Trekking The Globe - Week 9: Nordic Countries
Love it! Our universal Yums box (which we started due to your suggestion) is South Korea this month and we cannot wait for it to arrive
Students in 7th and 5th grade who struggle with reading would you start them in book 1? or what reccomendation do you have?
This should be week 13, right?
I'm realizing that you have probably already finished Korea, but if you're interested, we found this youtube playlist from a family who visited Korea with their kids and my kiddos are loving it! They are a Mormon family, but there is nothing overtly religious about the content, but because the mom served as a missionary to South Korea years ago, they have friends to stay with and know the language. It's really fantastic and our kids are now begging to take a trip to Korea. (Hopefully, the Koren restaurant in the town next to us satisfies them for now! hahah) ua-cam.com/play/PLhpqJoEG_-Fd1TdCpRgnb--yIhqVnR0cQ.html
We do AAR and ETC and MWC with beast academy. My son has dyslexia so we need to break up with reading to help build confidence. My son also gets bored and the BA comic book style he loves.
Thanks for introducing me to a new resource! This was a really great, thorough review.
Where did you find the pdf download to print at home?
This was actually from our parent partnership program.
Thank you for making these videos. You guys have become such a valuable resource in my homeschooling!
It's always fun to hear what you guys are doing! Have you considered trying Kate Snow's Multiplication Facts That Stick?
I was about to mention the facts that stick series.
We actually haven’t tried that yet. I’ll look into it!
@@HomeschoolTogether It's a good mix of games and worksheets. The facts are only zero to ten, but it's great for those 6,7,8 and 9 facts that can be hard. There are a good amount of used copies floating around to save money.
We recently started AAR level 4 and AAS level 2, and it's going great! AAS is great since it's not just memorizing the words. It teaches the rules behind the concept. We use mini writables, tile app, and a spelling notebook to make it a little more fun.
Tell your daughter that it’s not a test it’s an assessment and they are very different things. She isn’t supposed to know everything ❤ They keep asking kids questions to see how advanced they are until they reach their max. So getting questions wrong at the end is what is supposed to happen.
Can we have a video of the math on the go kit?
I just started the Blossom and Root prehistory with my 7 and 5 year old and am bouncing back and forth between your video and my library website to request all of these books! Thanks as always for your videos!
I can't imagine I'd have literally survived a homeschooling attempt... Parents are the first tyrants; I hope the village has its eye on y'all.
We have loved this game for years but still don't own a copy, surprisingly. So, I think I may add it to our Christmas pile. :)
We use small zipper bags from Amazon with little keychain labels. They all live on a shelf on my homeschool cart.
My kiddo is almost 5 and he’s devouring the lessons! He wants to do math EVERY day (we make him take 1 day off a week)!
How much times does this take daily?
We usually do about an hour a couple days a week and read books every day.
We're getting ready to start our own Around the World Journey in February. I didn't schedule out specific weeks, but instead made a list for every country in Trello and I've dumped our content in it. That way I can schedule out as we go while we're learning about that country/region. We're also deciding to do a biomes study as opposed to an animal study which I believe will inspire what countries we group together. How is your youngest experiencing the jumping around as opposed to the way you traveled with your oldest? My kiddo is obsessed with the Arctic, so I know we'll be starting in Canada. But the idea of traveling based on when certain events are taking place in our community sounds so fun! Is it helping the little to retain or relate more? With your oldest, I believe you expressed concerns it may dilute her understanding of where these places were. What are your thoughts now?
I definitely think it’s a mixed bag. The local experiences are making a much bigger impression on our younger daughter but the hopping around is disorienting and she has a lot more trouble finding these countries on a map. I do believe that the experiences will stay with her though so I’m happy we chose this route.
We’re starting homeschool next month. We chose this too. We’re all quite excited :)!!
I know I'm catching up months behind, but if it helps settle the Encanto debate, I believe you're both right. Abuela was in charge of all the magic in the house, and when her choices started dividing the family, the house began to crack. In the end, Mirabel becomes responsible for her family's gifts and magic, which restores the house-essentially taking over Abuela's role.
Thank you for validating my side!
Thank you so much for this in depth preview of AAR!
Thank you for the movie night recommendation! We are doing BYL 0 and we're currently covering Asia so this movie looks like a lot of fun. :)
We're doing dnealian with savvas. Is the writing same?
Any thoughts on how this would compare to Math U See?
Math U See isn’t strictly secular so we haven’t done a comparison with it.
Great listen.
Looking forward to using this next year with my daughter!
I relate to this so much! I usually volunteer way too much and end up with way too many things on my plate. It's so hard. I usually end up in bed with a migraine because I just can't stop myself from trying to help everyone and forget to prioritize my own health.
We love strega nona!
Digital scrapbooking? Have you shown this before? Apparently I’ve been living under a rock.
Now that I think about it I haven’t actually shown it only talked about it. That might be something to think about recording in future.
How did I only just find this now?! Brilliant!
Volume 2 was our favorite of the Early Years. I'm looking forward to starting it with my little one soon.
Thank you for bringing cook list to my attention! I’m loving it! Do you have a referral code? There is a spot in my account that I can add it to.
No we don’t. But glad you’re enjoying it!
It’s got tons of games. I enjoyed it as much as my child. 👍😁
I emailed for your schedule! Hopefully you guys are still sharing!! Thank you so much!
Sydney & Taylor is another early chapter book series that is similar to Mercy Watson.
Ooo we’ll have to check that out!
Do you have game recs for learning to read?
This one is really about what will interest your kiddos. We tried scrabble junior and other junior type games but it really came down to what our daughter wanted to play that would motivate her to read. She was much more motivated by our Harry Potter card game. For very early readers any game with words that they start to decode is awesome. For older readers something like Mrs Bernard is a wild card is great for sentence structure and reading practice.
Thanks for a great review! I would love you to do BR level 2 or 3 if you have time. We’re doing level one now and it’s so good!
We plan to do all the levels. Stay tuned!
My oldest loved taking her time with each activity. My second was, "Nice! What's next?" We could go through the whole week in one day easily with her.
Same same!
Can you do a flip through for beginning multiplication and division? Maybe level 2.
We’re planning to do all the levels. Stay tuned!
Hah! I loved the “commiseration” vibe to this episode 🤣 just a quick correction- in California, the PSA stands for *private* school affidavit (meaning you are reporting your tiny private school’s existence) and there is no reporting or testing component with that. For better or worse with the PSA, there is no oversight for parents/guardians using this option. I like to explain it like this- California doesn’t actually have any specific homeschooling provisions the way many other states do it, rather we have some ways to check the compulsory school attendance box and some ways likely allow for educating by caregivers, but it’s not explicit permission to do so granted by the state. The status quo here has always felt a bit tenuous to me, and my opinion is home educating families in California should always pay some attention to the policy changes and debate around our educational options.
Thanks for the great info!
Oh my! So many similarities!!
Thank you very much for sharing this wonderful resource for SCIENCE and taking the time to explain its methodology in detail. Truly helpful. Love it! Best wishes to all!
Congratulations!! Regarding asking questions: it's easier to ask online than in real life. I've noticed people not being that open when I asked them in person. Some even get a little defensive, like I would judge them or something. I would love to be able to just sit down and really talk about homeschool related issues, but others are not that receptive to that. I'm neurodivergent, so it took me a while to get that people didn't want me to ask them questions. Oops. Just know that your episodes have helped me more than you can imagine. I often have tons of questions, and would love to have a virtual cup of coffee with you just to chat about homeschooling, but sometimes it's hard to type it all out. Ooh! Maybe more podcasts on neurodivergent homeschoolers? Homeschooling gifted or 2E kids? Maybe you made a lot of content on those topics and I just missed them, and if that's the case, I apologize. I've been trying to catch up with all the UA-cam channels I subscribe to, so sometimes I miss things.
Those are great suggestions! So glad it’s been helpful to you!!
I just want to say how much I appreciate your videos. I watched all the level 1 weekly videos and now I’m really enjoying the trekking the globe series. I also ordered Universal Yums and cannot wait for our first box!
Ooh enjoy!!
This was so helpful! Thank you! I have a lot of days that I just need breaks because of my own health issues, and it can be hard.
Congratulations on 400 episodes!
Thank you!
Which curriculum has the food? or is it something you added?
They both have food but we found the Cooking Class Global Feast to be the more accessible book. It’s part of BYL.
Thanks for another video! Would you happen to have one on doing an introduction to geography?
The first week of this program and our touring the world are geography overviews. But you can definitely add a geography workbook to enhance that aspect. We liked the Evan moor skill sharpeners one.
Winter olympics will be in italy
