The studies done on cadavers claim persistent thyroglossal ducts can be completely asymptomatic and found in 7% of the human adult population. The tract can lie dormant for years or even decades. Then, this will be a clear explanation how the upper respiratory infections can travel to the thyroid gland, causing inflammation and prompting the swift action of the immune system against thyroid, leading to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. The glands in the mucosa of the duct will continue their secretions until the fluid forms a cyst or exit the duct via the opening in the foramen cecum. If such fluid becomes trapped in the duct it can lead to the formation of thyroglossal duct cysts or cause enlargement of thyroid capsule by filling the space between the follicles, especially if the lymphatic system drainage is impaired.
