Verissimus - The Philosopher (Marcus Aurelius)
Переглядів 1099 місяців тому
Marcus Aurelius was the last famous Stoic of antiquity but he was also to become the most powerful man in the known world - the Roman emperor. After losing his father at an early age, he threw himself into the study of philosophy. The closest thing history knew to a philosopher-king, yet constant warfare and an accursed plague almost brought his empire to its knees. "Life is warfare", he wrote,...

Marcus Aurelius - TRUTH IN THE MEDITATIONS Who was Marcus Aurelius the man, though? Many today came to know him through his portrayal by Richard Harris in the movie Gladiator (2000), and a few may recall Alec Guinness in The Fall of the Roman Empire (1964)-but these films are only loosely based on history. As it happens, we know more about Marcus Aurelius’s biography than that of any other Stoi...

Hugo Boss Designed the Nazi Uniforms - Fake History 101 Things that Never Happened
Переглядів 3699 місяців тому
Why on earth would the Nazi party ask such a small clothing manufacturer with no real design talent or experience to design their uniforms? There is no evidence whatsoever that Hugo Boss was ever asked to design any Nazi uniforms, and Boss was not given permission to tweak, alter or change the designs of his orders. And seriously, why do people think that manufacturers would be allowed to adapt...
Napoleon Bonaparte shot the nose off the Sphinx - Fake History 101 Things that Never Happened
Переглядів 2329 місяців тому
In 1760 (before Napoleon was born …), Dr Siegmund Jakob Baumgarten published A Supplement to the English Universal History, lately published in London. In it, he describes the Sphinx as ‘very little hurt, except only that his nose is maimed, probably by the Mohammedans, from their bitterness against images’. There are more examples - those are just a few. But the point is that we have eyewitnes...

Fake history is a lot like fake news, except, well, rather old news. This book is full of examples, many of which will seem funny or rather harmless (though of course it is annoying for historians and history addicts that people still believe certain long-debunked misconceptions!), but others can actually be harmful and dangerous. Take for instance the myths, misattributed quotations and wrongl...

The only critique would be the outdated claim that Buddhists do not believe in a creative source. It's not that God isn't there, but in Buddhism one could say that "God" isn't the focus.

His opinion on the house is not shared by all. And to frame Wittgenstein’s task as to “destroy philosophy once and for all” is hyperbolic. And his pronouncement that Philosophical Investigations is disappointing does not take into account that it contains some of the most influential ideas in all of philosophy. Could not listen to this speaker anymore near the end.

Nietsche should give an example of the things that defy the law of noncontradiction. Because he can't he only asserts the equality of the law of noncontradiction to any other subjective law that man makes up. His assertion is not proof that the law of noncontradiction is subjective or man-made.
