Phosphorescence Contemporary Poetry Series: October 2024
Phosphorescence October 2024 featured poets:
Stephanie Choi, Saba Keramati, and Samyak Shertok
To Emily Dickinson, phosphorescence, was a divine spark and the illuminating light behind learning - it was volatile, but transformative in nature. Produced by the Emily Dickinson Museum, the Phosphorescence Poetry Reading Series celebrates contemporary creativity that echoes Dickinson’s own revolutionary poetic voice. The Series features established and emerging poets whose work and backgrounds represent the diversity of the flourishing contemporary poetry scene. The 2021 Series will be a virtual event to ensure the health and safety of participants. While we are disappointed not to gather together in Amherst, we are excited to connect with a global community of friends and writers. Join us on the last Thursdays of each month to hear from poets around the world as they read their work and discuss what poetry and Dickinson mean to them.

Emily Dickinson was a letter writer before she was a poet. And it was through letters that she shared prose reflections-alternately humorous, provocative, affectionate, and philosophical-with her extensive community. While her letters often contain poems, and some letters consist entirely of a single poem, they also constitute a rich genre all their own. Through her correspondence, Dickinson ap...

pluck a riddle from the air - questions blow by, roll like tumbleweeds on desert sands, travel highways with no cars generations come and go - we gaze at those same stars - a penny, a dollar, for your thoughts - we wonder in our questionings a sigh, a tear,- breezes laugh - starlight winks - and something answers - as - still and silent, we stand - hear - the endless music of the spheres -

Well I was going to comment that in her lecture she didn’t mention Martha Nell Smith at all and then someone in the audience asked about one of Smith’s books. So my point remains, this editor did not bring in, especially at the moment when erasures were discussed, the name of Professor Smith, and I think it’s a shame, because Smith did pioneering research on this.

Thanks and congratulations to Dr Miller and colleagues! What a fine companion to your marvelous 2016 edition of the poems. It was in fact E.D.s letters that captivated me, before the poems. Now I get the sense of a long-awaited completeness surrounding her legacy - and yet her mystique remains. I hold all of it - the known and the unknown - as sacred.

I enjoyed it. Especially Jane Wald's clear narrative of the story. But, tbh, I was expecting more finality to the mystery of Emily. But, I think you gave that obliquely from what you gave us. We just know what we know, & THE POETRY! That's all we really need to know. Thanks again.
