Vintage Snowmobile Electric Conversion! Part 3: Restoration
There is some magic in the act of restoration.
You take something that starts off as old, rusty, broken.
You take it apart, and look at it closely.
You try to, as Rick Ruben puts it,
"see past the ordinary and mundane and get to what might otherwise be invisible."
You remove what isn't necessary, and you give it what is missing.
And you wash, scrub, mend, massage, and put it back together
With love, and care, and elbow grease,
And then, it becomes something new, useful, beautiful.
It has new life. It is restored.
And make sure you use a lot of elbow grease.
Like, A LOT.
Like get it all over everything and make a BIG. GREASY. MESS.

This is part three of a series. In this episode, I will be restoring the back half of the snowmobile including the track, suspension, bogey wheels and axles, and then reassembling everything and testing it out with the electric motor!
The sled is a 1974 Mercury 440 M/X found in a scrap yard.
Stay tuned for part four! In the next episode I will take it for a longer, proper test ride, document some stats, and start thinking about further improvements.
Don't forget to like, comment and subscribe. Thanks for watching!

Watch me Demo a Plaster Wall
Переглядів 5 тис.2 роки тому
In case you were ever wondering how to *carefully* remove a lathe and plaster wall from an older house. (Note that no sledgehammers or chainsaws appear in this video) Removing interior walls is one of the most impactful things you can to when renovating your home. Just be sure you understand the structure of your house and don't remove anything load-bearing. If you aren't sure, talk to a profes...
Electric Boat Conversion

For anyone who wonders what I do for a living, this is it. Special thanks to my "Hammer Brother" Jay for always inspiring me, and giving me the confidence, complete trust, and agency to dream big, work hard, and achieve great things. Triangles
Переглядів 1009 років тому
Triangles are multifunctional modular pieces that can be playfully reinterpreted to a range of uses. Heavy duty triangular objects made from reclaimed decking material from job sites, mostly under 2ft cut-offs, can be used outdoor/indoor for patio furniture, step stools, planters, children’s play structures and more. Thanks to artists participating in the Tiny Treehouse workshop at Articulation...
Nice work
Epic! I've got a couple old dead sleds that I would love to do this to. Any updates? How is the range and speed? How long does it take to get a full charge on your batteries? Thanks! Z
were you not concerned about asbestos/lead? no negative pressure?
Good idea 👍
Amazing you did what I wanted/will do 👌
Thank you! I Will be posting part 4 soon, to talk about some of the performance results, and improvements/upgrades to be made. Good luck with your build!
SOOoooo. It's been a couple weeks. What are you seeing for range, speed, any issues. Have you freighted a dog sled and taken the electric sled ice fishing yet? I want to start a electric sled project. I would love any feedback.
Thanks for the comment! The short answer is the motor is fairly undersized for this build (obviously!) And the gear ratio makes it go pretty slow. I'd like to upgrade the motor and batteries in the near future, and I'll also be posting a part 4 with more details on my test results. Haven't taken it ice fishing yet (but hopefully soon!) But I have taken my kids around on it and they LOVE it. Thanks for watching and good luck with your build!
nice work! im stoked this is working!
Thanks! The best part is testing it out with my kids.. My 3-year old loves it!! Lots more improvements to come, I hope to post part 4 soon!
This is inspiring especially for the great White North! How did you learn how this works😊 how to take this complex puzzle apart, restore it and put it back together, piece
by piece. KEEP GOING MIKE.! ❤❤❤
Thank you for the kind words! I knew very little about how snowmobiles worked before starting this project. But I do know a lot about bicycles, motorcycles and boats, and a snowmobile is kind of like a combination of all these things. I also know a fair bit about small engines, and have taken apart (and put back together) a good number of machines in my life. I was actually able to find the original service manual from 1974 (50 years ago!) online, on a site called vintagesled.com . This gave me a lot of info on where and how to start taking it apart, what all the parts were called, and from there it was just a matter of observing the puzzle and learning as I go. As you can probably tell, I get tremendous joy from working on complex mechanical puzzles like this. Particularly when they are old and rusty ♥
So impressive. Great video ! Can't wait to try it!❤ by pieco
Just wanted to add to the conversation. It is a really fun project for me and the kids to be witness to. We all have huge smiles. There's so much to learn from and be inspired by. I love seeing old things that might seem like "junk" take on a new life and bring joy. It's amazing to see the evolution of the project, from being a boat motar in the summer to snowmobile in the winter time. It encompasses so much of our values and philosophy. In particular it highlights the importance to be creative right now, as the world shifts from fossil fuels to green energy we need to be resourceful and appreciate what is available... and not just by brand new all the time. (Not sure if thile kids realize how on the cusp we are... while there are cars and bikes being turned into e-cars and e-bikes, it is so rare to see boats or snowmobiles powered by electricity (solar). I'm happy to see so many people interested in this already, and hope it will inspire others to be creative and think outside the box. That's a real art.
Thank you so much for the kind words!
do you have a part 3 coming out soon?
Yes! Got slowed down a bit over the holidays but I will be releasing part 3 very soon. Keep an eye out for it!
I would love to know how far those batteries let you go. I'm gonna have to try this too!
It depends on a lot of factors but with our boat on a calm day we were able to go about 12km. Good luck with your build!
What is the shoe called, that helps to reach ceiling
Most folks call them stilts
@@Watchmikework Thanks for the reply
@@shohidurrahmanshaju5798 They have a thousand and one uses. I'll make a video about them soon!
Gas to Electric conversions for boats will be huge business opportunity in next few years. Kudos for your vision and leadership! ~tgb
Interesting. Wondering about snow/water getting sucked into the motor? A 440 2-stroke would make something like 40-60 hp. Your 3k electric is something like 4 hp wondering how it will pull that sled.
It does move the sled! (you'll see in part 3) Obviously it won't be as fast as a 60hp engine, but this is just a proof of concept.. There is plenty of room for improvement (ie a better motor) but I wanted to get a baseline prototype working before spending a ton of money. Thanks for the feedback 👍 ⚡
@@Watchmikework Don't get me wrong I like the idea. I have seen how these 72V motors can make a 125 cc dirt bike rip! Looking forward to the series actually.
This is a wicked project! nice work!
Thanks!
That's amazing Michael! I can see why you are so busy and become so immersed in a project😊😊 I look forward to going for a ride across the beautiful winter landscape in the Near North ! So in awe of your ever changing talents! ❤
Good job
GREAT JOB & Video!!! 👍👍😁😎
Wow, A special kind of stupid....going a giant step backwards from a gas outboard.
I would love to know how much your conversion cost. What did the batteries cost?
GREAT !
I so want to do this but never done anything like it . What power out put do you need ? How much does one need Got that many questions I canny think lol Awsome project well done 👍👍👍😜🏴🦕🦄😁🤞✌️
Great build and video
I wonder how long those batterries last on full throttle tho ive seen mamy stranded in the middle of lakes..
How much time you can ride with your this battery s??
Part numbers would be nice, as would a wiring diagram. Thank you for the idea
Great video I would like to do the same thing to my outboard I have the same motor .Is it possible for you to supply a parts list. Martin
these OMC 20-35hp motors are so reliable and powerful for their size i have no idea why you would want heavy batteries on board only to go far slower and have far less range?
Great video without long drawn out junk, . Looks like a thought out conversion. thanks for posting. CANADA
I used an impact socket as a coupler. I drilled it n filled it with mig weld
Good job. Beautiful family. Good luck with future projects. What are the characteristics of the motor and the controller?
This is truly beautiful how the stilts come out when the songs chorus comes in
Real cool idea man! Powdered toast man shirt great stuff right there.
Is that a grinder that your cutting the plaster wall with? Hard to see you work so fast!!!
It's a Dremel osscilating multi-tool. With a drywall cutting blade
Now all you need to add is the sound system to make loud motorboat noises! ;)
I have exactly the same motor sitting in my garage, I was wondering if it would be enough to power a boat, now I know :)
bro, nice job with the conversion! have a machine shop do the shaft connector. that thin metal sheet you're using will eventually shear off. btw, always remember to bring a paddle. just in case. 😁
06:55 WTF? it wobbles like hell. Looks like a monkey, after serious stroke built machined the parts. I do not deny the knowlegle, but skills.. poor, at best. 11:22 It floats.. fcking yey, IT'S A BOAT! Where is the bollard pull test results? Without it, content is almost useless.
Where did you get all the parts i have a non working Johnson want to do same. Thanks you
Thing that impresses me most about this build is the Powdered Toast Man t-shirt...what kind of motor did you use, & what kind of batteries are those, & what's the device it's connected through?
It says in his descript, just didnt mention the controller.
How do you put the motor in reverse? By controller or the gearbox on the outboard ?
Mate great idea to E the motor, But as you were making the drive connection I could see it was not going to be balanced, Suggestion, get the drive coupling made up by a machine shop and have it balanced, , then you will have less of an inssue in the forseable future
It’s the way to go
What sort of top speed do you get out of that?
Awesome stuff, that looks about the size outboard I want to convert as well. Battery weight will always be an issue. But I'm only In early stages of planning....
Was this all in one day??
Yep. One very dusty, dirty afternoon.
Awsome ! Are you still sastified with the result ?
Nice job 👍 I got a tr20 bass boat I'm wanting to electric power but I just can't figure out what to do. It's such I big boat I'm sure I'll need some kind of 48v motor. If anyone has any ideas please let me know thanks
It's possible! The options really depend on your budget.. check out the eTolly channel, he's got a huge, electric cabin-cruiser, powered by 48v. Lots of useful info there. Also the Sailing Uma channel has an electric sailboat that they used a 48v forklift motor to power. Super inspiring.. good luck with your project!
i'D RATHER JUMP SHOTS THEN THESE SPEED UPS, DAMN THEY GIVE ME A HEADACHE.
Nice project, is that Bonfield Ontario?
Yes indeed! Good eye 👍
