Bob Gibson says he taught Carlton the slider.
@@mitchrc3 that’s not really true. He played around with it a bit before using it in Japan. Gibson taught him mound presence by watching. I never heard him say Gibson taught him that. Gibby had elbow issues and Lefty didn’t want that to happen. So he developed his own. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching.
My favorite pitcher from my favorite team. What more can I ask for?
Phillies greatest pitcher of all times
One of the best
Super video. wish the background music could be muted. We're looking at Lefty here.
At 4:08 he strikes out Denny McLain in the 68 World Series, and McCarver flips the ball to McLain, knowing he is the 3rd out, and going out to pitch the next inning. Never seen that before. Im guessing that was Game 6,
Good eye!
He was the greatest!
Looks more like a hard curve.
Filthy…that pitch was so good it was bad…pure artistry
One of the greatest. St.Louis did bad by trading him
Pirate hall of famer Willie Stargell put it best about trying to hit Steve Carlton's slider when he said "Its like trying to drink coffee with a fork."
Well put!
Won 3 World Series Rings with 3 different teams: 1967 - St. Louis Cardinals 1980 - Philadelphia Phillies 1987 - Minnesota Twins
"Lefty" was always a Greatest Sports Legend.
On Letterman...I'm not an athlete, I'm a ballplayer...😊
I fell in love with KRUK his first at bat for the Phillies. I don't know what he said getting into the batters box. But the catcher And umpire both busting up laughing. And I knew he was going to be fun to watch. Some players just have it they play hard and they make us laugh and love them more. He was made to play in Philly and we will always always love him
Steve Carlton slider was the unhittable pitch
My favorite pitcher as a kid and still is.
And to think when he was going into The Hall of Fame, Carlton told the HOF his speech would say you know America is screwed up when your First Lady is a lesbian (Hillary Clinton). They told Steve to clean it up or no award. He gave one of the classiest speeches ever.
Trying to hit it was like drinking coffee with a fork!
Pitching 🤔 one problem..... I've never pitched before?
He had a underatted fastball as well
"The heart of the plate belongs to the hitter and that's the way it should be" What a great point of view on pitching. Thank you Steve.
Lefty wasn't strange he was well ahead of the rest of us.
Willie Stargel once said "Trying to hit Steve Carlton's slider is like trying to eat soup with a fork".
one of my all time favs lefty calrton
He makes the hitters look so bad it’s incredible.
A nun, sister Barbara, Asked him for his autograph for me, a big Phillies fan . He said no. He Must be a Protestant
If the Phillies had been halfway decent in 1972, Carlton would have been a 30 game winner and he, not Denny McLain, would hold the distinction of being the last pitcher to ever do so.
The biggest thing I notice is that almost all of the hitters were righties.
Impressive ball flip by the catcher at 4:20
Thank you Mr. Carlton for all the wonderful years you’ve spent here in Philly !!! Great memories at the Vet in the 70’s and 80’s !!!
they do not make them like that anymore. pitch count my butt
Harry’s voice hit me like a septa bus....take me back.
John Kruk's statement at 7:40 in this video contains the greatest words ever uttered in Philadelphia sports history. That sentence says more about Philadelphia and the Phillies than anything else ever spoken. True that! God bless him and the Phillies.
I did read somewhere that Mr. Carlton stated that he stuffed cotton in his ears to drown out the noise during the 1980 World Series. And our ace was totally exceptional !!!

Being from Philly , I remember Carlton and his tenure with the Phillies very well. And I thought it was terrible how the press tagged him after he stopped talking to them. They tagged him as weird because he followed his Eastern Philosophy beliefs. But it obviously paid off for him. Congrats Steve Carlton on your HOF merits and all those wonderful years !!!
This was mentioned on the broadcast tonight about his line “players and media say it’s tough to play in Philadelphia, to them I say you didn’t have the guts to succeed” Total Philadelphia fan pandering, but boy I’m emotional over here all the same. We’re a tortured fan base and can be tough but we certainly take care of our own.
Best Pitcher in Phillies History and one of the best EVER. Philly loves Lefty
Steve's religious beliefs reminds me of Elvis Presley's religious beliefs. Interesting
Lefty
Randy Johnson called his slider Mr. Snappy.
Carlton was not a lunkhead. The Cardinals were the lunkhead or for better choice of words Dumbass. Rick Wise please. Gibby, Lefty, and Jerry Reuss as well. Could have had 70s wrapped around their fingers. Instead Philly and Dodgers did .
Look at the great hitters he make look silly in this video. Andre Dawson, Dave Parker, Tommy Herr, Sadaharu Oh, absolutely amazing pitcher. Sad how his career ended.
Carlton was the best pitcher I have ever seen. Watched many games as a kid and I would copycat all his pitches playing wiffleball even that crazy slider
As a cardinal fan I still can’t believe we let him go for peanuts or Mr Wise
Worse Trade Ever, for the Cardinals! Responsible for 45% of the entire Phillies teams win total in 1972!
The most dominating pitcher I have EVER seen. My Pirates would roll into Philly for a four-game weekend series. They had 6 or 8 guys in the NL top ten hitting for average. GREAT hitters and a hitting machine team...Then the Phils would trot out Lefty on Sunday game and make these future Hall of Farmers look stupid. Absolutely STUPID. When he has his stuff he was the best. EVER.
Not only did Steve put up big numbers as an HOF pitcher, but those numbers pale in comparison to the numbers on the Phillies uniforms!
❤️ steve carlton mr slider unhittable pitch
