Interesting history lesson. I have several fine artists in the family and have struggled with the terms. Do I call myself a metalsmith, an artist, an enamelist? I primarily make jewelry, but can't really claim to be a "jeweler" with no formal education in the field. All of this terminology just contributed to imposter syndrome that, because I am mostly self taught, I already struggled with. I've had people say things like "Are you going to play in your studio?" Play, that term used to upset me because to me it was my work, but I get paid for "playing" every day in my home studio in beautiful rural Vermont surrounded by trees & wildlife. Your story helped me realize that the terminology has nothing to do with my abilities. I love what I do and regardless of what others may call me, I'm just going to keep playing. Thank you!

Is it actually possible to cut 316L stainless steel with a jewelers saw? i've tried with two different types of blades without any success. Also, is there any solution to treat copper rings with that prevents them from corrosion while being safe for frequent skin contant?

Or maybe I should pull it out of the mold earlier? Im listening right now to you talking about shrinking and bowing, so maybe the bubbles are happening as the front of the design is obviously drying last?

If using a silicone mold for clay foam: if you get tiny bubbles...any idea to eliminate them? I have a heat gun. (Im doing filigree designs. Intricate scrolling detail) and the details are great, but it gets bubbles as it dries. Would heat while still wet or in the process of drying it help? Because iVe tried adding drops of water before working the clay. Ive tried pressing harder. Weights on top. Ive also tried waiting longer for it to cure. No luck. And I cant sand as Id lose the detail =/ Thank you! 😊

You can use a larger dapping punch to get the rivet to spread out a little just my 2 cents !

thxs so much for this. When you were flaring the eyelet manually, could I use a countersink deburring drill bit and a drill press to slowly flare it like you did?( since I don't have your excellent manual skills to make it as even) lol Thx again for the very clear explaination♥☻☺

I believe you can remoisten the clay in the container to keep it from drying out.
