DLR need to introduce a retro paint scheme on their units.
Nice! Very rare footage. Thanks for posting.
I remember the original formation and trains very well indeed. Though those inward opening doors were obviously a design blunder from day one
Is the old Eurostar flyover going back to service?
I'd shunt with Sooty anytime.
I worked with TfL, now I work with London transport museum when I heard about DLR high level at island gardens closed on 8/1/1999
I still wish Island Gardens high level was still open today... :(
I like this one train. But is a shame this train effect the way too loud of bell sounds! 😖
Great video. I lived on the Isle of Dogs between 1996 and 2003 and used the DLR nearly every day, including the original Island Gardens station. The video mentions that the Lewisham extension was completed ahead of schedule. Was surprising at the time as the contractor for the tunnels under the Thames managed to blow one of them up leaving a massive crater in sports pitch of the local school (George Green School). For a long time afterwards you could seen mud stains against the white walls of the school!
Awesome documentary
This train goes past my primary school cyril jackson. i usually get on the end of the train for best view and take a look out at the school i used to go too and my childhood neighbourhood.

Great views of the DLR it’s nearly as old as me 💕
25:41 spooky
Disused signal boxes should be made into housing, can be done as there is others that are being used in that way
Great video. ☺️
Fascinating
Protections doors in 1990 :0
Newest documentary for trains
Fantastic footage. Thank you for uploading this!
When we went to Minster in 1983 it still had station buildings. Local Scout club back down the line.
Brexiteers have given what the Irish Republicans have always dreamed of: a united Ireland.
did the irish republicans dream of Ireland not looking like them (irish) too? lol
damn i live in ashford and go to Canterbury west every day for uni on the highspeed train and its amazing to see how everything still looks the same even after 10+ years, crazy. Thanks for this video
Excellent excellent watch for a guy like me born when this wonder was in the thick of its existence! So many memories of when i first started using the dlr probably in 2004/5 when i was like 13/14😔 Now im 30 and life is reallll boy, not only personally, but politically also, life is headed in a different direction, gone are the good old days😌
I'm looking for a video taken from inside deltic round about the 00s. Was Faversham - Birmingham. My dad drove it and he's never been able to get a copy of the video. Can anyone help?
I have a question about your ELL to Shoreditch video, but comments are turned off. I am following the route on Google Maps and the centre conductor rail is not there! How can that be??? Thanks
If you're following it recently, that would be because it was removed and converted to third rail only, as part of the extension/Overground conversion works?
My first ride on the DLR was in 1991.
Shoutout to Sooty yo!
LDDC sponsored Millwall football club in 1984-85. I remember seeing that on their shirts when they played at Luton in the 6th round of the FA cup ( the infamous ‘ riot ‘ game ).
DLR only one public transport fully accessible for wheelchair-users.
elizabeth line?
There’s something very Alan Partridge about this.

Love the old video of how the Docklands Light Railway was first built. Even was built before I was born 😄
I think it’s interesting as well. I was 8 years old when it first opened and I first travelled on it in 1991. I thought it was the best thing I’d ever seen in regards to public transport!!
@@mrkipling2201 Nice.
i left in 1989 and canary wharf was a hole in the ground---i rejoined in 1991 and it was either finished or nearly finished--the tower i mean btw
Freedom for Ireland
Line speeds now 80 mph in places which is nice.
Super, thanks Traincrew
Thanks for uploading, Traincrew.
Sounds like a 377 or 375
I used to have this on video! I was hoping this would be on there!
I worked on the DLR for 25 yrs, it became a really effective railway system
They should have kept the original island gardens
Do you know when the original trains were replaced? I think it was probably around 1992 or 1993.
@@ajs41 we started testing the new trains as 1992 stock and thats what they became known as to rolling stock techs
@@raymondwalsh7957 Thanks. I'm fascinated by the early history of the DLR, but it's difficult to find out a lot of information about it. For example, it's well known that the doors didn't actually open at the Canary Wharf stop for a long time because there was nothing there, no reason to get off since it was just a building site, but it's difficult to find out when the doors did open for the first time. That's the sort of nerdy information I'm interested in.
@@ajs41 i believe the tower at canary wharf opened about 1991 but couldn't say exactly, sorry
excellent train journey👍 seeing how the wye signal box as it used to be and how it is now, was there any plan to straighten out the line at grove ferry
42:00 Nice to see these old trains still going in 2004.
Nicknamed Sooty. Oh my.
What, the little yellow hand puppet from the children's television show??
Is this an Electrostar we're riding?
Yes it is an electrostar, you can hear the acceleration whine at 0:25
Yep based on the loud ac noise it makes in the cab..I think that's ac anyway
@@bb-3653 I take it you mean air conditioning, as the power supply is DC.
@@denelson83 yeah loool, I knew I'd get backlash for that 😂😂but yeah the air con.
love it
Surprised it started on platform 4 which is only for Eurostars
It’s clearly platform 5
Oh yeah I had a stupid moment
So many foot crossings on this line
Such a pity we descended into a backward kip after the Brits left and then gave our so called freedom to the E.U.............we couldn't run a bath never mind a country.
Nonsense we know you are an Ulster Loyalist
A great potted history of the system and as you say at the end it has now become a mature system
I must say, it is a transport masterpiece from an area that was at one stage going nowhere. Canary Wharf is an interesting station, three tracks, passengers at either end of the platforms boarding at the same time. Tower Gateway as of 2017 is still there so is Bank in the heart of the Square Mile. Since this video was filmed, Woolwich Arsenal as of 2017 is one of many stations added to the ever growing network of the Docklands Light Railway. Like Greenwich and Lewisham, it is linked with National Rail services. A busy summer ahead with the Athletics World Championships that will probably match to that of the 2012 Olympics. My earliest memory of the DLR was in 1990 from Island Gardens to Tower Gateway while on a day out to Greenwich.
Canary Wharf was an interesting station when the system first opened in 1987, because officially there was a stop there, and it was on the maps, etc. But although the train stopped, the doors didn't open, because there was nothing there, so no reason for anyone to get off.
Woolwich Arsenal station opened in 2009 and was a significant factor in the redevelopment and improvement of the Woolwich/Plumstead area.
