Bonsai by the Sea
Canada
Приєднався 25 жов 2021
I am a 5th generation Texan now living in Canada. Came here as a musician with my wife and fell in love with Nova Scotia. Was a farm to market farmer for many years, but discovered bonsai during the pandemic when the Farmers Markets were shut down in 2020. My love of bonsai came from learning about yamadori and I began collecting local trees. Inspired by Peter Chan, Nigel Saunders, David Easterbrook and others I started my own UA-cam channel. I then got interested in pots and learning how to make cement pots. I then ventured into clay where i am learning new techniques all the time. Thanks for joining me on my journey and enjoy the channel-- hope it inspires you to create your own bonsai adventure.

Great video James mate 👊👊
Thanks 👍
Handcrafted pot, trees grown from seed, and up cycled and repurposed decor never looked better! 🏆
Thanks 🙏 for your support
Absolutely gorgeous 🤩🎉
Very sweet my brother. You are such a good artist. You are so talented. Love you! Your Sister, Betty
Love you too Betty!
Thank you!
Now that is a forest and a half. Houses and trees go great together. Nice road that you made and the truck fit in just right. Great composition. Come spring you will have some nice growth. You are having a great bonsai day. Stay warm up in the North 40.
🫖☕️🥶
Hi. Looks great. Excellent pot. I wonder if sealing the exterior of the pot with concrete sealer would slow down evaporation. You convinced me to get back into it.
I enjoy the way the pots act not sealed but it might work for you thanks 🙏 for watching
The pot turned out fantastic and the Penjing is really really nice...I can't believe the rooting you are achieving on your cuttings in just a couple months, amazing...One question about keeping the pot wet for a couple additional weeks to let it cure...Could you keep it submersed during that period? Love the video, content and inspiration...Thanks James...Sequim, WA...
Yes underwater is great for these pots thanks 🙏 for your support
Have you tried it with fibreglass fibres in the mix
No it would be another expense the pea gravel dose the same thing thanks 🙏 for watching
Wicked!! That is going to be beautiful with trees and shacks in it!!
Planting it up soon thanks 🙏 for watching
They looks fantastic! That winter cold eh! Yucky! Do you keep your Sequoias indoors all winter? I found mine struggled, so I have them out in the trailer this winter. They've got down to -10C in there. It's heated. Stays usually around the zero Celsius mark...
Yes I’m keeping them in my shop they get cold but not freezing
Te mando muchos ánimos, y si te aburres NO HAGAS MAS CHORRADAS DE ESTAS, mejor vete a pescar o simplemente a pasear.
Thanks 🙏 for watching
Excellent tutorial, James. For the winter, you could hold a class on cement pot making. Students to bring their own supplies or pay you for the supplies and then pay you for your time in the class. Class can be called: Cement pottery with James. The class can start out with small pots, like an 8 or 6 inch pot. Something simple to start with and then go to your master class on bigger pots. That would be cool for you. After all, you are the Master Craftsman of the pottery.
James you reminded me of Ed Norton and Ralph Kramden of the Honeymooners. They were learning to play golf. Ralph told Ed to address the ball, so Ed did: "Helloooo Ball". I was picturing you saying Hellooooo Pot. Those were the days, James. Thanks for the memories.
Wonderful looking pot. Looking forward to seeing it planted.
Gona be great bonsai fun 🤩
That is one impressive pot! WoW well done
Thanks 🙏 for your support
Like it! BTW making is misspelled in the title.
I'll call the newspaper! 😁
I never won any spelling 🐝
@@bonsaibytheseaI’m not trolling you James😊 You are in the top 5 of my favorite UA-cam channels!
I see you're also into ceramics which I was too many moons ago.
Great video!
I can find the video where you made the tools for this
ua-cam.com/video/XKFZ_HePyRU/v-deo.html
Okay...You make that look so easy and I know its not...Really enjoy watching you create such awesome pots and I love that you have figured out how to build them without support wire or mesh...Really nice James...Thanks for sharing and looking forward to seeing this pot get its tree(s)...Sequim, WA...
Love making them thanks 🙏 for your support cheers
Thanks for the inspiration - You helped me decide to make my own pots! I started a pottery class today 👍🏻
Soon I’ll make a video on clay pots cheers
@@bonsaibythesea Looking forward to that!
What is the temperature in greenhouse? How long will it be before they have to go out in colder weather?
My greenhouse is unheated drops below freezing at night I’m keeping the sequoia trees in my shop I won’t put them outside till it stays above freezing
Hey guy, that polar vortex house reached all the way down here to north Florida. The last two weeks vast majority of the nights have been right at freezing or below just a few miles north of me I got snow. Glad most of my most recent collection is made up of conifers. Anyway I’m 10 shades of green watching you all those natural made bonsai out of the ground. Thanks for sharing.
Thx for sharing
Thanks for watching!
Nice walk through time showing how the seeds progressed.
Thanks for watching 🙏
Super cool, cuttings rooted nicely for you. The runt, a mini bonsai? I think it would look good in a small pot. Just a thought.
Thats a pretty good growth rate 💪🏻 the flash backs were cool! Thanks for sharing 🙏
Enjoying your channel keep up the good work 👍
@@bonsaibythesea Thank you Sir 🫡 and likewise 🙏
Wow, that opening pot was completely frozen...Great looking pot, man those trees are really growing fast...I remember watching you make that pot and the subsequent Sequoia videos's...All great stuff...Can't wait to see the next video, I just love watching you make these pots...Thanks for sharing James...Sequim, Wa...
Thanks 👍
La maceta muy bonita .......pero le sobra para ese árbol media maceta
Thanks 🙏 for watching
Great to see you making these great pots. Regards from the Netherlands.
Glad you like them! Is a great thing to do by the wood stove thanks 🙏 for watching
I'm so jealous! You're outside in just a sweater! Lucky bugger! I'm here with 6 layers on and still cold. That tree looks great in that pot! Great video.☺
Back to freezing now it didn’t last long
👍
I envy your collection location. My experience has been with a much denser soil and mainly Ashe junipers in late February. Survival rate was not great and we did not dare bareroot the yamadori. Transfer to a loose substrate was a gradual process. Surviving trees made it worth the effort.
Thanks 🙏 for watching good luck with your yamadori
keep making these James, we are making them at home and the tips are amazing.
poor trees😓
Now they are rich trees 🏝️
Thanks for sharing. Please stay warm.
Sorry mate, definitely doesn’t look right in that pot.
Has a long way to go just a phase thanks 🙏 for watching
Mine always rot. I use terriariums and try to keep humid enviroment but the always die. What thinks might differ from your enviorments then 75 degrees, humid terrium, fairly muddy.
Mine love the tree compost large pearlite lots of drainage
Cool pot, cool tree, cool moss. Overall, simply superb.
Thanks for the kind words! 🙏
9F/-13C in the Windy City at5pm. Hope you will be good.
It’s that time of year 🫖☕️
Very cool...🌴🌳
Thanks for visiting
Foist! Is that how we say it here? 😃Happy for you to have nice weather - your tree looks great in that pot 👍🏻
Thanks 🙏 for watching 🤙
بہت خوب جناب جیمز
Shukran oiwee!
Why take them out You should train them out there.
Thanks 🙏 for watching
Could you facet the outer sides with a tool, or is it too hardset when you take the taped paper off? How do you keep your hands from becoming "elephant skin"?
At 10 hours it’s just starting to set up it could be carved on haven’t tried that yet the possibility’s are endless dry skin in winter is always a problem happy pot making
Nice 👏
Great result - budget friendly too - You are a talented craftsman James! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thanks 🙏 for watching, I appreciate the support!
Helpful, thanks!
Lol the natural way. ✌️❤️🇳🇿
Cool, I've been trying to make some unique concrete pots for my bonsai. Alot of day dreaming happens before anything gets to paper. ✌️❤️🇳🇿
Thanks 🙏 for watching, hope this helped cheers
