Why Silent Hill 2?

In The Idle Shed: Chapter 1 I've been telling people, for years, that Silent Hill 2 is my favorite video game. Why do I love it so much and what could that say about me?

The solution to the book is that there is no solution. Danielewski is brilliant in that he traps a portion of his readers in his maze, just like the books maze traps people. It's a brilliant work of meta fiction. He puts in little ciphers that lead to nowhere just to trap people into obsessive analysis. The only analysis is that the book is recursive. The reader obsesses over it the same way Johnny obsesses over Zampanos scribblings. The only solution is to be satiated in knowing you "got it" when you realize it's a trap about a trap.

not gonna watch until i finish the book myself, but im subscribing anyway bc good taste [also i gotta know how steven universe even could be twin peaks] and so i dont forget. that said, im struggling w the two different povs. what order do you recommend reading each chapter: all of the 'original' stuff [navidsons] and then the footnotes*? read the footnotes as they come up, then go back and read the rest until the next footnote? or be rly sassy and read the footnotes first? *the bits in courier new font. it's been a while since i last picked up the book, so i don't remember the guy's name but hopefully this makes sense

Honestly, I would just read it one page at a time. Occasionally, the footnotes will continue onto the next page so use your own discretion. Follow your interest. If you have to know what the next sentence is, keep reading. Any order works though. Treat it as a discovered text and follow the breadcrumbs.

I couldn't get through it. Once I got the academic joke, I couldn't carry on, I got so angry and just put it down. I did finish his second book which was also a clever idea poorly executed.

That's cool too! I just wanted to share my thoughts on something that spoke to me. Our differences in opinion are what makes art so rad, right?

Had to take a while to sit back and enjoy the video, as I usually just put video essays in the background while working, but you've done a fenomenal job of transmitting the story. House of Leaves is one of my favorite stories of all time, inspiring the way I interpret media, and you've truly done it justice. The cinematography and storytelling you've been using to tie all your essays together, such as the warm tones consistent throughout the video until the black and white at the end, or the way you tie back the review to the storyline of being stuck in a shed and left with stories as entertainment, or even just the way you juxtapose the actual story of house of leaves with your own storyline, has been one of the most unique and interesting things I've seen from this genre. Great work so far, and I hope you know that it doesn't go unappreciated.

Thank you so much for the kind words! Your comment made my day. All of the music, both background and forefront, are orginal tracks I wrote just for this series. I will be releasing a soundtrack along with the final video before the end of the year. Thanks for investing your time and interest.

Had a penpal going through chemo when I was first playing SH2 in a cold, dark bungalow with thin branches scraping the corrugated iron roofing. Needless to say it left a mark. Several years later I introduced a friend to it, and got to experience it again vicariously through them. It's that same strange feeling, happy memories about something that brings up sad memories. I guess the nostalgia and fondness for the shared experience insulates against the negative associations it would otherwise dredge up. But yeah, we get older, and feel connected to the formative experiences of maturity. Like the Nietzsche quote... not the abyss one alluded to in the game, but rather "Man's maturity is rediscovering the seriousness he had as a child at play"

I disagree with you on three things. 1. The shows are not supposed to reflect you. You are not those characters. Case in point, I'm straight and one of my favorite characters is a gay guy from Priscilla queen of the desert. He doesn't reflect me, but his self destructive behavior is fascinating and likely caused by the abuse he endured. 2. The diplomacy only policy doesn't work. Steven universe should have taken the hint that some opponents are not interested in diplomacy and sometimes an ass whoopin is a viable option. See ww2 for details. 3. Twin peaks went some. There was a storyline that progressed, slowly, but it progressed. Steven universe kept spinning it's own wheels making you do the work the writers didn't do.

I feel _EXACTLY_ the same way about Steven Universe. I've always felt intensely motivated by its sincerity and completely unfazed by its criticisms. I truly love it. Everything you said, I felt on a wavelength with. Twin Peaks, the show, admittedly confounded me on a first viewing. But watching the movie was like a religious experience! Talk about brutal honesty!! With maturity I've come to appreciate the show much more. Recently I watched it with my wife who'd never seen it, and even before we got to the movie, it was impacting her on a deeply emotional level; right away, she was able to pick up on subtext that I had missed when I was younger. I have a recommendation. If you like this level of sincerity -- and I can tell from your style that it's really important to you, which I love -- then you should watch Neon Genesis Evangelion. Maybe you already have idk! But it's the most intensely honest art I've ever seen. If I had to rate shows by how personal they are to me, Steven Universe and NGE would both be 10/10s.

I was introduced to SH by accident , via Limewire back in the day.. Its the music 🎶🎵 , i fell in love with the OST's . I was already a NIN halo fanatic, doing heavy drugs back then.. So the melodic industrial tunes were a vibe.. Couldn't tell ya which game they came from😂 back then. I just was memorized by Akira , i started searching for SH Tracks more and more , until i had an entire playlist of random OST songs and the rest is history.. So my SH introduction experience was backwards yet unique personally to me..

"PS2 on the floor at our feet " ahhh yes the good ole days.. I pity the kids who will never know the golden yrs of the PlayStation 2.. Literally Undefeated... SH 2 is an anomaly, a lone wolf in the series.. It shattered boundaries unknown to be achieved in a video game. Team Silent 😶 wasnt making a "video game" per se 😂 with SH2.. The themes in this interactive media experience touched on the flaws of the " human condition" , let that marinate in your mind for a second.... , and they didnt pull any punches with its narrative in tone and message. So many people have ended thier lives by self inflicting wounds , before and after this game came out. Its a tale of sin and purgatory , a PS2 title ? Up until then was unheard of. Real world actions that humans commit and think of .. Murder , Lust , Sexual Abuse , incest , Selfishness, and even forgiveness and redemption.. This title will forever hit a little too hard at home. Because its based around real human sin , depression, and mental health issues.. Blooper needs to focus, on the real world themes of this game , push that narrative to its limits. Just as Tean Silent did so long ago..They shouldnt treat it like a " video game" Because Team Silent didnt do so..

A little advice. There's moments when your talking and you can hear the audio clips fade out into pure silence. If you get like a 30 second to a minute long clip of air/wind/ambience, it will fill out those moments and make it more uniform with the rest of the video. That being said, you got the cinematography, music, and writing down. Great video all around. Hyped for what you make next!

This was a wonderful near half hour to spend with a fellow Fan. Silent Hill 2 is absolutely my favorite game of all-time, too, and I think you've nailed a vast chunk of why I love it so much. It has a real breathing pulse under all those polygons, and is the only game I've played that truly feels like it has a soul, even if that soul is in purgatory. Subscribed! 💖

The story is amazing, the characters are great, the music is great, all the symbolism, it doesn't rely on cheap jump scares. People calling SH2 as survival horror are wrong, in SH2 the survival aspect is a very minor part of the game. The game is all about the story, relationships between the characters, symbolism etc... Psychological horror is a better stamp for SH2.
