Backcountry pilot and A&P mechanic
Bristol Bay Beach combing by airplane
Early summer 2022, I took a nine hour day trip to search for walrus, dead and alive, whales, and old glass fishing floats. After 200 miles of crabbing along the black sand beaches at low level and 80mph, I found a bit of everything I was looking for. Adventure to the max.

Pinto Bean V2.0 flys at last
Переглядів 2,1 тис.2 роки тому
It’s been a long year and a half since I wrecked the Pinto Bean. The rebuild was far from smooth but it was well worth the wait. Here is the first flight of V2.0! Many many mods and changes went into this from one end to the other. All with safety, simplicity, and backcountry operations in mind. Let the adventuring begin!
Never before seen footage

Since I wrecked my airplane, let’s check out some never before scene footage from a remote gravel bar island in the Brooks Range, Alaska. This was a warm summer day above the Arctic, but the Pacer did not disappoint. Box canyons can be surprising
Переглядів 1,1 тис.3 роки тому
As cheery as this music might make it, this canyon surprised me due to my lack of time spent looking over topos and general knowledge of the area. While I had a way out all the time, I was lower than I felt comfortable with. Box canyons can sneak up on a pilot, just as this one did for me. Videos can be deceiving but this was a bit to close to my risk management limit. Be careful out there and ...
Pinto Bean V2.0 update 10/2021
Переглядів 9093 роки тому
Guess who’s back? After a long 5 months in the Arctic, and a quick 1.5 week vacation to put meat in the freezer, I am hard at work to help finish up the Pacer. CAUTION: eye candy may cause cavities.

Pinto Bean update

It’s been far to long so here is a update on life and the rebuild of my Piper Pacer!
The Pinto Bean Wreck
Переглядів 7 тис.4 роки тому
I haven’t had the courage to speak up about the past couple months in regards to my Pinto Bean and it’s last flight. I am sure there will be many questions, and some will come with time, but this is where I am at today
Cigars and gravel bars
Переглядів 1,9 тис.4 роки тому
On this flight I took A&P apprentice Joe out flying around the Brooks Range Mountains in the Alaskan Arctic. We saw amazing views of glacial rivers, steep mountains, grizz, caribou, and even a wolf! The end of the flight was less of the type of adventure I like to have but these things happen when flying the backcountry
Friends, food, flying, and drones
Переглядів 8004 роки тому
This pre-covid social gathering was made possible with the help of my best friend Danny Boy and his DJI Mavic drone. A short 6 minute trip from Homer airport put us on this long and wide gravel bar where the winds were non existent and the sun was abundant. We had an extensive briefing on how to occupy the same space safely and wha to expect. I can not wait to do this again soon.
The Alaskan $100 hamburger
Переглядів 1,4 тис.4 роки тому
The idea of the $100 hamburger is simple. You get in your airplane and fly to a near by airport and buy a hamburger at the airports restaurant or cafe. Then fly home. When you figure the cost of AVgas future maintenance on the airplane, insurance, possible landing fees etc. it can easily add up to the famed $100. Here in Alaska, we do things a bit different. No nearby airports, no restaurants, ...
I almost WRECKED my airplane
Переглядів 15 тис.4 роки тому
Shortly after I made my first gravel bar landing, I went to conquer some new spots. I found a gravel bar that I liked and circled it a few times attempting to judge rock size, flatness, debris, wind, approaches and go around options. Things didn’t go as planned and this video explains it all. If it wasn’t for the GoPro on the tail, I would have chalked it up to the characteristics of a short bo...
How I like to promote General Aviation

A local Instagram follower and student pilot flew a Tri Pacer to Homer. He is making moves and has his aim set high. I love his motivation and wish him nothing but blue skies, until IFR training anyways.
Golden Hour flight to Seldovia
Переглядів 7524 роки тому
After taking off from Homer Alaska, a quick 15 minutes of beach and mountain cruising in my Piper Pacer brought me to The small village of Seldovia. The airstrip is less than 2,000ft long, covered in snow and ice and has water on both ends. The quickly rising terrain to the East helped cause a bit of a crosswind and some turbulence on approach and departure. It is important to keep a pilots ski...
Anniversary/Valentines day flight, Alaska style
Переглядів 6364 роки тому
I flew the Pacer from Homer Alaska north to Palmer for work. My return flight was incredible, the video says it all.
Do you still have this beautiful bird?
I miss that plane coming into dillingham. We still get it once in a while but damn that plane is amazing. Boosters are on for sure. Worst part is the belly have to lay in them to unload. And when you use a fork the tail is slightly down. But when it starts up you just can't help but smile. Such an amazing plane with all the gyros and tech from those days
Did you use an stc for the right patrol door before the seaplane door stc?
Good for you man 👍
They used to re-blow them every set. Not enough room aboard the ship. There’s really big ones used for long line Bouy. We used to find jap gear all the time well, long ling for halibut. Born and raised Kodiak Aska.
How do you p00 in there
So cool! More vids please!! You're a fun person to listen to. Keep going!
Thank you!! Unfortunately the pacer is in pieces so I haven’t flown a lot lately. Hoping for more here soon
Great to see the flying footage Rob. Now that you’ve been flying it for a bit, what kind of specs are you getting? Cruise speed, stall speed, takeoff and landing distances? I really like all the mods you put on the new version of your Pacer and want to include many of your choices into my Pacer upgrade. I had a 1954 PA22/20 Pacer for 3-1/2 years and took to the 2023 Oshkosh airshow week. But I ground-looped it in Fort Dodge Iowa on my way back to Washington. So I ended up finding a replacement, a 1956 PA22/20 Pacer with half the hours TT, and it has the larger Lycoming O-320 engine, and the Stewart wingtip mod like you have on Pinto Bean 2. There is a lot more I need to do on it, and you have inspired me to forge ahead… it can be done! Hope to someday visit you up there at your northern fly-in. Thanks for sharing your stuff. Rusty Johnson
Congrats on the new bird! Mine was an Iowa airplane before I picked it up. Feel free to email me or find me on the social medias. Would love to bounce some ideas around for your build! PopsAirService@gmail.com
no , they could not have melted glass out at sea, takes to much space for wood plus could burn the boat up
Ahh. That makes some sense. The fuel required would be heavy and take up a lot of space for sure.
i love seeing the Everts DC-6s flying overhead in Fairbanks!
FORETODICK
Que no ella esa naturaleza y esas eferas de cristal ,que bonitas son !
Bella esa naturaleza SII
Such a cool video! You gotta post more adventures!
Thank you! I plan on it, but unfortunately the airplane is going under the knife so my adventures will be by boat and foot for a bit
😢
She just keeps getting better and better though. The bean is a good steed.
Ok please share where you got the door kits and the moon roof?
There is not ready to go kit. But the stcs are held by Eddie Trimmer of Trimmer aviation in Willow AK. Great, knowledgeable, legend of a engineer, designer, fabricator, and entrepreneur
Nothing stinks worse than a dead walrus...
very cool. Great finds.
Thank you!
The bean look’s awesome man. Keep the videos coming
Were you hanging at King Air's Hangar?
Not sure where that is, but possibly?
Absolutely beautiful job It looks amazing. Love the color scheme.
Thank you! It sure came out nice.
Is that Iguigig you took off from at the beginning?
Nope that’s my lodge at kulik lake, east of king salmon.
Super nice rebuild! I learned to fly in Naknek in a Tri-Pacer on floats - it's an amazing part of AK. Are you working for a lodge up there?
Yes I was. I work for Katmai Air based at kulik for the summers!
Right on, sounds like a good gig. I was contracting on Rapids Camp and Branch River Air aircraft. Getting excited for summer?!
Best bush plane for the money! Looks like fun times!
Oh man is it! Love that paint scheme on yours!
wow, thats amazing, those glass floats, never heard of that at all. Pacer's looking great, thanks for sharing
Thanks Tim. The glass floats are really cool. Quite a treat to find.
im ur 635 sub
I doubt they would be able to get the required temp onboard a ship to make glass to blow balls. 1700 C or 3090 F . Could be wrong .
That’s a point I had not thought about. Maybe I’ll research into this more over the winter too
@@RobOlsenDrye I did think about souveniring the tusks when I saw the dead Walrus but thought they might stink a bit !
@@RGF56 they really weren’t bad at all. But I also didn’t take the whole head
Very sweet! An area I have yet to explore! Stay safe fellow pacer driver!
Is your pacer experimental?
No sir. Certified, quite a few stcs and such
He’s back!
I have some more footage to edit together as well. Just tough to live life, and do all the adult things one is suppose to do!
Awesome to see you back. Are we gonna get a tour of the rebuilt and updated Pacer?
I have more than a few videos I need to edit together. A lot of the mods have been discussed in prior videos if you haven’t seen them
@@RobOlsenDrye I’ll have to check them out. I thought I had seen all of your videos, but apparently, UA-cam hasn’t been giving me notifications. Can’t wait to see more. Such a cool plane.
Nice flying!
Nice to see some off airstrip Pacer action!
My favorite way to use my pacer!
I love your pacer dude, rebuild came out amazing.
Thanks! Not much I would change either
Heck yeah man, good to see you back and this time in the worlds nicest pacer
Haha. It definitely checks all the boxes for me
Having seen this pacer in person, I completely agree! Absolutely beautiful and functional!
@@AkPacerPilot I’m a little jealous haha, hope I make my way to Alaska one day
@@jimecee yeah it’s an amazing place, but the backcountry can eat your lunch up here if you aren’t prepared.
Magnifique !
Sure is a cool sound!
Great work man, I’m happy for you and can’t wait to see the content!
Thanks! I took some video from a flight the other day. Might make a little teaser for ya
Looks good Rob!
Thank you!
Good team
Is that Homer? Which road?
No, I am based in Homer, but the mishap was in Soldotna
Congrats!!
Thanks Burke!
Beauty, love that Pacer
Thanks Rick!
I see a few mods, such as, rear door removed and front left door installed, right yoke removed, and now is a two-place with lots of cargo area. Love it !
Purpose built! But to be fair, from the factory it only had one rear person door. I do love the extra cargo area!
Man i am so stoked for you. I have been hoping you square that away for a while and was worried that maybe like life sometimes happens, got sidetracked. Glad to hear it and youre out and having a ball. I am starting a pressure washing company down here in Juneau and hoping to get back on track for pretty much what you had/have. C19 really put a dent in my plans and wallet haha
It’s been a long journey for sure. And covid didn’t help any. Very happy to be back on the skyroads. Good luck with the power washing business! I hope it serves you well and helps keep you flying!
Nice work!
Just found your channel. Very nice.
Thank you for following along. Hoping to produce way more videos now that my adventure machine is back in action
How is it getting in and out over the higher door sills? Thinking about doing the sea plane doors.
Not bad, I have a long step and I’m flexible, which helps. Still better than sliding over from the right
Looking better than ever!
Always forward, always up. Never backwards!
@@RobOlsenDrye unless you have Draco. Reverse thrust can make you go backwards 😜
Haha. True true. Next mood maybe? 🤔
Congratulations mate, have a safe and fun year!
Thanks Tim!
Absolutely fantastic!!!! Hands down, best looking pacer, Period!
Thanks Andy! Been a long time coming
@@RobOlsenDrye we will absolutely have to meet up and bus around this summer
Heck yes! See you at Valdez maybe?
@@RobOlsenDrye maybe, if I go to Valdez it will likely be a fly in for one day, the Saturday. It’s an in between for me at work and I’d normally get trades from work but I’m taking a trip down to the lower 48 to get my complex endorsement and get a bunch of ifr time towards my instrument rating.
Fantastic! I look forward to seeing ya there and watching your ifr progress!
Well done sir! Thanks for the teaser. Now we're all awaiting your debrief with great anticipation as to the specific upgrades, mods and credits for whom assisted. I'm digging the skylight, blown out baggage area and the wingtips to name several mods that interest me.
Awesome! I got in three east landings yesterday, nothing but myself and full fuel, with the battery forward and the big tailfeathers, etc. I still could easily touch tail first. More to come soon!
To answer your question from another video, the tips are stewart tips. It’s all fabric, no plastic or composite tip. Gives a simple look, doesn’t impede visibility like a droop tip and increases surface area!
@@RobOlsenDrye They look great. My guess is they give you a little more wing area but not to much that would create decreased aileron authority assuming your ailerons are staying as original.
Aileron is stock, there isn’t a legal way to change that, yet. But I bet you are right, it’ll help round out the other mods
