Tarpon on Old Town Predator Kayak June 2, 2017. Stable
Переглядів 4257 років тому
Tarpon on our beach - Indian Shores... Few mistakes I'll make a point of now. Should always keep a Tarpon off your bow, not either side. In front makes easy flow. When the Tarpon gets beside the kayak, you increase drag. Drag reel-drag is bad. In a tippy kayak, you would have been swimming. This kayak never leaned once. 2nd, I did manage to steer him away from a crab trap, but turning his head ...
Predator PDL out of the box OMG

Received PDL yesterday and on the water today. Want to share this with anyone shopping for a great kayak for fishing. Google Evolution Outdoors in Winter Springs Fl for huge deals! They took $800 off this kayak due to a few scratches on this demo model. They replaced the Paddle system for free. 100% love this kayak. Hope this review helps.

*_This thing is a wonder!>_**_allmy.tips/SevylorKayaks?ㅜㄲ_**_ < I pack it on my bike, ride to a body of water, stick it in and start paddling. It's opened up a whole new world of places I couldn't get to before. Especially good for birding in wetlands. Setup and repacking are easy once you get the hang of it. You just have to learn how to use the pump._*
My kids just bought me one for Christmas it's a beast of a kayak. I'm 6 feet 6 inches tall and 140 kg and the old town don't give a crap. Super happy with the investment. Great review man! Cheers from New Zealand
thinkin thinkin Cheers! And congrats on the Old Town. I still have the same one! Salt and fresh water. Trips to Canada, US gulf, Atlantic and as many lakes I can between. Had to replace adjustable seat straps. Contacted Old Town and they sent me 2 for free. Great support 👍🏽👍🏽
How is it years later I'm 6ft 4 250 so I'm always worried about fitting in it
James Ireland No worries. 600lb capacity
Молодец! Но стоять надо по середине доски, тогда нос не будет болтаться в воздухе . а вот поворот делать стоя на корме))
I just took mine out for the first time. Is it normal for the pedal console to shift side to side as you pedal?
Chris Crosby All 3 locks are applied, the gray console barely moves. And the peddle area barely moves
Scott Dasch ah...I just locked the two closest to chair. Too excited I guess!
What were you using for bait
RoyalGamerAAA Threadfin
I gotta get one of those.
Can you ski behind it? :-D
hows the drive holding up? How does it paddle? I am in Clearwater, but bay side. The water in Safety Harbor is pretty skinny.
XeonTSD I’ve fished up there and yes, it has some serious skinny spots. The inlets are easy to manage during tide swings. The Drive is zero maintenance. Not sure if you can get in there to grease anything. I only lube the peddles with REEL oil. I go out 2 or more times a week across sand. Sometimes boat ramps, but mostly beach. Sand and salt water hasn’t killed it lol. Just hit it with hose when done
So with the drive up how does it paddle compared to other yaks? does the weight make it "piggy"?
XeonTSD If I fished flats only, I would seek a lighter yak. But I go out...way out. Hubberts Charter checked to see if I was ok. I asked how far I was from the beach. 8 miles. Getting around is not a problem. Wouldn’t bring a light kayak out that far. I also Fish off Palm Beach area. There you’re in 200ft of water 2 miles out. The ability to peddle backwards while fighting a Tarpon is priceless. Never been pulled over by Large Fish. And a lot of storage to pack Fish. 50” Kings slide under seat perfectly.
I went and looked at it today. Very nice... Do you troll with the built in rear rod holders? The seemed like they would flex a lot if you had a big fish hit.
XeonTSD I installed 3 Scotty rocket holders. And always keep drag light for Tarpon and kings. Those are my targets.
Very beautiful. I suppose you also practice barefooting, since you appear in your videos often barefoot. To you also like to walk barefoot or to drive barefoot?
Crosley Chicco We’re in Florida. Always barefoot. I will wear socks at times for sun protection. The peddles are made for either.
How beautiful this. I am Italian, but I also practice barefooting, and I often walk barefoot, even in winter, when it is not too cold. And I drive almost always barefoot.
So, what's the verdict. Do you like this better than the Mirage? I'm in the market for a new one and was going to buy the Mirage, but I just saw this and am now needing to decide between the 2.
I am frikkin green with envy!
I was totally thinking about using that for a piss hole lmao!
You should get a friend taking video from another boat so we can roughly see how fast it goes
Good idea! And my fish finder has GPS with speed on it. Helps a lot. Some baits can't swim fast enough and end up surfing behind you. I posted another video decked out before fishing. Check that one out. Has all my finished upgrades 👍🏽
I looking into buying my first kayak this year but still not sure about which one, I'm more looking into a Hobie 14 but would like to get someone else opinion now that I seen this kayak. What do you suggest, I would really appreciate it thanks.
A kayak is a kayak. So features are what make the differences. Hobie Angler is a great kayak. But this is their 1st year making one that can go in reverse. My friend bought one 4 months ago. He's already broken the cable that spins the fins that make the Angler go in reverse. When a big fish is swimming at you, reverse is important. Helps you take up slack in your line. I can not believe taking my hand off my of my tackle is a good idea. I just spin my feet backwards. Another great feature is the seat. It sits you high, but this kayak won't flip while you're in it. And if something ever happens, you won't pay $700 for another seat. I could go on and on. We kayak in a group and everyone has peddle drives. Also look at Wilderness line of yaks. Stability is key. Standing up and walking around in your kayak is key to comfort. We're out nearly 8 hours daily if weather permits.
Wow that's damnnn good..
I see you have Scotty rod holders; I have a couple of questions: 1. With those mounting plates do you just drill the holes and mount the unit? 2. The one on the right looks like it has a different plate that allows adjustments? What is it? How did you mount it? Looks great though. I just ordered my Predetor PDL, your video started my obsession! Lol
You can drill through those black planks. I went to Ace Hardware and got all stainless steel nuts, bolts and washers. Those planks are $10 each. So if you mess up, no worries. The slider mount is for my fish finder. And I use Scotty mounts for the Rocket Rod holders. The small rod holders put my trolling rods into the peddles. I'll post up another video with the upgrades. You're going to love this kayak! So stable. Even in waves I just stand up. Must be the deck you stand on is at water level. It just doesn't tip at all. You have 2 rod holders in the back. But with the Rocket rod holders, I can turn them toward the outside. 7' rods. About 16' between baits when trolling.
That contraption on the right side is a Scotty Triple tree. All those holders are history. I'll make another video. Hope Sunday we'll be on the water
Thanks! I look forward to seeing the upgrades. Thanks again.
Just made a quick set up video Hope it helps give you ideas for your new PDL
How well would you recommend this boat in big water like the ocean or choppy water more so than in this video?
I'm in the ocean nearly everyday. And I'm in 80ft. Winds get me and swells come in. Boats pass me all the time. I catch some ocean spray. That's kayak life. I ride the swells and this yak doesn't spin out and try to flip. It stays steady. Rudder extends behind the kayak. Not under it. I usually ride surf to the beach. Lift the peddles and hang-10 all the way in.
How is the peddle/prop system holding up in the salt vs the Hobie's Mirage Drive?
Dan Stephens about every 10 trips I put 2 drops of PENN fishing reel oil onto the bearings where the peddles go into the 'transmission ' I kinda dropped the peddles into the water 1 time. They float. My hobie fins would have sunk. Fresh rinse and oil drops. Never squeaked.
how much u paid for?
sergio ramirez 1900
+riprockvx9 thank you very much
OMG I have to have it, who, where, and how much?
Stephen Hickman I would check eBay and Craigslist 1st.....then G00gle. Mine came from the Orlando area in Florida and was shipped super fast...24 hours and was on my door step. EvolutionOutdoors were he sellers. I'm trying to figure out how to get it to Hawaii next year!!
riprockvx9 cool, thank you!
riprockvx9 let me know if you figure out
Is the pedal system sealed for salt water use?
Kevin M absolutely! Never been in fresh water except under the water hose afterwards
Wanna take a piss! Great video. Can't wait to get mine
Sprungered the Snook LOL.....perfect.
Good luck breaking your back topping this kayak on your car on a long days of kayak...just a heads up
Hgghgg Ggjhgg I throw mine into the back of my 4Runner. Haven't hoisted it yet. I put a truck bed extender into the hitch and trolley wheels in the back scupper holes
riprockvx9 awesome! i have a 4runner as well! hopefully one day i can toss my kayak in! great video!
Thanks for sharing, love how quite it seems.
They gave me a great deal too I have my own the way got the Predator PDL and a pedal for 2600 when are shipping it all the way to Wyoming from Florida it is supposed to be here on Wednesday they started the shipping on Monday I just can't believe how amazing and good customer service . I absolutely love that store
Crazy $2,700.
what kind of hobie do you have? I thought they were stable
that is good
what that thing call
Old Town Predator PDL
Awesome video! That school of sharks @ 0:42 was amazing!
Mine comes in next week!
AnglerX I go out for 6-10 hours at a time. That's a lot of beer!
AnglerX Will probably be the last kayak you'll want to ever sit in. So stable and fast. Super silent
you wanna take a piss in it haha lol
You mentioned a good discount. May I ask what you paid?
$1900 2017. Evolution Outdoors replaced the peddle system too. Then delivered it for $100 to my door 2 days later. We did FaceTime and looked at 3 different kayaks.
Guess the kayaks wee used in a Demo a couple weeks prior. So they were new, barely any water time
I ended up buying the other two you probably saw.
Right on 🤙🏽

do you think the predator is faster than the Hobie and do you think the predator can handle the Pacific I'm on the west coast..
I have a Hobie Mirage 12'. Each kick gets 1:1 with Mirage system. Each Mirage fin is about 5x the size of 1 side of the Predator prop. I'm not an Engineer and I have never peddled the 14' Angler. The Predator prop is 12.5:1. 12.5 rotations for each revolution of the peddles. When shopping for my kayak, I compared against Hobie. The Hobie Angler seat was nearly on the floor. The Predator seat is high. Almost 3x higher than the Hobie. I was skeptical to Predator stability. But it's been a stable tank in the worst of conditions. My Hobie sometimes surfs down waves then spins sideways. I've been dumped on the Hobie. I don't think I can flip the old Town Predator. When water warms up I'll try. But for now, never have I felt in an danger. I fish the Skyway shipping channel and never have any worries. Sorry for long reply. But I truly feel I made the best decision when I purchased this kayak. And my Hobie is on Craigslist.
how will this kayak handle ocean fishing ,in some choppy seas.
My 12' Hobie is tippy. Not good in choppy seas. This kayak is stable. I can stand up, turn around, fish off the side while standing and it barely tilts. Was in 2-3' chop 3 days ago. Tracks great. Caught some over-spray from the bow but was paddling straight into the wind. Check FishBrain app. ScottyOldTown 👍🏽
Is it too heavy to car-top?
I have permanent roof racks that support it fine. I did buy some foam for the racks. They're rated at 75 pounds. The kayak is about 90 without peddle system installed. So roofing the kayak is fine. I put a beach towel over the 4Runner spoiler, place the kayak bow onto towel, pick up the back and slide it on. Tie down 👍🏽
Is it too heavy to car-top?
Are you able to troll straight off the side while pedaling with your Scotty rod holder in that spot? Seems like your feet would smack the rod butt while pedaling.
You're right. I need to get the Scotty rod extension holders. I just don't have faith in those.
riprockvx9 just get the Scotty rocket launcher?
Just ordered 2 Thanks for the suggestion.
riprockvx9 no problem
Can you recommend a good kingfish trolling rod? 15-25? 30-50?
My King and Tarpon rigs are: Shakespeare Ugly Stik Custom 7' USCS 1170H 01J15CM Action: Heavy 20-50lb line I purchased them from DogFish Tackle in Seminole Fla. About $70 Reel: PENN Fierce FRC8000 300 yards #50 braid Use a Stinger Rig for Kings. 18" long then 6" between bait hook and treble hook. For tarpon, I put 12' of #50 Floral with a circle hook that the opening is the size of a quarter. For either fish, I keep drag loose enough for the fish to get bait and run without pulling my kayak over. And I find Tarpon like to bite bait and turn before eating the whole bait. Tight drag and bait will escape when they go to gulp it down.
You mention seminole, I'm in Pinellas county too. Picking up a new yak tonight. Not a PDL drive but will be working on a trolling motor set up. I saw some PDL drive systems at Bill Jackson's too pricey for my taste. I ended up buying a Vibe Seaghost 13. has a built in rudder system and a decent chair. Where you fish at?
I live in Seminole by the Park Blvd draw bridge. I normally fish across the bridge in the Gulf. There's free parking there, well across the street. The Tarpon are in! Heading out tomorrow around 6am
Awesome, I've never went out for tarpon, not sure I have a pole/setup that would work for that. I fish mostly intracoastal waterways and it's been a while since I've been on a yak. I follow that fishing reminder website, emails me when the tide and moon phases line up and tomorrow 8 to 10am is supposed to be pretty good. I'm hoping to get out on the water if the yak comes in, been waiting for it for 3 weeks.
No worries. I failed to mention the seat. Most kayaks have molded seats with padding. Hobies have a chair 3" from the deck. I sit in this kayak like in a chair at work. Super stable. After working all night, I reclined the chair and almost fell asleep. Kayak tracked like on cruise control. Recumbent biking across the Gulf. Love this vessel 🎉👍🏽
Great review! I do love mine, but I'm biased. It's great to hear it from another perspective. I'm sharing your video dude. Hang on for questions. Thanks.
Sandy the Tarpon slayer! You go girl...
She brought it to the beach. I couldn't hold the camera while standing in the surf. And GoPro died by the time she got it in. I posted another video after this one of the fish about 10 feet out. Monster Tarpon. There were no 30-pounders. All look to be over 70#. Can't wait for the water to clear up over there. We're going back ASAP!!
Cool video.. Did you guys ever get your hand on the fish?
Awesome!!! Here in Brazil the only fish that I can hook from the beach is catfish lol. Take care and godbless.
Damn girl! I see you're still rocking it! Can't wait for a visit to your lake paradise!---E
That's one angry shark brah! Looks a lot cooler on the big screen vice on my phone.
Dumping the board is an interesting idea!
Good! rs But I dont went well =(
