Enjoy new Yiddish songs by lifelong Yiddish cultural activist Linda Gritz. Since retirement in 2016 from a career in biotechnology as a molecular biologist turned medical writer, Linda has been creating original Yiddish songs and Yiddish versions of songs from other languages. She and her husband Mike Katz raised their children in Yiddish. They are active in Boston Workers Circle / Arbeter Ring, a secular progressive community rooted in radical Yiddishkayt, and sing in its Yiddish chorus A Besere Velt (A Better World).

this specific song has had a lot of controversy with themes of “manifest destiny” and all that. It’s a lot more complicated than that. Woody Guthrie was an advocate for the rights of native people but at the same time this song was taken of out context and its original theming was turned into nationalist rhetoric. I recommend listening to Keith Secola’s cover of it Ojibwa. Very interesting stuff.
I could talk about this for ages lmao let me know if you’re curious about anything and I really do recommend looking more into Daniel Kahn as well as Woody Guthrie himself. Also worth mentioning that there’s a couple Zionists on here making this song into something that it is absolutely NOT supposed to be.
I think this song lies in a general gray area between imperialism and socialism. But in this context it is meant to be progressive.
