Solar Panel Array wiring in series, parallel, or both?

Confused on how to wire your array? Does the math seem confusing. Just let ChatGPT do the math for you. Just tell ChatGPT what panels you have by brand and the solar generator its going into & it will configure for you. This array is panel 1 & 2 connected in series. Panel 3 & 4 connected in series. (1-2) connected in parallel to (3-4). Panel 5 connected in parallel to (1,2,3,4).

I think your panels are too close to each other. if they shade the panel behind it, your power production will drop drastically....Try removing the front legs and let the skid tilt at an angle to try to get rid of that tight solar surface. you dont want any shade on those panels.

what are you powering with your limited battery bank? that's your weakest link right now. is it really only 2 kilowatt hours? or the 10% - 90% ? and its low voltage input limitation is holding your panels under water. the solar panels and the entire system works better with higher voltage. if electrons are like water, then Voltage is the pressure, and the Amperage is the flow. Volts X Amps = Watts., . , ,, watters flow low voltage requires more amps so you need much thicker wire, you're also getting more HEAT which is hard on the circuit boards. i advise you to go back to the drawing board and set up a 48v battery, inverter, MPPT charger(Maximum Power Point Tracking) if you plan to do more than charging phones and led lights, get a battery that has at least 10 kilowatt hours, 48 volts. like Eve 280 amp hour Lithium Iron Phosphate prismatic cells. then you can get back to optimizing the solar panels after

here is another tidbit of information: Voltage is pushed from the source (potential, pressure) and you don't want to exceed the capacity of the load device (charge controller) Current (amps) is pulled from the load (draw) and you don't want to exceed the capacity of the source or the connections. Power will be limited by the charge controller, and you'll have the 500 watts longer through the day, and for some cloudy conditions (shading) with the little extra solar panel capability that you installed.

@@larvae91 take that fifth one in and out of service and I doubt that it is contributing much. I'll use a round number - Open Circuit Voltage may be measurable but it is theoretical under real-life load. 20v + 20v in series = 40 volts. Then you are putting a 20volt device in parallel with that - under some conditions (called a network) that could actually bring the voltage _down_ between 20 and 40. I am not saying that is what is happening here. But best practice would indicate keeping the fifth panel out of service as a spare, or use it to keep a vehicle battery charged. Or run some gazebo lighting. the 2 in series and the two pairs in parallel is perfectly comfortable. have fun!

@@larvae91 If I recall, you have a small wire size, and putting them in series/parallel (40v) cuts the voltage drop down more than half. My guess is that 5 in parallel won't quite do as well at 20v. But it will take testing to be sure.

Oh. You asked. The series array helps to mitigate the voltage drop problem due to wire run distance. You don't state the wire size. Southwire has a nice voltage drop calculator online. But you mainly need to know the Open Circuit Voltage (OCV) of each solar panel, and the maximum input voltage of the controller or battery 'generator'. With the 4 panel array, I will guess at 20v OCV and lets guess at 150 volt max input. 20x4 = 80 volts, and will work well. The increase in power available will be measurable (~25% ?) You will just do away with the 'Y' adapters and daisy chain the panels. The difficulty is that the two arrays need to be the same voltage to parallel them, So the least common denominator is 2 panels in series for 40 volts, and parallel all of the pairs. (or add two panels on the ground array 😝) thanks for the video!

@@larvae91 Tread carefully. I am not certain what the specifications are on the solar panels you have. What I see now means the ground array can be 2 series pairs in parallel. You _may_ be able to connect 3 panels in series and connect two of those sets together in parallel on the pergola. But it might be close. 3 series pairs in parallel seems to be safe. Enjoy! Delta 2 Solar Charging 11-60V *FAQ* Can I connect solar panels in series / parallel? 1. Up to 2 sets of 110W EcoFlow solar panels can be connected in parallel. Series connection is not supported. For parallel connection, you need to buy the Solar Parallel Connection Cable separately. 2. Third-party solar panels of the same wattage lower than 110W, 10-25V input, and DC 10A max current can be connected in parallel. According to the specifications, they may be able to support both parallel connection and series connection. However, we don’t recommend that you connect solar panels of different wattages at the same time.
