The Weekly Edit Is Taking A (Short) Break.

I was hoping to keep up with The Weekly Edit during the festive season, but it was not to be. With Winter in full swing here in the Swiss Alps there is much adventure to be had, work is crazy, and we're currently making some big life changes - so I decided to hit pause until things settle down. Looking forward to pick it up soon again! Learning as I go along and sharing the stoke. Let’s go! CON...

Since Winter is on our doorstep here in Switzerland, I thought for this week’s edit I’d process one of my images from last Winter out on ski tour in the mountains around our valley. It was made on day three of a multi day ski tour. After experiencing white out conditions the day before, we were fortunate to have blue skies and fresh powder on the final day of our tour. Thanks Cornelius, another useful walkthrough. I'm trying to decide between C1 and PL for the long term. I've had trials of both. I think C1 renders slightly more naturally than PL8, and seems to have a more complete feature set including HDR merge of bracketed images. Do you have an overall preference for either, please?

    • @themullerfiles
      @themullerfiles 11 днів тому

      Glad it was helpful! And good question. It’s a tough one to be honest. I agree with you on C1 renders being slightly more natural, but you can dial that in in PL too. As to the HDR merge, I can’t remember the last time I made use of the feature in C1 / LrC / On1 etc. to be honest. Cameras these days have superb dynamic ranges, so I rarely have the need. Panoramic images on the other hand I do make, and with PL I made some videos about my workflow if you want to check them out. One downside for me about C1 is the catalog feature where you have to import images before editing. Its catalog takes up lots of space, unlike LrC (I’ve done some personal tests). With PL there is no import, you just navigate to the folder and start editing. Very fast and hassle free. Also great when switching between work stations (no worrying about the catalog). In a nutshell, if you’re looking for a program that (almost) does it all, go with C1. PL is a love hate thing for me. I love how it renders RAW images, the sharpening and noise reduction is amazing, but the interface is not as straight forward so can take time to learn. Not sure I’ve been helpful, but I hope it was at least a bit!

      @@themullerfiles Yes, that does help clarify things. I currently own PL8 so I'll stick with that for a while and see how I get on. Hi Cornelius, if you take a control point, set the radius to your liking, then turn the luma and chroma all the way down to zero, aint that close enough for you ? In becomes insensitive to tones and colours and simply provide a gradual fade circle. No way to make an oval however, but you can always overlap a few control points to get something similar. Give it a try.

    Thanks Cornelius, I appreciated your insights. I am considering subscribing to either DXO Photolab 8 or C1. Do you have a view on which product is better for an amateur landscape and travel photographer please? Both products are complex, and have different attributes such as the lack of HDR merge in Photolab, but the inclusion of Clearview and Smart Lighting in Photolab. I currently use Photmator, but would like to have better Raw file rendering than you get in Apple Photos, on which Photomator is dependent. I am keen to avoid a subscription based product...

    The only thing I like with PL is the chroma/luma adjustments for masking. It's something LRc should've had years ago. They've solved it in a more complex way, but it should be as simple as this. The fight for denoising will go on. One brand has insane capabilities for 6 months, then the competitor has it, then another and another. And in between, when they try to get better, improve and win, they do stuff that makes your hair fall out, they go backwards in development and then they improve. it's a complete battle =P As one who can't deal with switching between various software for features and need just 1 to do them all, I am also a LRc user. Although when I really need denoise/enhancements, I hunt, and get things done with whatever tool available, and then revert to LRc to finish. I'm cheering for Dxo though. I've got big hopes for PL down the road. It's my dream to get to use it sooner than later. If they only would get up to speed.

    • @themullerfiles
      @themullerfiles 2 місяці тому

      I hear you! I'm also (believe it or not) mostly someone who likes to get things done in one program. But I'm always curious, hence I started my Weekly Edit series, learning and sharing as I go along. LRc is for sure the go to mostly, but I have to admit, PL is really growing on me. And if they would only add a couple more things it would be near perfect. On another note, if they would include all the peripheral programs in PL (Nik, Viewpoint, Filmpack), they would win over many more fans, in my opinion. They could even raise the price of PL from $249 to $299 in that case. But currently, if you invest in all of those at the same time you're looking at $825-ish - ouch!

    I upgraded the Nik collection, but I am still on Photolab 6 because the minimal feature upgrade to seven just wasn't worth the cost and it looks like I will be skipping this upgrade as well. This program is missing what I consider "basic" editing features compared to just about every other available program. Disappointing to say the least.

    • @themullerfiles
      @themullerfiles 3 місяці тому

      I hear you. On the one hand DxO have a remarkable product, but for some reason those "basic" features you mention are still missing. Things like a radial filter where you can manipulate the shape, panorama stitching and (to a lesser extent) HDR merging. Layers would be nice too. In my humble opinion if they implement these (radial filter, pano stitching and layers - HDR can be left out if needed), they would scoop up a fair bit of market share. I'm not so concerned about AI features myself. Their RAW conversion is second to none, and one of the main reasons I love using the program. Just be aware of you skip PL8, you will have to pay the full price for PL9, as DxO as DxO only allow upgrading from a maximum of two versions ago - as far as I'm aware.

    I have been using Photomator. The editing is great. However photo management is non existent essentially. To me its biggest flow however is the reliance on Apple RAW engine for demosaicing and lens correction. I shoot with a Canon R5. The RAW file is supported but no Canon RF lens is. So I get no lens correction on RAW which is a big issue, especlally on ultra-wide lenses. So for JPEG that is fine but for RAW that is a no go. I have been waiting for them to update but I never see it coming. I am now looking into DXO Photolab and will probably buy it although I have bought Photomator. I will never get any Adobe app.

    • @themullerfiles
      @themullerfiles 3 місяці тому

      Thanks for the comment! I agree with regard to the photo management (on the roadmap to some extent), but that's why I keep my images well organised on the hard drive - it's the best way to be DAM independent (especially if you're switching between programs). As to the lens corrections - I hear you! My suggestion would be to look at PureRaw 4 ($150) instead of PhotoLab ($250) if you want to keep using Photomator. With PR4 you can bulk process images and save as DNG's, but not with PL. However, if you don't mind spending the extra money, PL is a remarkable piece of software (with some quirks). Hope that helps!

    I would say someone on PhotoLab6 should update to this version, as they get the upgrade price. If someone is on PhototLab7 they can skip this version and still get the upgrade price for PhotoLab9 when that comes out sometime in the future. Someone on Photolab5 or earlier would be buying the software as a new user, if they want the best price then wait till the Black Friday for the annual sale price that DxO does once a year. And remember that anyone buying this software does not need to upgrade if they are happy with the software as they own the software and it does not stop working when you stop paying for your monthly licence.

    Why would you want an Auto White Balance as this is something that you really should be setting yourself, as it has a dramatic effect on the image and you should be choosing this aspect yourself! I am curious if you own the software or are you using DxO's 4 week trial of the software to do this video?

      Hey, I own all software I use in this series (which is why I had to put off buying my Ferrari 🤷🏼‍♂️).

    So are you going to do a round up at the end of this series (apologies of I missed a description about that at the beginning)?

      Good question! Can I get back to you on that 🤣? To be honest, I’m always testing out editing in these different programs, quite enjoy it, so one of the aims of this series is to keep learning and sharing the process as I go. Maybe it’ll never end 🤔…

      @@themullerfiles well you might run out of editors 🤔

      @themullerfiles 4 місяці тому

      @emilvonmaltitz yes, but not images, I’m not stopping after editing only one image in each editor, the idea is to keep learning each editor more in depth as the series progresses 👍🏽

    I really like this concept although I would personally prefer if you kept it consistent to lightroom if this is intended as an educational style series

      Glad you like the concept! There will certainly be more Lightroom edits, make no mistake. However, I'm also just following my own curiosity about other image editors and sharing the journey (us photographers like trying new gear and software, or at least I do!). But feedback is always appreciated, so thanks for taking the time.
