    Thanks for the pattern. About to tie up a few. I used your Pot scrubber the other day to great success on the Waioeka River. I didn't have much success last December on the Tyenna River in Tasmania but did manage to snare a few on small dries (18) representing insects hatching from the T trees. I'm off to fish the Tongariro soon and am keen to try a weighted version of the Pot Scrubber. Tight lines and regards from NZ.

    Thanks Bruce, just found this and am very happy I did. My fur flies do OK but I've always been a bit frustrated in that I knew I wasn't matching the hatch a lot of the time. Now to find a source of duck feathers that size. Times have changed and don't have a shotgun anymore. Thanks for sharing.

    Nicely done. Just returned to NZ after a couple of weeks in Tasmania fishing the Styx and Tyenna Rivers. Success was limited to small browns caught on a size 16 flashback pheasant tail tied onto the barb of a dry size 16 white tea tree moth. Really enjoyed the friendly people and abundant wildlife and will return to the northern lakes next year. Kind regards from NZ..

    I really enjoyed your in-depth explanation of what looks to be a very natural pattern. I will replicate it for my local river in NZ and make a few extra for my December trip to Tasmania. I have added a few black seal fibers to the firey brown and chocolate wool and placed them into a split !2/0 Semperfli thread which seems to hold them in place well and shouldn't be displaced by the Trout's teeth. I will first try the Waioeka River next week and see how they go. Looking forward to Tasmania and catching up with a few Aussie fly-fishermen.Regards from NZ.

    Hey mate just visited this place. Only had time to use a black wooly. When you say Bag Fly, you mean a silicone style smelt using a bag to mold it first? I can see the fly in the video I will look around a bit more but I got plenty of orange hotspot buggers & an OPST smooth line to punch through the wind. I didnt get the step in the edge or the wall area but I assume im going to cast around foilage as you do here for best chances? Most area looks quite shallow entry in as opposed to the deeper wall section. I was weary about wading in also..

      My goto fly is a sex dungeon using the Kelly Galloup’s jerk strip technique for large browns- worked great in NZ, but I feel the shallow entry around most of this lake will not be worth the snags as it is quite a heavy fly. Anyway, hit me up if you see this comment!!

      Hi Greg, Thanks for the enquiry, at the moment i'm unable to go fishing due to cataracts of my eyes, its hard to see details when tying flies and fishing. The good news is there is surgery that can correct the condition which I will have done. A fair while ago I did a talk on fly-fishing the central Highlands for the calder fly-fishing club which I think is still available to watch, did you see it? If not I will try and find the link and put it on here. If you did see the talk maybe I could do something else for you and others that might be interested. Please get back to me. Regards Bruce.

    Bravo, Bruce. Thanks for doing the Pot Scrubber. As you noted, this is my favourite and most effective fly. If I was forced to fish with just one pattern, this is it. In most seasons it takes the majority of my fish. Not surprisingly, I tie several hundred a year for friends, as well as for myself. In relation to colour, I use the original dark brown colour when fishing a little deeper, or before a hatch, especially to represent the Macquarie Red mayfly Atalophlebia australis, or its companion the Macquarie Black Atalophlebia albiterminata. When a hatch is on, I shift to the lighter fiery brown colour as the colour of the nymph lightens as it nears the surface and about to shed its skin. In highland lakes, mayflies like Atalophlebia superba (Penstock Brown) and Tasmanophlebia lacustris (Highland Spinner) are closer to fiery brown in colour. As for hook size, I generally use size 10 for lakes, or turbid water (river or lake), and size 12 for rivers and also for early morning dawn patrol on a lake when the fish are close in. I keep a few size 14, but the flat copper wire is getting too broad. I aim to tie a body length, not including the tail fibres, that matches the length of the living nymph; 9-11 mm Macquarie Red, 10-13 mm Macquarie Black, 13-15 mm Penstock Brown, 16 mm Highland Spinner. However, I believe, exact colour and size is not as important as the resemblance or life. Wigram’s pattern doesn’t have a wing case. I do add one as my personal signature, but it has absolutely no bearing on the nymph’s success. Graham

    This is one of my favourite flies, which I tie by the bucket load. It’s exciting drifting one of these little sail boats down a river glide or across a weed bed in a lake, waiting for a big brown to slurp it down. Noel Jetson’s recipe of this fly is available in Max Stokes’ “Tasmanian Trout Fly Patterns”. Jetson’s pattern is a variant of Peck’s Dun by Charles Peck. Jetson used pair strips of speckled hen wing quill, not folded, whereas Peck used a single strip of oak turkey wing quill ~40x10mm and folded over. Speckled hen wing is getting harder to buy, so I use brown partridge hackles for the wings to get the same mottling effect. The secret of this fly is not to over-dress it. There’s not much to a mayfly. I normally make 4 or 5 turns of the red hackle and no more than two of the grizzle.

    • @Innaturesrealm
      @Innaturesrealm 3 роки тому

      Again Greummac, Awesome feedback and information on the Highland Dun. The tying of the Highland Dun and other great patterns can also be found in Geroge Rowly book The Pursuit of FlyTying. You are not wrong in regards to the shortage of speckled hen feathers I've had trouble finding them on many occasions, but they're perfect for the wing material of this magnificent fly. Thanks, Greummac

    The Macquarie Red, Highland Dun and Wigram’s Pot Scrubber are my stock patterns for the three stages of the highland and lowland Tasmanian mayflies. In “The Way of an Angler”, David Scholes gives the following original dressing form Max Christensen on page 108: Hook: No. 2* Long-Shank Mayfly up eye. (*equivalent today to a long shank 13 or size 12) Silk: Orange. Tail: Three long, stiff, red cock hackle fibres. Body: Tying silk. Rib: Fine copper wire. Hackle: Front hackle of light grey creel cock, intermediate hackle, slightly larger, of red cock and the back hackle* (palmer tied) from a small red cock bantam. (*body hackle) Head: Sufficient space is left between the eye of the hook and the front hackle to allow for the building up of a ‘head’, slightly larger in diameter than the eye of the hook. The head of most mayflies are quite large and distinct. Scholes commented further, and Max agreed, that a down-eye hook was preferred as it would result in a better fly that would sit better on the water and hook better. However, at the time, a down-eye long shank in strong fine wire was not available. Not mentioned by Scholes, but is mentioned in Max Stokes’ “Tasmanian Trout Fly Patterns” is that the orange silk should be well waxed. It was presumed that this dulled the orange silk to the right colour. The natural colour of Macquarie Red mayfly is closer to a fiery brown. I now use Uni-Thread Rusty Brown for the same effect.

    • @Innaturesrealm
      @Innaturesrealm 3 роки тому

      Hi Claude, The benefit of an up eyed hook on a dry fly is that it gives a better float and aids a leader that's had floatant applied to it either partially or fully to float better. Even if you like to apply no floatant to your leader it aids in your dry fly floating higher. Hope this helps Claude.

      Hi Mathew, Yes, Ian is an awesome fisherman and an innovative fly tier and a great artist. Living right next to Newyln's affords him unlimited opportunities.

    What sort of line do you like to use for nymphing in the Newlyn's Bruce?

      Hi Brad, When nymphing I use a floating line and change the weight of my flies to search the varying depths. If I want to get down really deep or down deep quickly I may use a slow or fast sinking line. However, at Newlyns there really isn't a need to use sinking lines because the lake isn't that deep, except around the dam wall. Changing your flies weight will in my opinion suffice around most of the lake. Hope this helps Brad.

    Great vid mate! I received my maxcatch 3 weight ultra glass a few weeks ago but I kind of forgot how to fly cast so when I went to the river to test it out I was just practicing my casts 😂. Considering its price, it’s a very well made rod I just wished that I was able to use it effectively but ahh well, that’ll come with a bit of practice ay.

      Hi gesman5000, I feel the 3 weight ultra glass would be perfect for small streams and creeks providing feather down presentations. Once you get the rust out of your casting your be in business and into the fish. Keep me informed with your progress and have a merry xmas.

    Excellent presentation and cleared alot up for me. Many years ago i fished Newlyn and just happened to have a good mayfly hatch in front of me and it was possibly the best 25 mins of fly fishing i have ever seen. Trout just came on a feeding frenzy. I couldn't hook one for the life of me basically because i had no idea until now. Thanks Bruce
