MLS was in charge of the marketing for the US Open cup from 2005 - 2022. It's MLS' fault.

Instead of that stupid pointless cash grab of the leagues cup, we should have instead a proper champions cup instead with a group stage where it's more fair for Liga MX bc they'll host games.

The only time i cared about USOC was when Sacramento Republic was one game away from winning it. Now, with this format, there will be more Sac Republic's and Rochester Rhinos having a better chance of WINNING and thus Qualifying for CONCAChampions!

As far as marketing the US Open Cup was concerned: For a large chunk of the 21st century (2004-2021) Soccer United Marketing (SUM), an MLS subsidiary, was in charge of marketing many US Soccer properties, including the US Open Cup. US Soccer terminated (or didn’t renew) that arrangement for 2022. While US Soccer certainly is not blameless, it was MLS that ran the marketing in recent times. I also recognize that this can be a difficult tournament to market. I am encouraged by CBS’ increasing involvement in soccer, especially via Golazo Network, which is free. Actual game broadcasts are average, but I really enjoy a lot of their shows and internet content. Good discussion on the Cup.

I regularly watch the Richmond Kickers in person, and they are an hour and some change from where I live.

Really disspapointed, I wanted the timbers to try and win it. The only trophy that actually has meaningful history in this countrh but we'll kill it for a plastic tournament that even the Mexican teams don't wanna play.

Away days is a cool concept. The Guy that runs it Martin always sends a quick note. My son did a three month subscription in 2023, and I got him one for last Christmas. Always sends email once kit is send so you have tracking info and know when to expect the kit. We so far have been very happy with the sections.

Dempsey fell off harder than a recovering alcoholic at Oktoberfest. Dude fucking sucked in his final years, but his legacy kept getting him starts and first order substitutions even though he couldn’t produce. 14:12 MLS is already the size of all of the major American sports leagues at 30. MLB and the NFL have 32 each and have been at that number for decades now with no plans to move beyond that number. The NBA and NHL both have mad lip-service to expansion in Seattle and Quebec City respectively but are reluctant to go to 31 teams. If MLS moves beyond 32 they will be in uncharted territory. No other league in this country or anywhere else has ever been that big as far as I know. The very fact that they would expand beyond 32 would in and of itself be unusual since the whole point of a closed league is to maintain franchise values and control revenue sharing. So I doubt they expand beyond 32 teams, but if they do...who knows what they're thinking. At that point they'll already be tossing out the normal business model.

As a guy from the UK who supports a championship side in the EFL. I've always been intrigued by how the MLS is only one league. Do you think that maybe adding the element of relegation could impact the MLS in a positive way?

Ask Sacramento Republic fans how important the Open Cup is. MLS doesn't care because they aren't fan-oriented, they are owner-oriented (and certainly not youth development-oriented). Open Cup is based on fan attendance--TV is a nice-to-have but not a must-have. Garber hates that because it runs counter to his holy NFL model which must be crammed down on all soccer in this country. USSF should let MLS opt out of Open Cup, but what are the consequences? Sure, Garber, bail out on Open Cup. But now MLS teams can no longer qualify for Champions League as it can only be done now through Open Cup qualification. USSF should institute a proper pyramid, enable pro-rel among all other US clubs, sue to recover training and solidarity payments for the balance of the sport and thus encouraging actual youth development. But USSF doesn't have the stones, not the interest in managing that whole process. It's much easier to sit back and take the kickback from MLS and just focus on Nats teams.

Imagine how many people would turn in to watch the final cup game if Taylor Swift did a pregame performance. 😉

The MLS final game felt too much like just another MLS game. Think there needs to be more build up and hype! There needs to be more marketing! The average person has no clue that the playoffs were being played and that the final occurred when it did. Bring in big name artists to play prior to the game or during halftime. A halftime or pre-game performance. For the final cup game…go BIG or go home!

Let’s get more cameras mounted to the goal post to monitor the goal line! Too many misjudged calls this past season.

I feel like 2024 would be to soon to start up pro/rel they need to take their time with this. in terms of league structure it make sense to have championship league one and league two. rename league two back to PDL also they shouldn't have fees to join the league if they want to join they can but they would start out in the lowest division. hopefully if this is successful we could see more divisions form top 3 or 4 divisions could be the soccer league as you go lower you get to the non league where those clubs are amateur/ semi-pro clubs

Jordan, here there is a proposal considering the current franchised close shop model in US soccer. Can this change with MLS owners having not incentives to open up? I think it could with the right compensation to current owners. $500 mill is the current fees paid for MLS access. If the league implements relegation of say 3 teams per season in a 30 MLS franchise Tier1, there is a 10% chance of relegation that did not exist. Compensate each owner with $50 million to open the gates. Total cost $1.5 billion that will come from MLS2 expansion rights (I am aware most owners paid much less than the current $500 mill but this is the value they see now with the current set up of teams and very low financial risk). Then put a proposal for 16 initial projects that will have a franchise in MLS2 for $100 million. This MLS2 has 3 teams promoting each season to MLS1. Probability of promotion is 18.7% the first year (3 out of 16). $100 million give you a 18% chance to be in MLS1 within a year without paying the current $500mill. There is a small premium paid by the owner that goes to the house (MLS) fir organising all this. $1.6 billion received from 16 new franchises in Tier 2, €1.5 billion to current operators of MLS1 and €100 for MLS to decide what to do with. This may open the gates….. then MLS2 continue to expand from 16 to 18, 20 and so on on MLS2. The fees will increase over time from the €100 mill baseline to start on Tier2 but with the possibility to become an establish MLS1 team if things are done right. The same process can split to a regionalised tier 3 with lower entry fees but opportunity for promotion and so on…..

To me it makes no sense the American competition format for soccer. Soccer is a low score sport unlike the other major American sports so deciding the best of the year through regularity makes more sense that going into a play off to decide that. Leagues reward the regularity while the “cups” are the knock out competitions. Having the hybrid for the “league + play off knock outs” is similar to running a 42kms marathon with 30 runners for several hours. Then take the first 16 runners in the marathon to run the sprint 100 meters to decide who is the best in 9 seconds.

I personally thoroughly enjoyed leagues cup. I hope it returns next year in the same fashion. I wouldnt change anything about it.
