Understanding how memory works to improve your teaching
Переглядів 134Рік тому
"Levels of Processing: a framework for Memory Research" is a seminal paper that has provided the foundation for how to work with memory in teaching and learning over the last 50 years. Basically it showed that deep levels of processing for meaning are the most effective way to get concepts and ideas into long term memory. This short video uses a chapter in 'How Learning Happens' to summarise th...
Why problem solving activities dont necessarily improve problem solving skills
Переглядів 126Рік тому
Sweller clearly shows, through theoretical analysis and experimental evidence, that conventional problem solving actually limits schema acquisition, the very thing needed to become an expert problem solver
21st century skills are a waste of valuable teaching and learning time
Переглядів 177Рік тому
Generic skills like problem solving, creativity, and communication skills desperately need domain specific knowledge and proceedures in order to work properly. The more a student understands the area they are working within, the better they are at problem solving in that area. This means that a teacher must build towards inquiry based and discovery based learning by initially making sure the st...

How Learning Happens: Differences between how novices and experts learn and how to teach them
Переглядів 415Рік тому
How Learning Happens is a key book that summarises seminal papers in the Psychology of Education. This video summarises empirical research on how first year students in Physics learnt and reasoned very differently to Phd students. This contrast between novices and experts is vital for teachers interested in making sure they effectively teach different levels of students in different ways.

What is Germane Load and how does it relate to Cognitive Load Theory
Переглядів 768Рік тому
Germane Load is vital for good teaching and learning as it gets the student to actively engage and make sense of the topic in a way that systematically builds knowledge
What is Extraneous Load and how to limit it
Переглядів 215Рік тому
Extraneous load refers to all the extra stuff a student has to negotiate in a lesson in order to learn. A key skill of lecturing and teaching is to design the lesson in a way that focuses on what needs to be learnt and reduces possible distractions and confusion
What is Intrisic Load and how does it work?
Переглядів 158Рік тому
Intrinsic load describes the weight of the actual content or activity of the lesson, and it is vital for a teacher or lecturer to pitch the intrinsic load at a level where the student finds it hard enough to engage with and learn, but easy enough to understand and grapple with.
Optimizing cognitive load and avoiding cognitive overload
Переглядів 203Рік тому
A key function of teaching is to ensure a lesson or lecture is pitched close to the level of the student and uses materials that are designed for the task in an effective way. If the lesson is too hard or the materials poorly designed, the student can be pushed into cognitive overload. The art of good teaching is to create space for meaning making in the lesson.
3 types of working memory (intrinsic load, extraneous load, germane load)
Переглядів 1,9 тис.Рік тому
Cognitive Load Theory divides working memory into three types of load: intrinsic load (the difficulty of the actual task); extraneous load (all the extra crap added on); and germane load (making meaning of the task). A good teacher or lecturer knows how to set the task at the level of the student, make sure the learning materials are actually worthwhile, and get the students to actively make se...

I like a video that follows it's own principles, in fighting games I see a lot of content about "Mental Stack" and they're plastered with unnecessary sounds and visuals (obviously to make it more interesting, but a bit hypocritical and unproductive!)
Dear Wayne, we would like to find out about the services you offer. Please give us a shout.
