We enjoy the marina at the port of Gladstone and explore the area. One of Australia's largest and busiest ports, it also has modern marina, friendly yacht club and surrounding bays and islands to enjoy.

    Kevin, since I do similar single handed small boat sailing, I would be interested in what you have in terms of safety equipment and what you do for risk mitigation. Do you have liferaft, epirb, mob ais beacon ? What scenarios do you consider and how do you mitigate ? For example, I sealed up most of the old through hulls; I carry two anchors ; two vhf radios, one hand held; when alone always on safety harness etc. Would really welcome your thoughts here.

    • @kevingreen_boating
      @kevingreen_boating 6 місяців тому

      Safety gear I have includes offshore lifejackets, EPIRB, PLB and harnesses. For inshore sailing in Australia a liferaft is not a legal requirement but on a larger boat would be a consideration, but space is limited on our 25 footer. However, it remains a concern for me because my rubber dinghy takes time to blow up even with electric pump. I also carry and AIS and 2 vhfs. Seacocks are a worry - my self drainer pipe broke causing a leak - even though I'd checked it beforehand. Large anchors are essential I carry three. Also I use anchor weights - essential in heavy weather. Passage planning includes identifying ports of refuge - which can be difficult on Australia's east coast because of many sandbar entrances.

    We have anchored in the Susan River overnight to await the incoming tide to allow Tui of Opua to motor up the Mary River to Marlborough. We had the same problems with the holding in the Susan River. When we were heading back out of the River Heads area Tui of Opua did a 180 degree turn in the overalls at the entrance to the Mary River. This only happened the once as we paid more attention to the timing of the tides on the 2 other occasions we went up the river to Maryborough

    great video, however at 6:06 you use the winch wrong, a great way to jam your fingers/hand!! the correct way is to go round the winch with the line/sheet at least a hands width away from the drum, so if load comes on quick, you can 'dump' it, without it slamming your hand into the drum and have your palm facing inwards, so if it flies off, you can just open your fingers, and your palm isn't trapped between the rope and drum. One other thing, use the self tailer at the top, this GRABS the rope, so the drum can do it's thing, and you don't have to constantly provide tension to the turns; and have enough turns to do the job, three is great, as it provides some grip to hold the lines position, but more is better, esp. for headsail and mainsheet as they have a lot of load on them, and these extra turns allow slow release, feeding the rope around the drum to slack it off slowly and safely.
