Drift Setup Guide for 4th Gen Camaro
Переглядів 4,2 тис.5 місяців тому
In this video I go over everything we have learned in the past few years about drifting a fourth gen Camaro. The video goes over the drivetrain, suspension, interior, and exterior modifications on my car. I'm hoping this video helps encourage others to try drifting their own 4th gen F-body cars so if you have further questions feel free to comment or contact me at the Instagram page or email li...
DIY Volvo Power Steering Pump Controller and Camaro Drifting
Переглядів 14 тис.Рік тому
This video goes through how I made a CAN bus controller for an electric Volvo power steering pump and put it in my drift Camaro. Then we have some drone footage from Spirit Peaks Raceway at the end. READ BEFORE ATTEMPTING Please note that I made a mistake in the video regarding the power steering rack lines. It should be that the 16mm (top port on the rack) is the return line and the 18mm (bott...
Is there a way to not need variable speed, so say the code tells pump to run constant 100%?
So no potentiometer..
There are a few ways to do this. One would be taking line 67 in the code and replacing analogRead(A0) with a hard-coded number from 0 to 1023. This will fix the speed adjustment value rather than actually reading what the pot says. I believe you would want to set it to 0 for 100% pump speed but try 1023 if that doesn't work.
Great Job
I'm in the process of setting up one of my 4th gens up from drifting. Who did the angle kit
What you see in the video is a prototype version of the angle kit we sell at Octopus Autosport. We are out of stock right now but will have more early next year
Great video, this is awesome. As a fellow 4th gen owner, I love seeing what you've done with it. Badass. These cars don't get enough respect and are big time slept on due to looks. I've owned my '02 Z28 for 20 years now and still love it to death, I've got it set up for the mountain roads/track with a full UMI/Viking set up and its ridiculously fun.
Thanks it's always fun to hear about other people enjoying these cars as much as I do mine. They definitely aren't just "big heavy muscle cars" in the handling department like a lot of people think they are.
I have the same Volvo power steering pump on my Honda, but it’s connected directly from the battery to the fuse box. Do I need the controller?
That depends on what you are using the car for. Without the controller the pump is not running at full power which from my experience is perfectly fine for a street car but becomes a problem for drifting/autocross.
@ I’m driving on the street and I’m doing Rod racing. What do you think? Is it OK to be connected directly from the battery to the fuse box or do I need the controller?
That setup is ok as long as you are happy with the way it performs. It is mainly a problem when you do many rapid steering inputs in a short amount of time. If it feels like the pump doesn't have enough power to keep up with your steering inputs then a controller would help fix that.
@@shortgirllongcar thank you very much. I really appreciate your advice. I just wanna make sure I’m not gonna overload the main relay or any fuse.
Oh sorry I think I misunderstood what you were asking. I would recommend setting it up like I have in the video going from the battery to a seperate 80A fuse unless you know for sure what you are tapping into can handle that
You ever think about putting a Watts rear suspension setup on it
Since the rear of the car feels pretty good already and it doesn't have a ton of suspension travel to make the Watts link really pay off we currently don't have any plans to try that out
I love all the tech talk in these videos. Please keep making stuff like this
any particular year or model Volvo you would recommend. Also what did you use for an 80A fuse. Great video!
There's a pretty big range in models and years of Volvos that should have the same exact pump. These include the 2005-2011 Volvo V50 , 2004-2011 S40, 2006-2013 C70, and 2007-2013 C30 so any of those should work. For the fuse I used an ANL fuse and fuse block from Blue Sea
@@shortgirllongcar great thanks!
So badass!! About to start ordering some drift parts for my turbo fbody. Lets hope i can turn it down enough starting out to learn with.
Would definitely invest an accu-sump and/or oil pan baffle. On those hard transitions and get a lot of oil slosh and It can starve the engine
The car already has the Improved Racing oil pan baffle but I have been thinking about getting an accusump for it to be on the safe side, especially if I see any signs of oil starvation when we open up the engine again
you sound just like Pam from the Office!!!
I just started rewatching The Office last week so that comment could not have come at a better time lol
you having any issues not using a power steering cooler? I wonder if using the code prevents overhearint too.
I do actually have a power steering cooler on it (you can see it at 5:50 in the video) although it is pretty small. However I haven't seen the fluid boil over or anything like that with the Volvo pump even after drifting all day. Since I run the pump at 100% speed all the time with the controller that wouldn't help with overheating but it seems to be ok so far regardless
@@shortgirllongcarYeah I don’t know why I thought running a higher capacity would help it with overheating LOL I just see a lot of people talk about cooking the pump. I don’t wanna do that to mine I have a cooler I was thinking about deleting it As I reassemble my car. Nice video by the way thank you for sharing
These dont all come with oil baffles in oil pan? I have 97 lt1 does anyone know if stock pan does
Fellow 98' Camaro SS enjoyer here, I absolutely loved this video! This platform seems very underrated for drifting. Please keep the content coming!
Excellent video, I'm thinking about building a 3rd gen drift Camaro and this was very informative.
Hi there, you think this will work with Opel PAS as well? They look the same, same cables etc? I really don't know anything about CAN etc, thats why I ask :) Thanks in advance!
I'm not super familiar with the Opel pump but from the brief bit of research I did online it looks like you don't need a CAN signal at all for that one
Nice car!
Its so awesome seeing a catfish get sideways in the current year
How do you not have a ton of subscribers??? The narration, video editing, CAD and explanation??? Top notch!
thankful for this video currently building a 97 camaro with 5.3 and want to slide it so much useful info!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Hello! Congratulations! Your entire creation is excellent. Have you thought about implementing your Arduino project with a speed sensor? Automatically changing the rotation speed of the pump as the car speed decreases.. Do you always keep the RPM of the power steering pump constant with the potentiometer? Do you think it is better to "harden" the steering at high speeds and make it "soft" at lower speeds? Thanks, I await your news and greetings from Rome!😊😊
Hi, glad you liked the video! In this setup I described in the video I do keep the pump speed constant according to whatever the potentiometer is turned to. It would be pretty easy from a coding perspective to add in another speed factor to it. However for drifting this could cause problems as you need all the power the pump can give you no matter what speed your car or the wheels are going. So while it's not something I will probably pursue it could be a cool continuation of this project for someone else to take on.
What wheels are you running?
I have Kansei KNPs. You can check out my drift setup guide video for the sizes and offsets I have
Great video, I'm doing something similar.. One question, what power steering fluid did you use??
Thanks, I've been using Redline D4 ATF in it
I want 1 of those kits for my camaro, how do I buy 1.
The link to our store is in the video description or if you search Octopus Autosport on Google it should come up. Our full angle kit is currently out of stock but we should have more ready to sell by next week.
the price for those lifters is crazy! Should have been less than half that cost. And jmo I think you need some oil control meaning with the G forces you are seeing you are most likely uncovering your pickup in the sump. Think about getting an accusump. Canton or Moroso etc
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. I've heard you want to get the genuine GM LS7 lifters hence the price but looks like that didn't make a difference anyway lol. I'm planning on switching to solid roller lifters since I have to maintain the car so much anyway to hopefully be done with lifter problems. I have oil pan baffles in the car and have never seen oil pressure drop but the last track did have a lot more elevation change than the car has seen before. If I see any signs of oil starvation during the engine teardown I'm definitely investing in an accusump.
@@shortgirllongcarI have LS7 lifters from BTR and i paid 140 a few years ago. Just an FYI. Solids on a hydraulic roller would work fine. You drive incredibly. Keep up the good work
BEAUTIFUL car! I'm biased but still, it's beautiful, keep it!!
Freaking Awesome🔥🔥
Great video and thank you for making this! Can you confirm that the M16 is the fitting on the rack for the high pressure side line and not an M18? I have the same rack.
Thanks! I made a mistake in the video and switched the fitting sizes for those. It should be M18 for the high pressure (bottom port) and M16 for the return line (top port). I put this and other corrections in the description of the video so make sure to check that out if you plan on trying this on your own car. Hope this helps!
@@shortgirllongcar Perfect! Thanks again!
Great channel name! Subbed for more drift content
Are these expensive I kinda want one 😂
Manual LS1 cars aren't the cheapest, I usually see them start around $8k these days. But the earlier LT1 cars are an option or even a V6 car might work for a low budget drift car
Great video watching from Turkey 👏👏
Hello from Sweden
WAKE UP, MICHAELA UPLOADED A NEW VIDEO!
Love your Camaro and all the improvements you did to make it a really awesome drift machine! Cheer up, you'll soon leave it spotless!
Nice video! Im doing this to my volvo 740. I was wondering do you have the stl file for the box that you put the arduino in perchance? Im completely new to cad and don't know what im doing, so the file would be of huge help :)
I still have the STLs for the box but I will say I am also a CAD novice and it's pretty janky. I can send them to you if you send me an email but personally I would recommend only using them as a reference if anything
Have you had any alignmnent issues since installing these control arms on the car since these cars are known to messing in there alignment due to the adjustment being a slide style and not a cam lobe style for the front suspension
We used to have this issue but don't with the current setup. When I had the Spohn lower control arms with metal sleeve spacers we would find those bolts slightly loose after drift events. Back then we welded washers to the subframe to keep them from moving around in the slots. We now have machined misalignment spacers and torque the bolts to 100 ft/lbs. Haven't seen them come loose with that setup even after several drift events.
@@shortgirllongcar and Ford this come included with the steering angle kit or is it something one would have to get from another source and if so what place would you get it from
We include misalignment spacers with our lower control arms. We could also sell the spacers separately if you are interested
@@shortgirllongcar highly and all of this is located on your website correct
Yes, we just added a listing for the spacers on our website so they can be purchased separately. We would be happy to add any other items people want to purchase separately on the site as well.
awesome video i am hoping to drift my v6 at some point. what lug nuts do you use?
Thanks! The lug nuts are nothing special, I think the brand was Circuit Performance off Amazon. They've held up decently though and were open ended which I needed for the ARP wheel studs
@@shortgirllongcar follow up question. Do you plan on releasing the coil over conversation plate?
We will probably make a production version sometime in the future but it would be next year at the earliest. If you are interested in one before then you can feel free to message me and we can discuss it further
My daughter had an 01 ss, was recently stolen by street take over thieves, and wrecked. I bought that car new hahaha. Couldnt find another 01, original owner car with less then 55k on odo for under 20k haha. She couldn't afford a 2015 z28 that came up for sale. However she was able to buu a base model 6cyl, 2015 camaro original owner, stick shift not auto, with very high miles habahaha. Shes gotten zl1 and z28 body knock off parts, 6pt cadillac front brakes, dual 4pt rears L and R rear brakes. Its sitting with a few pieces of pvc for mock for interior cage shes going to tuck some parts as out of way as possible. Heart is a yanked 6.2L hellcat redeye motor. Custom dash cluster that loads a hellcat style banner she made on photoshop. Bride japanese seats. Shift knob from my wifes silvia s15 spec r, a titanium nismo knob. Everythings mocked or sitting. She hasnt drawn/designed her wheels yet. She is wrapping up a cummins swap nomad wagon that will haul her small rennovated airstream bambi, yamaha r1 or sportster to events.
Sorry to hear about the SS but at least it sounds like that led your daughter to take on a very unique project. Always nice to hear about other girls out there getting it done
🙏🏼🙏🏼
Thanks,
YES omg
Amazing and thank you! I really appreciate you sharing anything Camaro related :)
Glad you liked it :) Hoping to keep the Camaro content coming
much respect!
$4k lol. I can't even find a rust bucket lt1 that runs for less than $5k
It was a hot deal even for back then. I'm glad I jumped on it when I did
What kind of power steering pump did you use?
It is an electric power steering pump out of a Volvo. If you want to learn more the other video on this channel covers it in a lot more detail
As a Kenny slides fan also building a firebird for drifting I’m glad someone also took the leap and is using the f body’s platform for drifting
I have an 01 trans am and am thinking about making a drift car after seeing kenny slides.
Building a road car out of a '96 z28 convert, 383 (525 FW/HP) , working on suspension now, thanks for the video, learning quite bit...
I'd love to hear what suspension ideas you're considering if you're going for grip.
Wow. First of all you deserve more views, great vid. Second, when you talk about the car being a bit sketchy on the highway, is it a big difference from stock? Like, is it still drivable on the street? I am planning on keeping my car as a daily and still be able to use it at track events.
Thank you! It is a pretty big difference from stock, I would say it's doable but takes more mental energy to drive with how quick the steering is. If you are worried about this you could consider doing the "medium" angle setting. This will make the car drive much more like stock while still having enough steering angle to have fun with.
Look into umis road race and auto x coilovers they have a 600lb 200lb set and a 850 275lb set
Seems like a good bolt-in option to get more reasonable springrates. However we like that how you can adjust ride height and spring preload separately with the BCs along with them having more springrate options
