Tincan Flyer
United States
Приєднався 6 гру 2022
Welcome to my channel, Tincan Flyer! I’m here to share my somewhat unconventional adventure of becoming a pilot-despite being terrified of flying. Yes, you read that right. I’m a pilot who’s afraid to fly!
Why the name Tincan Flyer, you ask? Well, that came from a lighthearted exchange with my flight instructor. When I asked if he’d be willing to give me lessons in something as small as a Cessna 140, he laughed and said, “I’ll squeeze into that tin can, and we’ll have a ball!” From that moment, my trusty little plane became known as the ‘tincan,’ and the name stuck.
But the real story behind this channel is my journey to overcome my fear of flying. I decided to buy my own plane and face my fears head-on, one flight at a time. Tincan Flyer is where I’ll document that journey-the highs, the lows, and everything in between. It’s about the challenges and victories of a scaredy-cat pilot learning to take control of the sky.

My First Touch & Go in a Tailwheel
This video shows my first Touch & Go in a tailwheel aircraft! A Touch & Go involves landing and taking off again without coming to a complete stop. The runway at Woodbine, NJ, is a bit short for a full stop and go (without pulling off and taxiing back), so this was the perfect opportunity to practice. Watch closely during the landing-you’ll see the tailwheel's shadow never meets the tailwheel wheel on the plane, showing that the wheel never touches the ground.
I let this video run longer than usual because you can see a couple neat clusters of buildings on the ground as I'm climbing in the pattern.

I recently purchased a delightful Cessna 140 and have begun my journey into flying tailwheel aircraft-what an adventure it's been so far!
The "Landing Singles" series highlights quick clips of individual landings, showcasing my progress and the invaluable guidance I received from my instructor during my descent. Enjoy!

Vibrant South Jersey Sand Washes
Переглядів 486 днів тому
I'm flying my Cessna 140 over the stunning Sand Washes of southern New Jersey! The view is gorgeous, with the brilliant turquoise hues of the sand washes creating a surreal contrast against the surrounding landscape. It's a unique and unexpected splash of color, especially in the drab browns of winter!
The Bird Swerve on Planned Go-Around
Переглядів 3978 днів тому
In this video, we practice a planned "go-around" procedure, which my instructor explains at the start. As we turn to final approach for runway 28 at Millville Airport, an unexpected encounter with a large bird crossing our flight path prompts my instructor to take quick evasive action to avoid a collision. After that brief moment of excitement, we smoothly resume and complete the go-around proc...
Bounced It Bad at Bucks!

During the approach to Bucks (from the easier side), everything seemed fine, but I cut the power a bit too early and ended up dropping the airplane onto the runway-you can even hear my surprise as we bounced along! It’s a perfect reminder to keep flying your tailwheel all the way until you’ve come to a complete stop! 😂 You’ll notice I lose a bit of control during the rollout. Although this was ...
Wheel Landing on Pavement
Переглядів 28717 днів тому
In this landing, we do a wheel landing at Millville Airport on runway 32. As I turn to "final", you'll get a nice view of Millville Speedway! Landing on pavement is traditionally seen as more challenging than grass, as pavement is less forgiving-any lateral motion during touchdown can lead to a swerve and potentially trigger a ground loop. However, the wide, open runways at Millville give me pe...
Landing "Over the Wires" at Bucks Airport, NJ
Переглядів 4923 дні тому
In this landing, we approached runway 36 at Bucks Airport, NJ (00N) in my Cessna 140, navigating over the wires that make this airport particularly unique. These telephone wires, positioned near one end of the runway, create an obstacle that requires careful attention. After clearing the wires, my instructor had me push the nose down into a dive and then add a touch of power as we leveled off. ...
Gusty Crosswind Landing Practice in a C140
Переглядів 36926 днів тому
In this video, I tackled landings on a day with variable and gusty winds. The real challenge wasn’t the wind speed but its unpredictability, which kept me on my toes, especially in the lightweight C140. It was a fantastic learning experience and a chance to sharpen my skills. You'll see two consecutive landings, complete with helpful tips from my instructor. I recently purchased a delightful Ce...
Starting to get it! - Landing Practice in a C140
Переглядів 9027 днів тому
In this video, I'm starting to get some consistency with my tailwheel landings in my Cessna 140, as noted by the exclamation from my instructor at the end of the video! I recently purchased a delightful Cessna 140 and have begun my journey into flying tailwheel aircraft-what an adventure it's been so far! I got a buckle after surviving my first one for 8 seconds
Hopefully, you weren’t thrown clear of the airplane after the 8 seconds-like I’ve seen happen in some rodeos! 😂
Just curious…What airport is this? Also are you using flaps?
This is Woodbine Airport in NJ, runway 1. I used 20 degrees of flaps - there was a decently stiff crosswind so I kept the flaps light. You may be able to see the windsock when we were on the roll. Thanks for the question!
Nice video man!
The water colors are so cool
This was a planned go-around but the bird added some excitement to the procedure! This is a good reminder to keep your eyes looking out and be ready for anything, birds don't show up on ADS-B yet 😅(along with some other airplanes of course!)
I live at an airport and walk my dog there. There's a flight school so I probably watch 20-30 landings a day. There's a huge range of quality of course and there's massive variation in weather conditions. It can be very entertaining. I've seen some ground loops, blown tires, I've seen first hand the punishment that a Cessna can take. And they take it for decades along with sitting outside in Canadian winters. They are remarkable airplanes. As for a stinker of a landing, it happens to all of us, and long after we get our certificates. The quality of the landing is inversely proportional to the square of the number of people watching.
These airplanes are truly remarkable. I can't imagine that the engineers and builders responsible for these machines would have expected them to still be serving us so well 80 years after manufacture! I laughed out loud at your "quality of the landing" comment, thank you so much for commenting!
The bounce doesn’t look great on video, but from the cockpit, it felt much worse than it appears! A few factors came into play on this one. For starters, I rounded out a bit high because I wasn’t used to the sight picture when landing on grass. Then, instead of giving it a small bump of power like I intended, I accidentally cut the power entirely-resulting in the not-so-smooth touchdown you see here.
Dangerous!!! Don’t try that in a Luscombe or a Pitts!! Louie would not approve 😂
But you make it look so easy! 😂 And besides, there's nothing quite like the feeling of nailing a wheel landing! It's so good!
I'd like to thank my friend Nick for letting me use his camera. But please, nobody tell him that I strapped it to my wing strut! 😬
First!
This was a challenging day! The winds weren't very strong, but they were gusty and kept changing direction. I'm still getting the hang of constantly adjusting to keep the airplane where I want it. If anyone has any tips or tricks for landing in variable winds, I’d really appreciate it!
