    I am going to see a doctor about the biotech classes. My vision is calculated at 20-400. However I was told that once you get up fairly high they just take you all the way to 2400. I have lavers hereditary optic neuropathy is it possible I could🎉 be 20-150 or 20-200?

    I was diagnosed with Stargardt's disease when I was in the army at age 25. It is now to the point to where I can no longer drive as objects disappear in my vision. Recently I had to have an injection because one of the abnormal blood vessels that Stargardt's helps produce was bleeding into my retina. I can no longer make out faces as peoples forhead goes down to their cin now until I am up close. I was f ortunately that my employer values me enough to let me work from home but I have to use a very large tv in order to be able to do my job.

    I was diagnosed with stargardt’s back in 1986 at Walter Reed Medical Center and subsequently discharged without a disability because it was genetic (although In ave found out the military has given disabilities to people with Macular Degeneration) enough of that. I am not at the point where for the last 3 years they have been unable to correct my vision so everything is blurred and I ended up having to voluntarily give up driving beause things disappear in my vision. I would love to find out if there is genetic therapy in the works to help correct this.

    I was diagnosed with stargardts when i turned 40. After doing the genetic testing they found that my abca4 is not the problem. Fast forward to now 4 years later and my central vision has drastically deteriorated to the point that I can no longer see faces clearly since i have blind spots in my central vision, driving is out, night or low light vision is horrible and bright sunlight hurts so I always need to wear dark sunglasses whenever i am outside. This disease has killed my way of life due to the things i used to do well i can no longer do anymore and am now having to adjust my entire life around this disease. I hope that some day soon science and technology can come up with a work around to this problem. I never thought I would go blind at 40.

    Dr Stamm is making it sound like Best Disease is no big deal and doesn't affect the patient mich. I disagree. Bests has affected me significantly since a young age. For about 2 years from the age of 11 I had ongoing double vision. I pretty much faked my way though education, being unable to read blackboards, whiteboards, or books. I stopped driving at the age of 30 because I knew I wasn't safe on the roads. These days I have a wide variety of visual aids to help me manage day-to-day life as best I can. I decided many years ago not to have children because I didn't want to be responsible for burdening anyone else with this condition. I have suffered with ongoing mental health problems since the age of 11, which I believe primarily stem from Bests. Having this condition affects my life in every way. For someone - even a doctor - to imply that having this is no big deal, is both insensitive and insulting. Also, to imply that a distance visual test, sich as Snellen, is the sole defining factor of how severe someone's sight problems are, or to what extent their life is affected, is completely ridiculous.

    • @CherylMarie
      @CherylMarie 5 місяців тому

      Thanks for sharing, for what it’s worth, it’s good to know I’m not alone with some of these frustrations. I’ve never wanted children, but I feel that even if I did, it would not be fair to potentially pass down this disease to someone. I’m 29 and was just denied a driver’s license renewal because I cannot pass the vision test even with the lenses I have. It’s scary to think of how much worse it could get over a lifetime. I agree the doctor was far too lighthearted about this topic.

    I have Best. It's progressive for some people. I'm in stage 5. Visual acuity is 20/400. Central vision loss due to retinal scarring. I'm now 66. The title of the video says "juvenile" macular degeneration. My doctors haven't identified Best as related only to young people. The genetic condition is the same from birth to old age. Some people never experience symptoms and others have symptoms arrive at any age. It doesn't seem correct to label Best as a "juvenal" disease that doesn't progress beyond 20/125? I'm not a doctor, but the distinctions made in this video are not what my doctors told me.

    Here here, i love this mission, because it's totally true, not enough people and/or professionals are aware of the plethora of devices, technologies, and services that are available to help visually impaired individuals and that's quite sad. My goal is to help with this mission, i believe it is crucial for this information to be spread to every corner of the earth.

      @Anubhav Dash I have it. It's not bad, especially with the technology available nowadays :)

    • @Sapphireia
      @Sapphireia 2 роки тому

      @Anubhav Dash I started getting symptoms like three years ago (I'm 28). I get blinded more easily than others and can struggle to read sth if the contrast between text and background is low. It's not bad though, the only time it affects me is in class (to see the white board) and when ordering starbucks lol (to see the menu up behind the counter). I'm doing my masters and it's no problem, I just make sure to always sit in the front row to properly see the white board. And if I don't see I just pull up my phone camera and zoom. My mum has a bad case, she can't drive or read really. She can read with a magnifying glass. But she works as a doctor and it's fine. She just has some software on her computer that allows her to zoom in easily and that has an automatic voice that can read the text on the screen for her if necessary. She also has some glasses that magnify that she uses when watching TV for example. I wouldn't worry if I were you! If my mum, with her really bad case, could make it through med school before smartphones and laptops were a thing and work a whole lifetime as a doctor. I'm sure you can accomplish whatever you want :) and you might not even get any noticeable symptoms at all, like your dad!

    • @Sapphireia
      @Sapphireia 2 роки тому

      @Anubhav Dash No problem! Also reassuring for me to know I'm not alone :)

    • @Sapphireia
      @Sapphireia 2 роки тому

      @Anubhav Dash 1. With glasses. I have around - 1.5 on both eyes. Not sure if that's related to the eye disorder tho, I'm just slightly nearsighted. 2. Yeah no problem. Basically the only way it affects my life is that I have to sit a bit closer whenever there's a white board (and the starbucks thing). That's it. Usually it doesn't affect my day at all. 3. No idea unfortunately, haven't taken a test like that in years.

      I am 38, first clear symptoms of Best came a year ago, near perfect vision until then. Still between 20/20 to 20/25 vision in both eyes. With Best disease it's the luck of the draw, you might get a mild form or a more aggressive one. I take AREDS2 vitamins like those taken for macular degeneration, so far things are OK-ish.
