Episode 93: The Future of User Research
In this conversation, I cover:
- The shift towards democratizing tasks like usability testing and surveys, and how AI might take over repetitive research processes
- Moving away from evaluative tasks and stepping into more strategic roles that involve partnering with businesses to shape long-term goals
- Focusing on uncovering unknown unknowns through generative research to find innovative solutions and disrupt existing market spaces
- The importance of not just responding to requests but proactively identifying research opportunities that can drive business growth
- Helping teams, especially in low-maturity environments, understand and incorporate user research into strategic business decisions
- How user researchers can assist companies in anticipating future trends and unmet needs, rather than simply improving existing processes
Some takeaways:
- With AI and automation, tasks like usability testing will increasingly be democratized within teams or handled by AI, allowing researchers to focus on higher-level strategic work
- User researchers need to evolve into thought partners, working closely with business teams to guide strategy and innovation
- Instead of just enhancing existing products, researchers should focus on uncovering unmet needs and unknown unknowns that can lead to disruptive innovations
- By conducting generative research, researchers can identify new opportunities and adjacent markets that companies haven’t considered yet
- Researchers should move towards proactive research, driving the exploration of new ideas and strategies rather than waiting for stakeholders to bring them projects

Thanks Nikki, I found this so valuable! I recently had a sync with my team to plan out our goals, activities and highest priority research work for next year and we've come up with a plan to carry out more generative and strategic research, while also creating processes and democratising access for the product managers and other "people who do research" (PWDR) in my organisation to carry out evaluative research. For instance, one thing we plan to do is to host research clinics twice monthly to hand-hold these PWDRs through any blockers they might be facing in their research. We'll also be giving them access to tools, templates and other resources. What an interesting thing to be a UX researcher!

Thats so exciting and sounds like you are doing some really great stuff to help raise the bar of UXR at your org. When it comes to the research clinics, one thing that I found and was helpful, was to actually make them super relelvant for the teams. So rather than teaching everyone the UXR basics, I actually only teach teams the methods they will be using repeatedly that help them achieve their specific goals. It keeps everything relevant and also more in scope for researchers. Let me know how it goes!

When you worked in Germany...were you doing user research for German companies? If so, did you have to have German language proficiency for your day-to-day work? If not, are there certain companies or industries that support working remotely from another country?

Hi Jared! I was in fact doing UXR for German companies...but I was based in Berlin and in Berlin many people and tech companies have English as their primary working language, which means that I conducted UXR in English. I didn't have any sort of proficiency to conduct it in German :) I'm not sure if any companies there support working from a different country as I worked in Germany during my time and didn't really look at other options

I have background in research and education with a Master in Physics, and I am pivoting into the UX field. I am currently in the process of learning about this field, and in the meantime I'm looking for a UX researcher volunteering opportunity where I can get to know the UX research community better, and gain hands on experience. I need resources for where I can find UX research volunteering or internship (w/o being enrolled in a program) opportunities . Thank you
