Sherry Hayes shares my sentiment that the progression in the Pictorial Primer is slower and more gradual which makes it more useful when teaching - it gives repeated practice on new phonograms. I feel like the Primer is more of like a crash course version to prepare for the First Reader as it moves much quicker toward longer passages while containing far less pages therefore providing less repetitive practice on specific phonograms.

@@ShawnaDawn06 I’ve actually started at different points with each of my three boys (age-wise). I would start when they know all their base letter sounds and long and short vowels, they can identify the letters, say their sounds, and write them.

I love that you refreshed us on how you used to use the readers. My 4th grader isn’t quite independent enough yet so that’s how I’ll still be using it! Also thinking I need your RC notebooks and everything else notebooks even though we aren’t RC! Why thank you! I don't think we could really understand William until he was 4 also so I understand how that goes. Speech therapy was an amazing experience for us. I am thankful that it doesn't seem to cross over to anything and he caught up very quickly. I have eyed the Charlotte Mason books too! I love their manipulative kit. If I had extra money I would buy that set just to compare it to what I have and satisfy my curiosity. I'm quite happy with the Study Arithmetics series we've been using. I'm no math expert but I do feel that my younger two sons are doing quite well with math (my oldest started out in public school so his base was totally different). I focused on simply counting and basic number sense activities until they were mastered. I kept it play based (like games or giving them a block to build with for each correct answer). I think the key is just not to move on too quickly from one concept to the next and make sure they have it down. Sorry for the novel! Thanks for the question.

@landofkakiakahomeschool Thanks for the response! Our kiddo is 6, and he counts well. Just the adding is a concept that is not hitting yet. The math book definitely was an investment, but our whole curriculum was free, so purchasing the book was not breaking the bank. I printed the math workbook with graph paper and used the manipulative we have around our home. We had a slate, so I am hoping he will grasp the concepts at a slower pace. Thanks for all the ideas.. I learned I could make certain things instead of purchasing them. That is why I love your channel ❤️.

We downloaded the number stories 1 and 2 books...We also have a number stories workbook from book 1 downloaded.
