To start off i say that the name in the front of the book left there cellphone number, however i don't think cell phones were around back when this book was first purchased, so yeah a little flub on my part. I hope you enjoy this foray into the first monster manual we will be covering in this series!

The superior edition to 5e. Prestiege classes and templates beat all. None of that crappy bound accuracy messing up game balance.

I suggest looking at these books in publication order. UA is a collection of material from Dragon magazine that was slapped together quickly for financial reasons. It doesn't make much sense if you haven't looked at the core AD&D books (MM, PHB, & DMG). Game on!

Don't beat yourself up too much. Even good DMs make mistakes & it sounds like your players are in the wrong hobby. I've never heard of players that stare blankly at the DM unless he has an overarching story to railroad them through. Find a good DM & learn from him by playing at his table for a while. Being a DM isn't easy. Game on!

I think an AC of 20 in 5e is equal to an AC of -10 in advanced dungeon dragons

My preferred way to refer to the 2024 5e is 5 and a Fifth edition, since they don't want to fully commit to it being 5.5

That's a nice, clean copy! I love 2e. Yes, 2e and 1e are compatible, in that you can easily play characters and monsters with either rules set. (Monsters are a tad tougher in 2e due to some power creep.) We played a hybrid 1e/2e back in the day as they rolled out the books. Bards were first in 1e. But you had to play a fighter, switch to Thief, then Druid (all of which broke the normal rules) and then you progressed as a bard. And the rules for which were optional in an appendix in the back of the book. Multiclassing was for non humans. Dual classing was for humans who abandoned a class to take up another, if they met the requirements. The classes in 2e are categorized Warrior, Wizard, Rogue, and Priest. All the classes fall under those categories, they are not classes themselves. So a mage is a wizard, as are specialist wizards, (of which illusionist is an example) but there is no separate wizard class. As the publication cycle wore on and supplement after supplement came out, you could add a "kit" to your class. A kit is a bit hard to define, but it's a cross between a background and a subclass. So a fighter could be a swashbuckler, or a samurai, or a berzerker, etc. Some kits were more potent than others.

I played this game religiously. Sinhle, co-op, 3 players, 4 players, even online a couple of times. All 4 of my kids played it my wife and a couple of our friends. This, and its sequel, are some of the best games ever made.

"Sword of the Kingdom"!!! My kids watched me & my wife play this, then they played it & they couldn't remember Champions of Norrath, so they called it Sword of the Kingdom. Both of these games are excellent even by today's standards.

Just recently returned to BECMI. I have tons of D&D Books from every edition except 4th but I never picked this 1 up. Mostly because I have all the boxes sets. Now I'm kicking myself for not getting it. I'm working off a PDF but that's not the same.

I'm following along with you. I have a pretty decent collection of my favorite systems and rules. The Cyclopedia is my favorite rule tome. It was easier to understand back then and all in one. Today the Old School Essentials system is pretty close but nothing like the B/X or BECMI. This is what we played when we were kids along with 1e Advanced.

I've always used Pen and Paper when making a character. However, I tend to use the Standard Point Arrary of 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, and 8 or the Point Buy System found on page 13 in the PHB. I find this method to be a very good way to make the character you want without the stress of making them too underpowered or overpowered.

The first and kind of only character I have ever made to played is a bard who has the classic rogue backstory but told from a bards perspective. He was raised in an orphanage, sold to assassins and trained to be a killer, and after a botched job went on the lamb from the empire. But not as an edgy rogue, as a doofy bard. Growing up in the orphanage was fine without lasting trauma, the assassins guild taught him real world vocational skills, and the botched job of his graduation assassination actually started a massive sweep of the underground and capturing of thousands of criminals. The whole time though my character is just kind of making stuff up on the fly and doing bard tricks to convince people he is this hyper competent killer who is always 10 steps ahead, when in reality he is just a panicky liar who is more fit to be an entertainer than a hired killer. Somehow despite having a god awful build and a silly concept he has been so far unkillable due to the wide resources bards get.

That is an interesting beginning. I like the idea of a cult that actually WANTS to die or kill in combat to please their gods. It almost makes you reconsider the usual adventurer mentality of 'oh we can just kill them'.

Made me chuckle when you described 5E as an elegant rule set. Then I watched the rest and I understood. Homie, don't wait to start playing different games than 5e. 5e is good, amazing even, but we are in a golden age of content for indie RPGs right now. Go find that gold, you won't regret it

Yeah, DM'ing anxiety is the worst. It's gotten better over time for me, for the most part, but I've noticed it spikes when returning to a campaign after a bit of a hiatus or when I've had a long string of excellent/above-par sessions.
