A cat's hearing is unbelievable. True story: When I recline on my couch, my kitty likes to get on my chest, curl up, and go to sleep. Usually, that makes me fall asleep too! Anyway, during one of these episodes, my kitty suddenly brought his head up and turned it to the far wall in the room near the ceiling. I thought that there was a fly or something but, when I looked where he was looking, I didn't see anything. He held his head steady, ears focused, at the very same spot, just like Hank here. I still couldn't see anything at all so I (reluctantly) got up from the couch and walked across the room to look at where he was staring. OMG! There was a tiny little spider at the top of the wall! Apparently, a cat can even hear a spider well enough to wake them up!
