Scion IQ Small Car Camper
Im a BIG dude 6'3" and lets just say heavy... and attempting to sleep in my tiny car for two weeks, as I travel up Hwy 1 from San Luis Obispo to Portland. My passion is photography, but when I travel it gets expensive paying for hotels, so why not convert the daily driver into a micro camp car and save some serious coin! Journey will start July 24 and end Aug 6

Can you please link the products for the roof rack please
Any update on this video??
No, I filmed a bunch but never up loaded...it was an epic trip though...crazy hot in Arizona and Nevada where I was cuddling with my Yeti soft shell to stay cool, and when in San Francisco I was freezing my but off, sleeping with just a bed sheet....drank some amazing beer in Oregon and had a blast in Seattle....sleeping in that car was awesome, though definitely a solo rig, it taught me a lot though and I have up graded since then...on my 5 overlanding rig...
This is a great set up!
Do you still own your IQ? Just bought a used one and I'm wondering how reliable they are after a few years ownership.
I don't but I owned mine for 4 years. Reliability was great....it's a Toyota. What sucked was the horrible oil consumption, a quart of oil every 1000 miles
@@brandonhardman6787 Would the oil light come on? Or did you just check it all the time
@@heretodaygone2morrowrving231 oil light would come on
@brandon hardman Thanks for sharing now I know to keep an eye on it. Comforting to know the light would come on. Appreciate it
I bought one new in 2012, never had any problems although there is an engine recall for piston slap, I didn't bother since mine doesn't make any noise, doesn't burn oil. If you get one do a drain and refill of the CVT using factory fluid, mine was gross after 10 years and 40K miles. When the tranny heats up it starts whining. If I were to take it on long trips I would probably install a trans cooler.
9' wheelbase?!??🤔Don't think so, it's 6'7"🤐 Total length of the ca is less than 10'.
Yeah I did say 9ft...funny!
I will be driving from Wisconsin to California in my Scion in exactly one month.. I put some smaller 14" tires on to make the ride a bit smoother
Interesting, I enjoyed the trip, although I never wrote or documented about it...the scion has no insulation...nights and morning will be cold....many times I cranked the heater in San Francisco.....good luck....I've since upgraded from the IQ....
Can I ask what the normal load weight is for the roof? I just bought an IQ and want to throw a roof rack on it too.
I want to say 100#
@@brandonhardman6787 BRO! WHAT HAPPENED! you havent posted in a while, did it go well?
Cool set up! What model number is your roof rack? Been looking everywhere for one

Info on the roof rack looking for one?
Make an update video please
I searched exactly for this, not expecting anyone to have actually gone through with it. By the way, great video! :-)
and i thought my scion im was small
I think this guy died
Hahaha no didn’t die, it was a fun trip. Being my 1st UA-cam video...it was hard to enjoy my vacation and get great video for the update. I really didn’t get the shots I wanted of actually sleeping in the car..but I learned a lot. If it’s hot/cold outside it’s going to be the same in the iq...example at Lake Havasu it was 108 at 2 in the morning...and like 110 in the car...in San Francisco it was 40 at night and had to run the heater a few times during the night. By the end of the trip I was dialing in what I needed to do to sleep comfortably. I will at some time post my 2nd video of the trip
Is it maybe possible for 2 People?!
Marian Brandes no way! This is a solo rig...
Hi. Bought my husband a Scion IQ, we noticed you have the Thule rack we have been going crazy to find. Please assist us by telling us where on earth did you purchase it? My spinal surgery left me requiring a chair to ambulate ergo, need to put a rack on. Looked from coast to coast. Please help.🙄 Thank you. 😃 BTW, GREAT CAR!!! 👍
Tanni De Felice I bought it when it was in production...I’m trying to make rubber feet for the Thule kit and the fit kit too...sorry I’m sure Thule didn’t sell many of them...this the “hard to find” aspect
@@brandonhardman6787 Thank you ever so much, for responding, very kind!!!.☺😆😀 I received the Yakima fit kit today, with the round bars. the bars are 66" long, they look huge. CUT THEM DOWN?!?!?! My husband and I wanted the flat oval bars. We'll see. Thinking of attaching a Thule baslet or whateber we can get to fit.. Thank you once again. You are a good man. We think you shoud make more videos. 😠👍👍👍
Hi Brandon. Sweden here. I have the same car but branded a Toyota. I have been planing to do what you did. I took my Alfa Romeo 156 to 27 different countries 15 000 km (almost 10000 miles) in 45 days 2014 and I would love to do it again in my iQ. The airbags would be a problem but I read that you addressed it in one of your comments. Did I understand things correctly, you took out both front passenger and both backseats. Was backseats connected with airbag problems? Or just the front seat? I guess your trip is over now, how was it? I plan to stay in hostels hotels and the car.
I took out the front passenger and rear seat onl, left the driver's seat. It went well...got to distracted by nature and such to make a sec video. I will warn you when you remove the passenger seat, there is an airbag electrical tape that you "break" and when you reinstall the seat, the warning light will remain on. After a while I forget it's flashing.
Thanks Brandon for the update...
I talked to a mechanic and he told me you if you take out the seat with an airbag you need to put a plug with a resistor in its place, otherwise you get a light on the dash and no airbags in the car will functions. It sounded like they are in a serial connection.
I hooked up a small bike rack to the rear of mine, and a small storage compartment modified to the bike rack..... I hooked up the bike rack to a package.
So??? How did it go??
Went good, a big learning experience. My biggest advise, is figure out how you'll stay warm and or cool at night...on that trip I experienced a 107 degree night and a 30 degree night. Saved a ton of money sleeping in the car. I was so captive of the beautiful locations I forgot to take or document the trip well enough to make a second video. I will piece something together soon
So, how did the 2 week trip with the iQ go? I'm thinking of doing something similar with my '14 iQ this summer.
How did you get on? I’m in the process of also doing it
This is too awesome. I love it. Thumbs up! 👍
I own the same car, and im going to do the same to it for my long commute to LA. How did u remove the seats can you post a video regarding that??
T Santana sorry I didn’t take any picture or video of that. But there are 4 bolts for the back seat, and 4 for the front. The front also has the airbag and seat belt wire connections too, which will need to be in plugged. It will take some time removing the front...I spent like 4 hrs doing it. Google “scion is seat removal” there is some information on forums, that help. But I should warn you you’ll have the air bag light and seatbelt light flash on your dash. But after a few days I didn’t even notice it anymore....
@@brandonhardman6787 thanks brandon got it done today. Going to start my build tomorrow ill keep u posted on the progress
