Did you know that Jesus celebrated Hanukkah while He was here on earth? Also known as the Feast of Dedication or the Festival of Lights, it was during this time He chose to proclaim to Israel that He is the light of the world (see John 8-10).
Christians should celebrate Hanukkah because our Messiah did. There are timeless truths highlighted in this story that Jesus wants us to see: the power of God to cleanse a defiled temple, the significance of dedication, and the call on our lives to be lights in the world.
WE ARE THE TEMPLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
1 Corinthians 6:19 says, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?”
Just as the Maccabees miraculously defeated Antiochus IV and rededicated the second Temple, Hanukkah is a time for us to rededicate ourselves to Jesus. We remember the power of Jesus’ blood covering over our hearts that make us temples cleansed for the indwelling of His Spirit.
DISCERN THE SPIRITUAL ATMOSPHERE
The spirit at war in our culture today is not unlike that which challenged Israel in the story of Hanukkah. Haggai 1:4 warns us, “Is it a time for you yourselves to be living in your paneled houses, while this house remains a ruin?” God is calling up Kingdom-warriors like the Maccabees who will fight for and honor the purposes of God; to be lights in a darkening world.
