Приєднався 13 лип 2009
Hi I'm Geert Groenewegen, I make my own surfboards from scratch. Enjoy!
Turning an old shortboard into a fish shape! | Reusing my old surfboard
In this video I'm showing my process of shaping a new board out of my most used surfboard. It's an old Rusty Piranha. I remove the polyester skin, make a new shape, glass it and surf it. Let me know what you think in the comments!

How to 3D print a surfboard with a basic 3D printer?
Переглядів 254 тис.3 місяці тому
I tried to 3D print this surfboard after I found a 3d file online. I have an old Prusa MK3 printer which I used to print the 46 files needed to complete the board. I used Recycled PETG filament. After glueing all the pieces together I laminated en hotcoated the board with epoxy. Link to 3D file: www.thingiverse.com/thing:4422731

how much vacuum do you put on in bar 0.2 or how much? build my own board atm and i have an eps core of 15kg per m3 any sugestions? greetings
I’m around minus -0.2 I believe, but as long as your vaccuumbag is tight around your foam is doesn’t really matter. It’s just to hold the carbon against the foam.
@@Dzjiefoils is it enough to pull the over amount of resin out?
@@gamma8283yes.
Where do you get you EPS or PU from in holland?
I searched for a long time on marktplaats.nl found a guy who had some EPS 200 left from his floor insulation.
I also used the foam of old windsurfboards
Good job 👍 I would recommend to use some locktide in the helicoil
Yeah that would would be even better!
very cool !!
Thanks! 🙏
Amazing! Great job! What size is the board? How long is it? 6.0' or 7.0'?
Thanks! 5.9’
It's a good thing for beginners who don't want to spend a lot for a surfboard
They can better build one with foam. Thats cheaper
But this skips the “difficult” shaping step.
What type of fiber glass did you use? thanks
Shapers composites glass 6OZ
@@Dzjiefoilsthankss!!
Cool idea. Unfortunately with warm weather it will weaken though.
Luckily, I live in the Netherlands 😂☀️🤷♂️
Decent for content. Not good for usage.
Thanks. Maybe with some tweaks it will be good for usage. But in this form you are right.
Great job! Did the sandwich foam need a lot of resin? I checked the Lantor website and they stated that the 3mm foam needs 1,4 kg per m2. That is a lot compared to what the carbon fiber needs.
I used 2mm sandwich material. I definitely didn’t use a 1.4 kg’s of epoxy, so maybe it’s under saturated, but it’s strong a.f. I just used some more epoxy than I would on a layup without sandwich stuff.
W😍W!!!
Awesome! I’ve bought some old boards from locals in my area to do the exact same thing to. Add more foam and reshape to give another life. I really enjoyed your video. You and your girlfriend are very clever. Well done. Yeow!!! From Taranaki New Zealand 🤙🏽😎🤙🏽
Nice dude! Thanks for the kind words! Good luck with your new boards! Keep up the good work
Would you recommend adding chamber holes to the print rather than melting the holes later?
Yes, I would make bigger holes in the 3D file. And print with some thicker walls.
repeat this project with a led strip inside the surf table, its will be awesome
Yeah that would be great!
just hang it on the wall before it collapses. That thing is artwork, not a performance surfboard . Looks Great!
Hehe Maybe I will. Thanks for the comment and the compliment!
Labor of love for the craft and sport. Nice one!
Thanks!
Very nice
Great job! Turned out nice!
looks good but so small for that weak wave pool that wave sucks maybe good for a log
Yeah the pool is brand new, they are still dialing in the settings of the wave. It has some potential though!
Cool build! One question though, to make the second half of the surfboard did you just mirror the files?
Yep
Hey, i like you idea to add foam. You willing to share the PU glue you got? I tried to find a two part system before but here in germany I can only find cans
U could use something like this.! www.r-g.de/en/list/PU-foams
Cooooool!
Yeahboii
I hope you are a builder by trade. You are a natural.
I’m a PE teacher 🤷♂️😉
But thanks!! 🙏
I’m no engineer but I have a few ideas to make this more feasible: The Board would be a lot more durable if you made the parts interlocking and coated the final version with glue/resin once you’re done. If you use a soluble material you could probably fuse the connections before applying the coat but I have never done that. I would add 1 metal rod going horizontally and 1 vertically through the seams (meeting each other where youd usually stand on) That would 100.000x the structural durability if done right.
Interlocking would be great indeed. Metal rods would make it too heavy, Fibreglass stringer and skin will prevent it from snapping.
Hi ...most likely the water got in because the plastic is not compatible with the resin. That's why the fabric peeled off under stress.....
👋🏻, thanks for your thoughts, but the epoxy bonds good with the PETG. So is not the case that it peeled off. I just didn’t filled this part well enough with epoxy, leaving some gaps in the epoxy coat.
Hi ...most likely the water got in because the plastic is not compatible with the resin. That's why the fabric peeled off under stress.....
Wow this is rad!
Thanks!
Came out great! Love the inlay.
Thank you sir! 👌🙏🤙
Why not fill it with spray foam?
That spoils the looks!
You need to let the vacuum pump runs 24h ?
I think you can stop at 10h or something, but epoxy isn’t even fully cured after 24h. So thats why I do it this long.
Better safe than sorry
great vid man!
Thanks! 🙏
This is a nice looking board. But why not make the "infill" a bit stronger? Is the slow speed due to the shape of the board or due to the lesser stiffness?
Slow speed is due to my 3d print skills and the low infill is due to the 3D design. I didn’t knew how to adjust this.
Coolest board i have seen ever! Wouldn't surf it, too nice!
Haha thanks! 🙏
Did you dry the petg? You could get the same results using pla+
No I didn’t dry it. In tried drying it in the oven, but it melted the whole roll..
Great little series!
Thanks!🙏
Next one you should use recycled PETG from plastic bottles! There are a few good filament makers in the DIY world :-) btw i love the Vanderwaal sticky pads! never going back to wax
This is exactly that. Recycled PETG
U’re a fucking genius man
Thanks!! 🙏
@@Dzjiefoils i would do the same but I need you help bro
@@DedeM97 just try!
@@Dzjiefoilswhere I can find the file stl for the FCS?
@@DedeM97 the file I used is in the description.
also, you could make a color pattern on each segment... that would look awesome.
Yeah! That’s a good idea!👍
you went there for the solely purpose of making it. Love the outcome. Maybe not as a main board but sometimes, someplace, its usable. if not.. great display piece.
Exactly!
MUCHAS GRACIAS POR ESTE PROYECTO, ME INSPIRA A CREAR MUCHAS MAS COSAS.
Yeah! Thanks dude! Go and create some stuff!
very nice
Thanks! Love your name by the way! 👌😉
I use Form Futura CarbonFill for most of my structural 3D prints. A little easier to print than pure PETG but way stronger and good friction surfaces for gluing. Downside, not transparent, but a very dark grey. It has printed structural parts for my bicycle, including unbreakable pannier hooks, my garmin bracket and a pair of "flat" converter plates for using with SPD clip-in pedals. Should be well up to a strong surfboard using the design you've demoed. Cool project. Also, use thermal insets for skeg screws. They push in with a soldering irn and a steady hand and bond better than screwing directly into the layers and the heatpress improves the layer bonds around the threaded insert. (localised anealing)
Also, I guessed it might be more expensive than foam core! Carbon fibre PETG would be even more expensive. Worth a try for strength, though.
Thanks for your comment! Love all the details!
And the tips.
great project, could you share some data with us: weight, rigidity, surfing feeling cpompared with a modern surfboard of similar size
Weight: too heavy: around 5kg. Surfing feeling (only 1 session in shitty waves) as I said in the video, slow, paddles easy, look amazing too look through your board and see the water. I only surf my own creations, so I’m not really aware of how modern surfboards surf. Sorry! But compared too my other boards it feels slow and heavy.
Cool stuff, and always amazed with the stuff people come up. And with some engineering materials and better Inner structures, since PETG is pretty flexible but has little impact strength it is not very well suited for the job. PC ( also available in transparent ) would be a hot candidate for such a project, but requires better printing conditions. Nevertheless, great job ! Best
Thanks for the tips dude!
Great project! Do you know how much your board weights, since that seems to be a common challenge with 3d printed boards
Thanks, its too heavy. Around 5 KG
I see the leak bubbles. You want to vent that board. It gasses.
It has a vented leash plug. And nog it has 2 holes to vent the water out. When it’s dries I’ll fill them up. And then only the leashplug remains
Gaaf project dit!
Bedankt gozur! 👌🤙
Would it be faster if u sanded the finish down super fine and put a hydrophobic layer on it. On the bottom only ofcourse. I think the finish on it right now would induce alot of drag
This is how all surfboards are finished, just sanded and polished epoxy or polyester
Ziet er goed uit goza!
Jaa lekker toch neef!
I shaped and glassed my own in the 90s. They were't great but there's something cool about surfing your own creation.
Nice! Yeah definitely a cool feeling to surf your own boards.
