People will use whatever tools available. Good voice acting is becoming more like regular acting with the advent of motion capture. So there will likely wind up being a few movie star level voice actors and then the rest will be training models.

People act as if there was never any way to do things before AI. Indie games existed long before AI. Indie music, fanart, self published novels, all these things existed and thrived before AI was even a fleeting fancy in the mind of a programmer.

I can easily agree with Connor, even as an Indie game dev you don't really have an excuse, you could voice act it yourself, ask friends, ask random strangers, or even go into massive communities on discord, and just ask if anyone is available?

There are good and bad use cases for AI. If someone want's to make a game where they need voice lines to be generated/created on the spot then I don't think it should get hate. It wouldn't be possible with regular voice acting. But ofc, the AI voice should be trained and created from a voice actor they partnered with. I just disagree with the part where he says AI will always sound worse than a human voice, there games where the voice acting wasn't the best, and the finals that used AI voices, no one realized was made by AI.

Well the industry is changing and making larger games is far easier. VAs. If you want to keep your jobs. Charge 70% of what your already charging and do 2x the amount of lines. Otherwise. AI will take your jobs regardless because it can create dialogue on the spot In game like the Elder scrolls Mods. Were entering a stage where you cant charge 1500% percent per line and only do like 100 lines. Peope seem to forget you're not the star of the show. Its a privilege the devs even saw something in you and gave you an opportunity to be apart of their Vision. Their artwork. Anyone remember the VA for Bayonetta? The one that got replaced with an even cheaper VA? Thats your jobs. Or rewrite when Yongyea took that studios money and delivered some of the most awful Voicing acting for an English Dub. Like Dynasty Warriors bad. He didn't even fit the atmosphere of the game. Blame that on the director all you want. That's still apart of the VAs job to make something sound good within the description of the direction. Your kine of work is the kind of line of work you dont actually get to make a living wage off of especially now that tech is closing in and bullying poor people who are trying to make their Own vision and artwork a reality wont help you. If youre desperate enough to try and force yourself into other peoples art, than youre desperate enough to open your own dev studio and voice your own art.

AI voices always feel the most insidious to me tbh Something about them just feels so wrong and fucked up, even compared to my hatred of other ai stuff.

Getting thousands of voice actors to do millions of voice lines would probably be way too expensive, ai is the way to go but its not quite there yet

There are ways to use AI that both add quality and aren't hurting anyone. If you pay the actor that lends their voice, and they agree, then morally, it's fine imo. There are scenarios where paying per line doesn't make sense. It's an exception, rather than a rule, though. If you are telling a specific story, then you know what the lines will be.

There are so many ai bootlickers in these comments scraping the bottom of the barrel and bending over backward for the laziest excuses/copes and the weakest arguments/strawmans. All I hear is "I'm lazy, I'm greedy, I don't respect artists, i don't respect the effort or the time that goes into making art, i lack empathy, and i hate my fellow man, etc" There is no excuse plain and simple

Voice acting from actual voice actor for free is very much achievable, and sometimes you even get lucky. For example, didn't Sean Bean ended up doing the narration of a game for free because he thought the concept was that interesting he was willing to gift the performance ? I remember a story like that floating around at some point... And even then, plenty of voice actors would accept to do it for free to help get their names out there...

Common connor L take as always. Who cares if it's AI? If it's being used well and doesn't sound weird then it's fine. I have played Liar's Bar and the AI voice doesn't diminish my experience at all.

I can perhaps accept AI voice if it's thematic, or if it's a solo dev (which is a case where perhaps they don't have the time to find voices). Otherwise just get anyone with a voice to read something. It's not even like Liar's Bar has any complicated voice lines.

If I remember correctly, Sans is a Patrick Star voice line chopped and filtered into a repeatable sound byte. No AI. Animal Crossing popularized an entire subgenre of voice work in games that depended less on the voice provided, and Splatoon is carrying the torch. No AI. Pokemon used samples of various sounds to create the cries of Pokemon. No AI. Every excuse you can come up with has already been addressed years ago by someone in need of sound. It wasn't the stopgap that prevented people from pursuing or achieving their dreams, so acting like we're solving these issues now is just an excuse for laziness. And frankly, the Liar's Bar voices aren't solving anything. You could replace them with any method I listed above with better results.

I think unfortunately this is sometimes just what happens with more creator focused award events. For journalism in high school, we participated in the NSPA conference. The award segment just showed how a lot of people felt. There were a few schools, that would only cheer for the publications they liked. And for some reason, I still don’t understand why, a lot of the other publications in our area did not like us. Might have just been two specific schools that were from more wealthy areas, our school was fairly average. Some people just let their egos get in the way of what should be a friendly event

If you want my take. I dont mind A.I. in video games that much. As long as the person whose voice was used, get some sort of royalty or get payment from it being used with permissions, of course. I'm not against it, and hell in a few more years, it's going to be indistinguishable to know if the voices are gonna be people or not. That being said, i also appreciate the work done by actual voice actors and the effort they go through to portray their roles, and i agree that a very human element is being taken away with a.i being used. Im not super against it, but also not fully for it either.

Every worker for their own and other industries should be pushing hard against various different AI forms that directly replace work. It's about survival and sending a message to companies willing to bypass paying workers for a decent job.

I have a different view on this topic as an ML engineer and a digital artist (sorry for the essaying in advance). The issue with AI for me is when it is used in an illegal framework, ie using copyrighted data without the owner's permission to replicate their art, voice, writing, photos, videos etc. However, if someone willingly went out of their way to provide their voice for an ML model, I don't see this as wrong or immoral. I get that automation takes away jobs, but hating something because it is "made by AI" seems childish and hypocritical to me. A lot of our day-to-day products are manufactured by machines. Products that were once pieces of art to signify the skill and craftsmanship of the person behind it. If these skills weren't automated, the price, time, scalability, and availability of said products would've vastly differed to the average consumer today. And as much as I don't like to see the intrusive AI slob spammed in my feed, I don't think hating or ignoring the technology altogether is a solution that is productive or sensible. Just because someone uses AI tools to build products quicker and cheaper doesn't make them a bad person or make the product bad as long as everything lies in a legal framework. If the game uses AI badly, then it's a bad game. If a game uses it well and does everything a game is supposed to do, then I see no reason to hate it just because it has elements made by AI. Again, the only instance where I see this as a negative is when it is done in an illegal framework or using tools built on illegal trained models. Or, of course, used to lazily make trash content to spam in people's feeds. But that's just my opinion.

It's like AI is great until it comes for your job specifically. Can we just agree that AI is awful for all of us in general.

Will the VA do it for free? I disagree with with Connor on this take. He is a professional so he probably wouldn't take a job for free. Get friends to help you, sure that can work, but soubt you'd feel good if the game because successful and you didn't give money to your friends, even retrospectively if you give them money afterwards. Will the VA do it for revenue share? Maybe, problem with that is making a contract which again costs money to do, which the small indie creator doesn't have. So the solution is not having voice lines. Sure it can work, but certain games need it to build up atmosphere. There was the Undertale example in the comments, which is valid, but don't forget there is a lot of music and what helps it is the world building. Compared to something like Liar's bar where you mostly just sit around and interact with other people, you need some kind of enhacer for the atmosphere. I'm on the side that doesn't care if it is AI or not, be it voices or art. If I won't like the voices I won't play it, as there VA that people dislike too and avoid things they are in. It all boils down to supply and demand and if there is a cheaper alternative to make something.

He is a voice actor so I get his point but at the same time he will miss great indie games with not enough money to hire VAs and I think VAs should licence their voice for the using with those programmes. But with terms that explain how the licences cannot be used and that at a amount of earnings the developers and other companies have to pay the VA to voice directly (if possible) or pay a higher cost for still using it. Kinda like with the unreal engine. That way people with less money still can afford using voices of real VAs and the VAs still can earn money without too much work. A win win. Especially if the voice program only uses a local database on the users system filled with the licensed voice packs. Big companies should ALWAYS invest money for real voice actors! Even if they use AI for things a VA can't do like speaking directly to the player like saying their names, giving them sub names aso. 4:13 TTS IS THE SAME AS "AI"! Both are orograms you "train" with a database! And that you also can directly like vedal do with neuro-sama! - what we call today "AI" isn't even a real artificial intelligence! Those are still the same programs we even had in SNES games only that they can work with far more datas than before and do much more. Real AI could do all that by creating totally new things with less data. Like humans! But the moment you remove dome of the datas of an AI of today they will no longer be sble to do the same thing. 5 years. That will be enough to change the legal use of FAIPs (Fake Artificial Intelligence Programmes). Big concerns will change the use just for still sell their products. But no law of the world will ever stop crime or scam. In japan you will get killed for murdering without knowing when it will happen and people still murder others there. Laws only reduce the numbers. FAIPs are great tools! Nothing more. I learned here that there are cheap VAs what could help me in the future!

He makes a good point. There a lot of artists and voice actors out there who are looking for work for super cheap. Artists and actors already get payed pretty poorly and many of them struggle to get work as it is. Plus theres the obvious it was trained on others work thing, it really feels lazy and unethical, especially for a low budget indie game like liars bar. Just hire someone on fiver or worse case have a buddy do it.

He is wrong on the fact that you have to train the tts the same is true for AI too. On the other hand it is more difficult to train AI models than tts they require a lot more data usually they just use the AI model which is already trained or get it trained by professionals. (I do not disagree that AI should not be used for voice acting just wanted to point it out where he was wrong)

I feel like the tts vs ai voice conversation is worth having at least a little bit because a line has to be drawn somewhere and agreed upon. A good example is my Kamioshi Zentreya, she is sweet and hilarious but uses a tts voice for personal reasons, that's totally fine, however she has also recorded lines for animations and in Smite with the tts voice, so is that also bad or does she get a pass? it's not me trying to be rude it's a genuine question and she has lots of personality even with the tts and is a very sweet person, but I really do wonder where the line is exactly for using "fake" voices in professional media.

This comment section is the perfect demonstration of why you should avoid using AI art or voice acting. Even if you personally think AI voice acting is fine, you cannot deny it's controversial. You end up having people, like Connor, who don't want to play your game on stream. It's bad publicity. You're getting yourself involved in a debate you don't need to get yourself into. As he said, you could just... not have voice acting. Like, if you really really can't afford it, then maybe just don't have any. I mean, for crying out loud, even games by big companies are sometimes devoid of voice acting. Like, remember when Zelda didn't really have any voiced lines? Heck, even Persona, until recently, had many, many lines that weren't voiced. If you think, despite all that, that you absolutely need voice acting and can't afford an actual voice actor, then at the very least look into how the AI was trained. Cuz I think it shouldn't be trained on voices of people who did not consent to it. The idea that it's "just a tool" falls apart when it steals the work of actual artists, and I'm very far from being the only one to think that. And, of course, if you end up making enough money to afford a voice actor to replace the AI voice, then do so. It's a way to show some respect for the actual artists.

The only AI voice that is not bs is being used for background generic NPC who only wandering around at the background. Make those generic NPC can adapt to their surrounding and to you, the player, and respond accordingly fluently. I can see how AI can be use in that way.

But here is the thing. Most people don't care. They want product. Whats happening behind the scenes is non of their concern.

I’d take no voice acting over ai voices, and ai voices over bad voice acting, which is most voice acting.

There's also been devs/creators with projects that don't really require professional VA they just need some voice clips. They'll use their own voice and other staff members and alter the pitch.

Not a game, but an indie project, If the Emperor had a Text To Speech device didn’t use “AI” or text to speech for some later characters who are literal robot men. Instead they had voice actors, and for the most robot of robot men, they used 3 voice actors for that one character. As far as I know, only the chair bound, almost corpse uses a text to speech. So even a small studio can pay a guy for a day for some lines.
