    We get our maps laminated with a double sided matt lamination at a plan printing firm. We have to ask for double sided, as their normal practice is to do one side gloss, the other matt. They don't reflect the fluorescent lights above the table at all, and they look Amazing. We store them flat in a giant envelope I made for them.

Play one of the other million + TTRPGS that exist; Crimson Dragon Slayer, LotFP, Blades in the Dark, Into the Odd, Troika, Mörk Borg, Pirate Borg, Apocalypse Rat, Gamma World, Deadlands, Vampire, or 1e and 2e ORIGINAL TSR D&D, to name just a few... just don't spend your money with Hasbro/WOTC; send them a powerful message by COMPLETELY IGNORING THEM.

    My only experience with PBtA was a fantastic sci-fi game Uncharted Worlds. Ivan GMed it for us and that can be seen on his channel. I loved it but we only played one or two sessions. I don't recall Uncharted Worlds referencing "Moves" but if it did, I didn't realize it and was probably not "playing" it correctly. But it was one of the inspirations in my player history that moved me toward what evolved into the 2061 role-play first concepts. Great video.

    • @JasonFlashFootball
      @JasonFlashFootball Місяць тому

      I've never seen Real Housewives, but I can guess what you mean. Inter-personal drama for the sake of drama, like a Soap Opera. The constant drama between the "characters". I prefer to go out as a group of characters and engage in the world of threats and dangers. My "character" role-play will pop up when it pops up, as dialog, questions, responses, communication with NPC and party-mates, and maybe sharing some character internal thoughts.

    So we play to find out story if it’s a trap or a combat - but bit if it’s a Charisma roll.

    • @JasonFlashFootball
      @JasonFlashFootball Місяць тому

      I prefer to always roll, but some game systems do not demand we adhere to the "play to find out" gaming style. I like to "play to find out" but many GMs like to decide for or against the player based on ratings, skills or attributes, circumstances, etc. It takes the game out of the game. I'm at a place where I prefer to role-play and experience the game, including the Save or Die mechanic, the Reaction check, the Morale Check, etc, etc, etc, etc. If I did not want those mechanisms, I would pick a different game, like DAoM. And, of course, I play lots of different games and I accept what they ask us to do as a group but I have preferences.

    There is a distinct difference between what occurs in DAoM and the old-school d20. It is clear and distinct for me as a "role-player". The two sets of rules create different styles of role-play. D20 is about the "game" and the "group of characters". DAoM is about the individual characters and the world, the "game" is almost completely invisible.

  • @roleplaycafe6645
    @roleplaycafe6645 Місяць тому

    Good video J. To andwer about my take on najeon in the last game. I have to mentally create a picture from my character position to decide how it would prompt his real world decision. Is he going to duck iut and slip around to get a backstab? Hide away till the dust settles. Loo oad his thong and try to a strike with a stone? I gather situational information. So sharing information is important. As a side note. To me in DAoM that information is fluid. So much so thet the situational awareness is their. It just becomes a focus of timing as thibgs are occuring.

    • @JasonFlashFootball
      @JasonFlashFootball Місяць тому

      Agreed. That's because DAoM is not about the "game". There is little "game" in DAoM. DAoM rules are completely universal and simple; therefore, what you say is valid, not what the "rules" allow. In particular in regards to a procedural of how the game part happens, IE, combat mode in D&D.

    • @JasonFlashFootball
      @JasonFlashFootball Місяць тому

      In D&D you must procedurally achieve a chance at a "backstab". In DAoM, you describe how you are going for the "backstab". I say roll the dice. In D&D, much must happen for you to "get" a "backstab". The two games prove the difference in "role-playing" no question.

    It's kind of weird to me comparing this game to DCC as another OSR game. I just never thought of DCC as OSR. It's a fantasy d20 game for sure but there are tons of games using mechanics from the OGL that aren't OSR. I don't go for OSR games that are purely clones of earlier versions or games that push the limits to where the gameplay experience becomes significantly different. To me, Swords & Wizardry and Labyrinth Lord aren't games themselves. They're experiments on whether you can print D&D with a new name on the cover. On the other hand, DCC is completely in the opposite direction. It's an experiment on whether you can change every rule but then still call it D&D (Yes I know DCC isn't called D&D but you get my point). I don't think of either one of these extremes as the OSR. I absolutely think Dragonslayer is an OSR game. Don't misunderstand me. Just making a comment that I think the OSR has a boundary that Dragonslayer sits inside and DCC sits outside. Doesn't mean either one of them is good or bad as a game, just don't think the two belong in the same category within the overall hobby of fantasy roleplaying.

    @patrickbarnes9874 Місяць тому

    Why would your character not accept healing from a cleric?

  • @patrickbarnes9874
    @patrickbarnes9874 2 місяці тому

    Barbarians of Lemuria is not OSR. It is initial swords & sorcery fantasy version of the RPG system Everywhen that now has half a dozen or more setting-specific implementations of the BOL system. Because its system so closely resembles Traveler it's pretty much accepted as an OSR game in OSR communities I've seen, but it's technically an original modern RPG. It's my favorite fantasy RPG because it's just the absolute perfect balance of being fast and easy to play with amazing character customization and a low-magic but not grimdark setting. That last point is more important than you'd think, but most people seem to link low magic with grimdark and it's hard to find a low magic game that's still designed around fun adventure and not depressing and dark.

    what i keep asking myself is : could we somehow homebrew something that keeps some of the cool combat options of 4e but keep things grounded for gritty dungeon crawls, i.e. worrying about rope to descend into a pit, arrow traps etc. certain things like Eldarin teleport At Will abilities break this but i think we could still do cool options with combat to allow for an interesting middle ground between 'super hero' fantasy PCs and adventurers in the general sense

    We played OD&D exactly that way. But OD&D is not a role-playing game and a lot of the mechanisms it has don’t work well for role-playing. For example death at zero hit points but no effects before or after that, spell slots, and the undead turning rules - and especially Save or Die. Those are all elements of skirmish games. But you’re the one who champions playing in character - until your character dies and then it’s just a game and the character can be replaced like a dropped Meeple. I want you to remember to make a distinction between games where character death matters and games where it doesn’t mean shit.

    • @JasonFlashFootball
      @JasonFlashFootball 2 місяці тому

      I don't know any roleplaying game where character death means anything. What game are you referring to? Or what game device are you referring to where a character's death means something? I play in-character and it doesn't matter to me how they are created or how or when they die. The character goes away. I start over. It is pretty simple to me.

    - Excellent video. I don't understand people who would disagree with anything you said on the subject of playing- role playing GAMES . I follow the same principles and of course in the past would Hack/hotrod/ a game a bit. I suppose a video by you in the future discussing whether or not hacking/modifying a game to a point of becoming the SHIP of THESEUS philosophical argument could be had. I did this a few years ago with 5e and found I was fighting a rule set uphill trying for a play style 5e couldn't support. - I hacked it ( as Mike Mearls intended it could be ) but to little success and ... as you said I was better off Playing a Different Game. An OSR game. PS: To me 5e D&D was too similar to Steve Jackson's TOON Rpg 2ed. Some of us gamers just don't want Cartoon Superhero in our Fantasy RPGs.

    You are aware that acting does not necessarily require a script? And I mean not just improv theatre, but many movies with a full script have actors make up lines on the spot and they often end up in the final version of the film. I would still agree that acting and roleplay are not exactly the same, but there is some overlapping between the two. And I think portraying the character in a game can be called acting out that character, and the other players are the audience. Thus roleplaying just for yourself, for your own mind's eye is not roleplay either, that is just dreaming. But roleplay is supposed to be a shared activity, that means you have to share with the other players what your character is about. Sure, I would say roleplay goes there beyond acting, since mimic and gestures usually not played out but have to be put in words, but you have to show that. In that case, roleplay is indeed very similar to radio plays, that people can listen to, and creating an experience that other people want to listen to sounds not bad to me. Anyway, since you are such a sports guy, I wonder do you rewatch occasionally old matches, or even just special moments from them? If so, why do you think it is bad when roleplayers do that with actual plays, but it is fine for people who watch sports? Or do you think sports have to be scripted to be rewatchable? I know my tone can be sardonic, but I am usually quite jovial, and for the most part try to read things with charity. Regarding crits and fumbles, as a designer I can tell you, the y do not always exactly what they are supposed to do. That is why D&D has no fumbles, and the people who add that to their games make fighters worse than casters, since asters do not roll on the magic but fighters do for their attacks, thus it would ruin the balance. And there are games that have such issues in the finished product. Anyway, I think save or die affects roleplay insofar that it usually removes the opportunity to have a moment of dying, like speaking any last words, thus no expression of any final thoughts the character might have. If you character is just a meeple that goes then back into the box, then I would say you missed out on having there a roleplaying moment. Sure, it doesn't have to be thespian, but do at least something there! But well, maybe the issue is with me, I don't play soldiers, nor do I play rags to riches plots. I want something more, something deeper, an exploration of the human condition. I think a character arc is just as the story, something that emerges, and when it does not, then you probably have not really a character to begin with, but just a meeple on the board. However, I agree with you that d20 is not suited to handle that, which is why I usually avoid that system.

    • @JasonFlashFootball
      @JasonFlashFootball 2 місяці тому

      Well said. I do not disagree with MOST of these observations. I never said making watchable APs is bad. Never. I said, I don't care if they are, I don't watch them. Others, of course, are free to watch whatever they want to. I hate horror movies and do not watch them but that is a matter of taste. Others are free to enjoy horror movies. All your arguments will always fall to this exact thing, "That is a matter of taste". Sorry, there is no "truth" here. I certainly do not "play" to entertain viewers. I share the space with my group only. Hopefully, my group finds my "role-play" contributions entertaining as "in-character" play. But again, I will not engage in "elitist" arguments Drudenfusz. If you want to "act" or "write" please pursue it to the highest possible level of joy. I do not. Role-play is not acting, it is like acting. Role-play gaming is not "writing" but it shares similar creative moments.

      Oddly, your comment on my last video smelled of Shonnerism to me, or that's how it "reads". So, we might be miscommunicating here. Shonner is an asshole and he is entitled to be. Sometimes I can be an asshole as well. People passionate about hobbies sometimes get worked up. I will try again, Save or Die, is not a problem for me or my group. If it is a problem for you then change the rule or try a better game. I rarely confuse 'role-play' with gaming. We can do both, a little of this and a little of that. We can "pretend" and do nothing but role-play but I prefer a little peanut butter in my chocolate. Not all peanut butter, not all chocolate. I do not begrudge how anyone wants to do this thing called "role-play" but I will defend "game" mechanics for good or ill. The mechanic works as intended, you and I do not disagree on the effect of such a mechanic. I don't know how else to say it. But, as a rule, a mechanism, it works regardless of "role-play". Burning Wheel has mechanics I do not like, but I do not claim to have a "problem" with them and there desired intent. I just don't play Burning Wheel. Great game, not my thing.

    As I said - you didn't die. Your character was instantly transmogrified into another character IN THE MIDDLE OF COMBAT. And the "dead" character was completely ignored. (The cleric said he'd do something about a burial but never did.) So the character "death" had absolutely ZERO effect on the party or the world - or the player - and there was ZERO roleplaying of the situation. You're playing it like it's a skirmish game (which OD&D was) - not a roleplaying game (which is what D&D eventually evolved into). As for Monopoly - that proves my point exactly. Going to jail doesn't eliminate you from the game - it's a setback that forces you to adapt - and makes the game more interesting not less. (And when you go bankrupt you certainly don't get to just say "Well I'm going to start a new player who's not not bankrupt and has all the same properties as the other one did.) If the poisoned character had to make a constitution saving throw every hour or lose a point off of each characteristic, it would create a condition and a timer that the party would eventually have to address - and make the game more interesting. But don't pretend anything that happened has anything to do with character death.

      You have the right word in there "game". Think about that. There are indeed other ways to engage the "fiction" using tweaks or different role-playing games. We do not disagree on how "Save or Die" impacts play. However, we are playing this "game" using these rules and this is the effect on the play. What are you having trouble understanding? Different games use different rules and thus they create different experiences. I'll say it again if you have a "problem" with it...Change it or play something else. There is no problem with the mechanics, the rules, or the effect. Unless you are claiming some "elitist" position about "gaming"? If that is your position then you are going to forever be disappointed with how others do this thing. As for "character death". I don't recall making a claim to anything other than the "character is dead" and as a player, you can quit, or roll up another. It is your choice. It seems you want the "game" to come to a halt so everyone can cry about the violent death of a soldier...Pick another game or group. You have the power.
