It's part of the intercoastal waterway which is the interstate highway of ship traffic. It is also the only ship route to the port of Brownsville which serves the South Texas region. The port handles about $3 billion per year of the Texas state's economic activity. Back in the 50's someone began development of Long Island just at the time when Texas was in the process of removing the bridge. I think the state and much wildlife would've been better off if the state would've bought the island and prevented it from being developed. Eventually the rising sea level will meet up with a hurricane and return the area back to nature.

Wister Lane, Shelterwood and TC Jester Blvd. Houses near White Oak Bayou were flooded but water has receded somewhat at this time.
