How to be Broke BETTER
In this video I show the top three areas where Katie and I allocate over 80% of our road trip budget! From battling high gas costs to managing campground fees, and the surprising ways we save on food, we've got you covered with practical tips and personal experiences. We start by discussing how gas is our biggest expense due to our truck's thirst for diesel and share strategies for managing this unavoidable cost. Next, we explore how we balance staying at free campgrounds with splurging on paid sites to avoid burnout. Finally, we reveal how we spend over $1000 a month on food, offering budget-friendly hacks to save on groceries, including why we avoid fast food and how smart shopping can make a big difference. We also touch on the benefits of shopping at stores like Walmart and Grocery Outlet, choosing no-name brands, and using budgeting tools for meal planning. Whether you're a fellow road-tripper or just looking for ways to save on groceries, this video has something for everyone. Hit that subscribe button and join us on our journey as we navigate the road and our budget!

    As a young (relatively) wealthy person, I feel attacked 😅 The point about being uncomfortable about comparative wealth is spot on (and I'm not even that wealthy it's just that I live in a relatively poorer country) I do try to fight consumerism, but when I do buy I do try to shop, well, not necessarily local, but more "ethical". It definitely is because it makes me feel better, but it makes me feel better because I truly believe it is the right thing to do (in my situation)

    maybe this is a hot take, but I feel like SO many (actually all) of the camper influencers that I follow are extremely authentic and share both the good and the bad! Just like in life. I know there are "perfect" van life creators but that is a dying trend! There are so many authentic people online sharing this lifestyle

    I think the housing/rent crisis in the US is leading to an increase in the Campfluencer as well. People are just saying, eh, fuck it - if I’m having to shovel over 50% of my monthly take-home pay to housing, then I’m just gonna quit my job and fuck off for the summer living in my vehicle, but maybe that’s a topic for another video. Anyways, Great video!

    As a person who does bushcraft and camping I'd say, you can still find people who display this hobby without filters like camping with Steve or if you wanna get into bushcraft you got dave canterbury and guys like endurance room, overall all of them and many like them show struggle and beauty of this hobby not just fancy pants gear and vans and thier perfect looking vegan food, it supposed to be affordable fun that's rewarding and teaches you important skills and helps you bond with people

    Such a fantastic argument, and 10000% accurate. Please continue to share a more accurate version of “life on the road”… The roadtripping adventure entails BOTH beauty and hardships. Those that find the balance, yet recognize both the positive and negative through these experiences are the ones I respect, not the glamorized falsities 👏❤ As an avid backapcker/ trail runner, the “grind” is a huge part of the reward and journey. Keep it up!

    this whole video: "I cant research and plan ahead" "I sacrificed affordability for comfort, also him why is camping so unaffordable." "I cant wake up early or stay up late to see beautiful lighting in beautiful places therefore its fake and not real" "I don't know how to budget and make money on the road therfore fuck people who do" "I don't have life figured out and resent those who do" end point: if he can do it so can anyone, to lower the expectations of what is and what it takes to go camping long term on the road, I mean fair enough but what a downer way to do it lol

    One other thing is that the pictures you see in the reels are always perfect weather. At one point, you hit the nail perfectly when you talked about how things happen on the road, just like they do at home. It may be a flat tire you have to change, vs a power outage at you that you can't even fix, so you just wait.

    No one ever discusses the day after spicy chicken wings and having the runs while hiking alone a river. I can tell you, after a couple of stops the cold water on your butt hole is way more enjoyable then the view. Great video and the dirty shirt says a lot.

    This is probably why I enjoy the ones who show their real mishaps during their trips more. Real reactions, emotions AND you still experience the reasons why they still go. I can't stand the amount of people that 'act' and go overboard

    YES. I’m not a vanlifer, but I do hike/backpack and people don’t really understand what goes into it. The views are 1000% worth the trek, however, you’re dirty, stink like hell, look disheveled, probably are sore, tired because no one actually sleeps well on a sleeping pad unless you’re really used to it, and cold soaked (or even some backpacking meals/ cook stove meals) are unappetizing. I definitely love the nomadic lifestyle and have been evaluating options for a few years, but like you said, it’s really not free. In fact, it’s kind of more expensive depending on the build and where you’re traveling.

  • @ayjay579
    @ayjay579 18 днів тому

    I think the issue is with audiences. Videos typically don’t perform as well if you’re honest about what van life is like. We’re kinda forced by the algorithm to make this life look as beautiful and perfect as possible.

    Agreed! I went on an epic journey with my friend to Yosemite. Our mustard bottle exploded due to altitude, we found out we only brought one towel, out food was stolen from a communal fridge, alone with my wallet, my friend’s sandals broke, and our brakes almost caught on fire while driving down a steep grade. Life happens and these things make for super fun stories, but are often HORRID when you’re going through it!

    My Meal at McD's cost about $4. (Large coke $1.20, medium fry $free, McChicken $2.70) Costco frozen chicken, on-sale hamburger that I freeze, freezing costco hotdogs, freezing mushrooms on sale, freeze cheese on sale, freeze butter on sale, freeze everything you can. My average meal that I cook is roughly $1 Good luck everyone, we need it

    Solid video. As far as food, frozen 1 pound rolls of ground turkey are really cheap. I meal prep 2 cups of pinto beans with 1 cup of uncooked rice, an onion and 1 roll of turkey. It makes 5-6 meals. I’m not able to give you a price per meal, I get all of my rice for free (same with eggs), so it would be different for you. As far for breakfast 2 boiled eggs with half a cup of oatmeal with a quarter of an apple diced into it. Dinner is where I usually splurge. But I live in a house, not over the road.
