Won't pick up oil pressure running backwards!!

A 3406 is a four stroke. It cannot run backwards. Camshaft profile does not allow it.

There was smoke from the exhaust so it was running correct direction, I'd say the air valve in one cylinder was burned/stuck and leaking gases out the air intake

Love that sound! I just finished rebuilding a 4-53. It's still sitting in the shop on the run stand. What would you recommend for breaking it in after first start. Just run it for a while sitting there or run it in the machine it's going in, a Terex Loader? Use it like normal? Take it easy on it? I've heard all kinds of the "best" ways to run it in. How can you tell I don't see the fan running

I can personally attest to how smooth starting those vans were. We had one bought new in May, 1977. One winter (1984 I think) it was below zero for a day or two and that van started in the first two seconds of turning the key. Purred like a contented kitten. She would probably still be running somewhere if rust hadn't taken its toll. I hope someone salvaged the engine.

My buddy has one just like this except that the pipe is lower kinda like a fire pumper, his has a 3406b as well
