As a Swede living in Stockholm, I don't really agree with this video. In my experience the work culture is very hierarchical!
A very helpful calming video, love it, and I'm looking forward to the next one
You also pay 34% "employer fee" on your salary before you even see your salary statement. Isn't fun living in a country where everything is "free"?
Did you get the chance to drive those Scania trucks on test tracks. I heard they allow employee to drive those trucks .
Hey Vanessa, thanks again for sharing, I didn't think to use chatgpt for job searching, btw have you tried the new deep seek R1 everyone is so hyped about?😁
As a Swede I think this video is pretty spot on. Only thing I don´t find compelety accurate is that most companys I´ve worked for didn´t allowed pets in case that someone would be allergic to them. Since you show a Scania truck in the intro I presume that´s were you work. Scania is among the best in Sweden at taking care of there employies. Not all companies are like them but most of the biggest ones are. Most companies have a pretty good balance between work and life but it´s getting more and more common that people are "working themself into the wall" here in Sweden and becoming "burned out". That´s really sad.
Pretty cool!
Former American now Swedish High School English teacher here. While the students have LESS respect for teachers in Sweden, the pay, benefits and enjoyment level of teaching here beats the conditions teachers live in, in the USA. Glad to work here, never moving back as there's 0 benefits to doing so.
"A small amount of progress is better than no progress at all" 💯
Thanks a lot for your information!
I'm going to be one in that statistic. I've decided to leave Sweden and move out in the continent; more affordability and variety, more and better career opportunities, way better salaries and generally safer.
Your experience is very Stockholm specific and looks quite different in the rest of the country. The usual (vacation, parental leave, vab, sickdays) would be the same but the rest is very "Stockholm"
Is the 1 hour of study time you do every day, part of your work hours, or are you studying also outside of work?
Sweden is not socialist, but it is a welfare state :)
If i had your desire to clean my home would look so much better, i clean only because it is needed. My home look ok, but yours look really good, i would love to have some similar level as your level of cleaning but i don't want to put in the work, hence it looks alot more like i don't want to clean.
Hi, thanks for such well described, personalized video. I just have one question, as living in Stockholm is expensive, how the employers react to multiple job in Sweden? Or, what is a software engineer freelance or do remote job of other European countries while having a job in Sweden, does the Swedish employers approve it or discourage to do that?
Hello, do you have an Instagram page? 😉
Thanks, have a great day.
My story of moving to Sweden is a bit unusual. After 50+ years in the same profession, I decided to buy part of a farm 3 hours north of Stockholm and move all my tools, equipment, books and antique Volvos to Sweden. I started my own company and I an not in full production yet, I look forward to training people in a style of log house building rarely seen in Sweden. The story of my career is far too long to share here, but I have several business ideas that for other businesses as well. I am mostly of Swedish ancestry with some Norwegian, Finnish and German thrown in. I first visited in August of 1971 and never got over it. I was 20 at the time and did not realize that Sweden was taking in any young men that did not want to go to Vietnam. I was nearly drafted twice and managed to be allowed to finish my undergraduate work in Washington State. I avoided Vietnam first by having good grades and the second time by sheer luck with a lottery number only 9 points away from going to war. I cannot tell you how glad I am to have my farm in Sweden. It must be epigenetics or or reincarnation for the comfort and belonging that I finally feel I am in the place that really suits my soul. I'm 74 and still going strong and I can tell you that it is never too late to have a great childhood.
thesee are great tips. thank you for advices. ı read a book named "atomic habits" maybe you did read or you heard this. if you didnt, ı recommend you. Your advices similar with in books.
There are some issues with your comparison: 1. You have lower salary but, you also don't need health insurance since healthcare is almost free, daycare is almost free, school is free, mandatory vacation, prescriptions is almost free, and so on. 2. The MacBook - remember that the prices of that mac in USA is without tax/VAT/whatever. 3. Living prices - please do not compare the central part of Stockholm with "Sweden". There is a huge difference. Just move a little bit outside of Stockholm, and then use public transport to get into the city. It works really well. I live like 50 km outside of Stockholm and can get into the center with train in 35 minutes. 4. Weather: Well, there is no such thing as bad weather - only bad clothes. =) 5. Remember that not everything is totally available online. A lot of the stuff is first filtered since some things is classified so you can not get out anything. 6. Regarding the slow work progress and the meetings: This is to assure that you don't just go on gut feeling when taking a decision. Like top down, then you can have a stupid boss that just does what he/she wants. Yes, sometimes things are a bit too slow, but as said, it also is some sort of protection for stupid decisions.
The MacBook price comparison is not accurate as the US price doesn't include sales taxes (which are added at checkout).
what a boring typical american. Only money in the head. I guess thats the result coming from a very superficial culture, no depth.
As software engineer you can find job anywhere in the world, why choose this cold country instead of a Warm climate??
Thanks for reminding me it's time for my afternoon coffee!
Swedes might value your perspective, but they may not always appreciate such direct honesty. Swedes are very "political correct". I was born and raised in Sweden and have worked in the US, Sweden, Denmark, and Poland. If I were to rank the countries I've worked in, it would be: Denmark, Poland, Sweden, and the US.
im sorry but this video is super robotic and weird. legit makes me think you're an AI.
Australia is the place to be... I lived in sweden as well and moved to Sydney and its amazing. Good money, great taxes and the weather is amazing
Thanks for sharing your story! As an introvert, I think that's very brave of you. I'm glad you made it through and you managed to move to Sweden. I went through a similar journey and ended up in Sweden as well!
0:37 did you try chatGpt 4o which has better benchmark score compared to claude sonnet ?
06:10 i heard that his new book "Nexus" is also great, highly recommend it
"Just do it" is definitely a great item to hold to. Sometimes it is very much about putting one foot in front of the other and before you know you're where you need to be going.
Good stuff! Just be careful with the Raspberry Pi home server. make sure it's configured correct so you don't let random people hit your home network lol
Estimating is always bullshit. Maybe some people can code the solution in their head when looking at a ticket and immediately figure out how long it'll take but I cannot lol.
You are like a female version of me lol.

Hey Vanessa! I am Hungarian and I'm really glad that you considered moving to Budapest, Hungary. ❤ In my opinion Budapest has a really good infrastructure for the current amount of people who reside in the city, which is around 1.7 million right now. And I think that the city is capable of functioning properly - there are not many traffic jams, there are no difficulties when they orgenize their yearly events, etc. Like it is actually worth evaluating this thing 😅 because all the bridges are essential in the day-to-day life of the citizens of Budapest and these events require a lot of planning. However, from my experience the city's leadership fulfills the needs of the people who are living in the city, so you shouldn't worry about this. Or at least that's what I have seen. 👀😅 I'm not living in Budapest, but my aunt lives there and I visit her every couple of months. Also I similarly thought of moving to Budapest in the following year and I spent some time researching the potential districts where I could imagine living and there seemed to be a lot of options to choose from so I can only encourage you to move there 😊 I hope there won't be difficulties in the process and I wish you a good time! Bye! 👋
Love the video ❤
JUST DO IT AND GET IT DONE. Thats my daily moto, I made a big poster with big red letters and put it on the wall next to the door so I see that constantly.
One hack for the darkness is lunch walks in the daylight. Maybe play the game when it is dark outside to make time for the walk?
Hey Vanessa, a great video! You should try working out at home. It's actually much easier to stay consistent when you don't fee like going to the gym, because you don't have to go anywhere, haha. And it's also a great time saver, you'd be able to spend that commute time working on your personal projects. Pick a body-weight strength training routine on UA-cam you like, maybe get yourself a few rubber bands, and that should be enough for a great full-body workout.
Thank you for these thoughtful suggestions! You make great points about the convenience and time-saving benefits - I could definitely use more time to code haha. This would definitely be good for the days when the weather is terrible! 😆
I would do modeling with that face aesthetics you have. Not coding 😆
Your videos are so very likeable. Thought provoking, very reflective. It is such valuable time. And, almost all locations have something endearing so.. though it will be a loss for Sweden and a win for where you go.

I think she really nails the Scandinavian weather for immigrants. It's not the cold. The cold is fine. You get winter clothes, gloves, a toque, a space heater for when it's bad, it's fine. You acclimatize to the cold. You don't acclimatize to the snow and ice, though, even as a native. Or the dark. Snow and ice look nice, and actually helps with the dark, but they fug everything up. Sidewalks gets narrower and narrower as it piles up along. Snow clumps freeze over and form slippery, uneven foothills, like a frozen heatmap. Public transport slows to a crawl and becomes entirely unreliable. Every building gets a coating of snow covered by another coating or grey road dust, and the with the pale light turns even specatular cities into the worst renditions of communist-era eastern bloc architechture. Grey, grey, grey. Going outside becomes a chore you minimize. And so you don't get any sun. Which just makes everything worse.
Our brain is know nothing about motivation. The brain saves energy on everything and is ready to spend it only on satisfying basic needs, but it can be deceived. So this is a short advise on how to accomplish a feat: 1. Create an informational dominant or lets say - focus (start reading, watching videos, researching information). 2. Inventory the current situation (it's difficult or even impossible to do this alone; ask others for feedback, have them tell you what you can do, what you have, and where your strengths lie). 3. Begin. The main point here is to have a clear view and an informational dominant in the brain before starting any action, in this case the brain will be the best assistant and will not resist.

Thanks for sharing your story! It's nice seeing someone who is intelligent and classy making videos as opposed to egomaniacs who want attention and try to get it by being artificially extreme with everything they do. I'm also a non-tech degreed person who has been a front-end developer for 15-ish years. I could go on, but I'll end by saying thank you again, and I look forward to your future videos.
please don't, the cost of living is small only if you are on western salary, but it's really expensive for locals, an average apartment already costs half of the average salary in the city without any bills.
