Streisand was way to young to play that part. It was like she married him at 13 and then lost him at 18. Carol Channing should have been allowed to reprse her Broadway role. It would have made the film much more believable.
She has always possessed a natural talent to perform -- the physicality of her movements with coordinated gestures and expressions. And at such a young age. Oh, and that VOICE!
My mom raised me on ALL musicals. My favorite being Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella with Leslie Ann Warren, but anything with Barbara I can watch on repeat. I would perform all the songs for my mom in our living room and kitchen with the movie playing on the T.V. My mom would insist that I show everyone my little one woman show. Still love to sing these songs for her to cheer her up. Good memories, Thank you Barbara.

This brings back memories of my childhood when I too wore the video tape out watching this everyday. Met and saw Darren a few weeks on a cruise ship can’t believe I got to sing with this man. Dream made true. Such a lovely man ❤
Every moment of this is complete perfection. Every note, movement, expression could not be improved. A treasure.

I found a ticket for this in an old scrapbook of my sisters
"Dolly Levi, you are a damned exasperating woman!"
It would go sooo well with cold snap,Shattered wings and any skin
I was 6 years old when I saw that movie in the theater. From the very first second I was riveted in my seat, completely enraptured by the sights, the voices, the orchestrations, just the entire experience. When it ended I didn't want it to be over and I threw the biggest hissy fit of my life. lol People thought I had been hurt I was screaming so loudly and so inconsolably. To say the movie affected me would be a great understatement. lol
I never felt her age was an issue, her portrayal as the grieving widow healing herself by positively manipulating others in wise, mother hen fashion was perfectly executed. Her singing elevated her portrayal to dizzying heights along with her sharp, quick wit. What let the film down was WM being too old making her chase of him seem absolutely unfathomable.
The video starts in a wide format then at about 25:50 jumps to 4:3, which is correct. It slightly improves the definition as well.
Ah yes, the fixer.
TRIVIA : The Harmonia Gardens set was destroyed / melted down and used in the final scene in Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) . P.S. Have you EVER SEEN the Mad Magazine Barbra cover from back in the day ? LOL. Google : " Mad Magazine Hello Dolly cover " for. a good laugh.
Summer Holiday translated extremely well from the big screen to the stage. There were loads of great songs and dance numbers in this production. Why do they say ‘sidewalk’ and not ‘pavement’ in this show? Summer Holiday is set in England and various parts of Europe. Summer Holiday doesn’t take place in America and none of the characters of American, so why do they say ‘sidewalk’?
1:42 -- Why is Dolly talking as if she's from the South? Dolly is supposed to be extraordinarily skilled when it comes to being charming and persuasive, but it definitely sounds as if Streisand is using a touch of Southern drawl in this little exchange.
So much better that the stage musical's opening.
This summer's revival on the West End opens with this song. Took a lot of inspiration from the film.
Love the lyrics..so clever
Totally bloody brilliant 😀😀😀
I was working as a freelance cartoonist and illustrator when I got a call from an editor was having a meltdown over meeting a tight deadline. Knowing I could create what she needed within the short time frame, I assured her, "Just leave everything to me." After hanging up, I said "I've been waiting ever since I first saw HELLO, DOLLY! to say that!!!"
My grandmother and her ladies’ club traveled to New York City to see a 1968 theatrical performance of “Hello Dolly,” starring Pearl Bailey. My grandmother could not stop talking about it after she came home. I was just 7. So whenever they started playing this movie version of “Hello Dolly” on TV, I was sure to watch because my grandmother loved the play so much. Such a special memory. RIP Grandma. ❤🙏
This first came to TV in the Winter 0f 1974 . It was on CBS .
You can find a recording of Pearl Bailey singing Hello Dolly on YT! They gave her an honorary Tony for her portrayal of Dolly and she's SO. GOODDDDD!
What a beautiful memory of your grandmother.
Omg i want her gloves what are they calledd
Nice gloves ?
Have a good day from production ideas😀
Ask Warren Noeldechen. On the Fox 🦊 Lot. And some cute guy from the city...the director Kelly and his sainted relative...made him take violin and dance...my uncles 2. Rudy lines.
No other singer even comes close!!!!
Stolen from the bluray. I hope you get prosecuted.
Miscast. Not at all like ‘The Matchmaker’ which ‘Hello, Dolly!’ was based. She was a meddling, middleaged widow.
It amazes me that they got away with the lyric 'marriage consumated'.😂
I can’t believe how good this still is and sounds… boy has West End-quality taken a nose dive. I have to wonder if “advancement” in technology is partly to blame
great episode I love Audra! Crazy that they blamed her for shuffle along closing💀
One of my favorite movies.
Que hermosa película. Me trae muchos recuerdos y Barbra esta espectacular.
She's charming and beautiful as a younger Dolly. No can touch thoses vocals, fantastic! However it did at the box office, her voice is glorious in it! "Hello Barbra"!
Es un todo un clásico de calidad incomparable desde el director Sr. Kelly y todos los actores bailarines etc. Es una vitamina de energía buenas vibras es maravilloso
She's impressive.
What's always been interesting to me is that aside from the age factor Barbra was absolutely perfect for this role. You totally buy her as this busybody who arranges things for people and acts as matchmaker. Fits like a glove. It's only Barbra's age that's under question here, and it wasn't her idea! She didn't want to do this! But in the end despite all the drama of this production she turned out one hell of an entertaining performance. You just have to suspend disbelief around the age thing.
If she didn’t want o do it then why did she?
@@kaitlynrowena5463 when she signed her first movie contact it was a multi-picture deal. 20th century Fox wanted Barbra and she wasn't in a position to turn it down so she made the best of it.
If you want your torso pounded, so she's a part-time madam too?😂😂🤣🤣
That was so interesting, thank you so much
Streisand was wholly unsuited for the role. That’s why the film flopped at the box office. The films budget was a whopping $25M (for 1969) and the film returned a paltry $400K (source: IMDB), half of which it earned on opening weekend. It was such a flop it was never released to foreign markets‼️In fact, it single-handedly killed off big budget musicals for decades‼️ In fact, this film so financially crippled Fox that it only released one film the following year‼️ There was a reason the great Walter Matthau detested Streisand‼️ Julie Andrews turned down the role. Carol Channing, who originated it on Broadway, was never considered. Doris Day, Carol Burnette, Debbie Reynolds and Shirley MacLaine were considered and rejected‼️ Streisand herself, when she appeared on ‘Actor’s Studio’ with James Lipton, said she was far too young for the role and should never have accepted it‼️
Her vocals are fantastic! They alone made plenty of money I'm sure! You say potato and I say Pah Tah TOE! Yes, she was young for the role, but that voice! I won't split hairs or get into it Anymore. A right to your opininon.....
@@edwardnashen5960 Wrong‼️ If you re-read everything you missed, you will realize I wrote FACTS not opinions. So you can mash your potatoes‼️
@@Djm8520 Arrogant man. GTH! Barbra has the last laugh. PLEASE DON'T CONTACT ME AGAIN. "SO LONG DEARIE"!
@@edwardnashen5960 Facts don’t know snark‼️
@@Djm8520 I wave my little hand and sing" So Long Dearie"!!!. Basta!!! Have some more rum in your eggnog, Ebeneszer McBroom, speaking of Snark. Enough! You know what you what you can do with your precious facts! I'm out!
Not too young. Just right. Fantastically right. F off Patti Lapone. And these vocals. Sorry, I would not be able to sit through Carol Channing in the movie.
Barbra was Magnificent in Hello Dolly. The Problem was....Who, in their right mind, wanted Walter Matthau? No romantic chemistry at all..he seemed liked her grumpy, crotchety Father. But...Barbra sang the HELL out of that score. 💯
So many good times I ❤ you Barbara the coolest woman I know she is really good people she keeps it real and fabulous ❤❤❤
I ❤ Barbara she is truly blessed and Lord knows she just has a gorgeous way of pulling you in to All of the fun and adventurous good times with her movie's
I don't understand why the big camera moves are so shaky. Yes, this was before Steadicam, but other movies didn't have this problem. Fire the boom operator!
XXX Angel
1969, theoretically there were atleast a few people who were actually alive in the edwardian era to see this movie
Just before this clip starts, the camera is trained on the back of her head as we await that face. She slyly turns and looks up and down at the camera (us), and then decides we're fit to hear her sing. She's wearing one of my favourite outfits here. There were a number of stills taken with this outfit and it's astounding the amount of features and details in the dress. My main issue with this very enjoyable film was the casting of the other characters. Matthau had no chemistry with Streisand, Michael Crawford looked emaciated, and talented actors like Sandy Duncan, Ann-Margret, and Joanne Worley were tested but not used. E. J. Peaker? Marianne McAndrew? Judy Knaiz? It could have been better.
My main issues with the movie is overly long and needed to TRIM some of the lesser songs out. "Goodbye Dearie" and "Ribbons Down My Back" are pretty boring. Joanne Worley was fine in that small role . Why even bother to replace her ? Not sure what you mean about Michael Crawford looking emaciated . Back then MEN were naturally slim. Geez, even Steve McQueen was scrawny and thin.
It is such a fantastic mo ir, cast and score. One of my all time favorites. Ms. Streisand was fabulous!
Is the quality good for anyone?. Its not too good for me.
