Welcome, This channel features fly fishing and fly tying videos (plus some traditional bowhunting videos). As an outdoor writer for many years, I've expanded my horizons with this channel to help as many people as I can to enjoy these pursuits.
My goal is to promote fly fishing and fly tying by providing information and entertainment for beginners or experts. I still learn new things, like Euronymphing, but also want to promote traditions, like my series on tying the historical fly patterns originating in the Adirondacks.
I publish once a week and respond to all community comments and emails.
I am the author of three fly fishing books, including my new book, “The Greats of Adirondack Fly Fishing.” I also wrote the "New York Fly Fishing Guide," and "Warmwater Fly-Fishing, Finding and Catching Warm Water Species."

Fly Tying for Salmon and Big Trout Lively Legs Black Stone
How to tie the Lively Legs (Steelhead Version) Black Stone, a simple step by step fly tying video tutorial for everyone, including fly tying for beginners for fly tying for trout and salmon. Fly fishing for runs of salmon and big trout, whether it be in Alaska, or the Great Lakes Tributaries, or any of the places where these fish run upstream to spawn or just to feed on the bounty, is one of the most enjoyable fly fishing venues. These flies have worked for me for this type of fly fishing and they produce on crowded streams because they are often a little different than what everyone else has, and they accommodate most people’s fly tying skills.
This fly tying video instruction features a simple materials and has a full list in the beginning of the video. Simple stuff for a very effective pattern. If you watch the video to the end, you will be able to tie this very productive fly, and even beginners will be able to do so.
I am an outdoor writer and photographer with fly fishing articles articles that have appeared in national publications including Fly Tyer, American Angler and Outdoor Life. My fly fishing books include: “The New York Fly-Fishing Guide (Amato Publications), “Warmwater Fly Fishing- Finding and Catching Warmwater Species), and his new book, “The Greats of Adirondack Fly Fishing.” My new book explores the lives of six anglers who shaped fly fishing in New York’s Adirondack Mountains, including their fly patterns.
I am a lifelong fly fisherman and fly tyer since age 7, I have fished extensively throughout the Northeast. I have also tied flies for the same amount of time and have created fly patterns for trout and warmwater species.
I have produced two fly fishing DVDs including “Tying. And Fishing for Smallmouth Bass,” and “Tying and Fishing for Panfish.”

Been fishing Jeff’s pattern for years! It’s a great pattern that has caught many steelhead for me. Like your take on this streamer pattern !
Definitely a fly you need in your steelhead box! Glad you liked the video.
nice fly, and a beautiful tying desk👍
Thanks! The tying desk was an anniversary gift from my wife. It is a great tying desk.
Enjoy reading your article in Fly Tyer and thanks for sharing patterns
Glad you enjoyed the article and the video. Have a Happy Holiday season!
Hey Rob. I’ll be going for steelhead in February, it’ll be my first time trying for them. There’s a few guys talking about emerald shiners or minnows, so naturally I’m learning about them. Good timing for staging this pattern.
I hope the fly works for your steelhead trip. Please send me a picture if it does!
@ That would be a real good thing 👍
@@tomt5176 Steelhead for me are something that I have to drive to get to. If you hit the right day it is awesome, if not it is a learning experience. Hopefully you will hit it on a good day!
Hi Rob. Very pretty looking bug. I have lotsa gurglers in the box, but none with the rubber legs as you put together so nicely. It’s been a while since saying hello because it seems UA-cam has been messing around with my subs and alerts for whatever reason. Now you’re back up on my message board. Cu next time.
Hi Tom, glad you like the bug. I am going to develop something similar for smallmouths so stay tuned. Hope you and your family have a great Holiday Season! Don't forget to go and enter the giveaway (look for the post I made with my two dogs watching Rudolph.)
@ Thanks Rob, I’ll be sure to check it out. Wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and the best of health, happiness and good fishing in the New Year.
Nicely done. I think the advances to the Morris mouse are very enhancing.
Thanks. Mousing is trending lately and I hope this pattern works for you! It’s an easy fly to tie.
What is light bright?
It is called Edge Bright, it comes as a sheet and you cut a strip for the body. Most fly tying suppliers will have it.
Ive never seen another eagle craft desk
My wife got me the desk for our 20th anniversary. It is an American Lifestyles (Amish Built) that came from a furniture store in Glens Falls, New York. It is a great fly tying setup.
Looks good. Will the fly ride hook up with the I-Balz on the top of the shank ?
On a heavy salmon hook it should ride point down. The IBalz are light for their size. Great question! Hope this helps.
Good work on what looks like a fine soft hackle for steelhead.
Glad you liked it. The soft hackles are fun to make and you can get a classic steelhead fly look that makes for an effective fly, plus they are not hard to make. You may like the video on the "Smurf" soft hackle. I had a double-digit catch and release day on steelies with it.
Beautiful fly !
Thanks! It is my favorite attractor dry fly of all time. I've caught trout in a number of states with it, including Alaska.
G’morning. I’ve tied comets before just to do it and I like the green version too. That sockeye on the opening of the video is beautiful. Good stuff Rob. Oh, we got back from Maine. Been dry there all summer and we found low water with just a few salmon. We got some each day, though it wasn’t ideal fishing. Be well Rob.
The sockeye is a reproduction mount I had made from a photo. Colors are perfect. Taxidermist does a great job. Caught that fish and several more on that fly. We didn’t get to Maine this year. Sorry the conditions were off when you were there. Maybe next year!
I really loved this one!! As always great stuff!!
Thanks! Had fun putting it together. I have been checking out your videos as well, looks like we fish similar types of water in the Adirondacks.
Nice one Rob, thanks.
Glad you enjoyed the video!
Saw your article about this fly in Fly Tyer. Enjoyed both the article and the video. You mentioned a bluegill pattern in the article. How does it differ from the perch? Would like for you to post a video of it for us Deep South warm water fishermen.
I will post a photo of the bluegill . I will shoot a video of it sometime in the next couple of months for you. Little different color scheme on it.
Nice, I just caught my last brookie for this year a couple days ago. Your water is similar to mine, I bet there's a brookie in every plunge pool to be caught during spring and summer hatches.
Usually in the deeper pools, but like a lot of wild trout streams, they get smaller the further you get upstream. Glad you liked the video!
Would love to see how these flys are fished, setup, boat etc
For Ed Bendl, the man who taught me these flies, he trolled with a motor boat with a sinking line in the Spring and Fall. He was in his older years and could still fly fish this way. For me, I go out in a boat in the springtime and fish them with a sinking, shooting head fly line. The water is about 4-6 feet deep on the flats in the lake that are off of the spawning streams where the smelt are running. It is an early morning/late evening fishery.
🍁 Autumn 🍂 Streams are Enchanting ! 🎣
@@brianfeeney9493 You get a brief window of time that goes by way too quickly!
I could do 6 months of Autumn 🍂
Thanks Much Rob 🍁 🎣 ☀️
@@brianfeeney9493 You are welcome. I hope you enjoyed the video.
Hi Rob. That’s something a different and cool. There’s a couple amphibians living around here: toads, frogs, salamanders and newts, hope I didn’t miss any. This one, to me, looks more like a newt, but then again, it’s all newt to me! Fish it in good health.
It is an odd fly I will give you that. It can also be made in orange like a newt . I have a photo if it will help, construction is the same. Good luck with your fall fishing!
@@robstreeteroutdoors8912Please feel free to post a pic of the newt version so we can see them both side by side
@@tomt5176 I'll post a photo today.
Curious how you rig and fish this is lakes? Time of year, depth, boats? Etc. nice video!
I usually use an interchangeable sink tip system that I made myself, but lately I fish multi tip fly lines with sink tips. Usually a mid rate sinking section. You don’t need to go to deep in the Spring and Fall.
Thanks 🎉 ROB !!!
You are welcome. Had fun on the creek this season.
Man that’s a great day on the water. I only busted out the fly rod once this summer, but steelhead season is about to heat up here in Erie Pa, and I’ll be drifting flies multiple days a week for the next 4 months.
Steelhead are a lot of fun. I've never fished in PA for them, have to try that at some point. Good luck! You should try smallmouths, probably can find them on some of your steelhead streams during the summer.
Im going tomorrow, hopefully it turns out half as good as yours
Best of luck and have fun!
Hi Rob. Nice streamer pattern. Very reminiscent of New England style tandem streamers like from Maine and definitely catch fish when trolled. Finally, I’m finished my deck project, it came out really nice and the wife is so pleased that there’s now a new dishwasher going in today. Retirement is busier than working! Keep catching some while I’m laboring here. C u next time.
Tom- I too spent the summer working on a deck. Painting and replacing boards. Thankfully, it is done and I can fish! Good luck to you as well.
Double your fun: try a Tenkara!
I did fish with a guy this year who was catching panfish on Tenkara. I haven't given it a try.
That foggy morning looked epic! Beauty river, awesome fish, thanks for sharing.
Glad you liked the video. Should be getting out in the fog again this week as the river is starting to turn on. The only problem with the fog is that you have to be careful you don't get ran over by a 40 foot yacht!
Beautiful piece of water, thanks for sharing!
Thanks! That spot is where I taught myself to fly fish as a kid.
Nice! Interesting configuration with the opposing hook directions. That's really simple, but I don't have the patience in between coffee cups. Your camera work has improved a lot. Love the guizzar playing intro too! Let me know if you need more bucktail, LOL!
It is a simple style of fly to tie. Shouldn't take too long. I've caught a bunch of trout in lakes with Ed's flies.
Really appreciate you taking the time to show me this. I'm trying to get a setup for traveling together and this really helped.
I am glad you like the video. We are out on a trout stream and I used the same kit to tie the flies I needed. You might find my tying videos for the General Admission dry flies useful as well. Easy style to tie and will match any hatch you will find on the road.
Nice one thanks
Glad you liked the video. More to come each Saturday!
Nice one Rob. What size hook would you recommend? Thanks.
I like size 10 on this fly.
@@robstreeteroutdoors8912 thanks
Thank You Rob 🎉 Very timely as I am currently pursuing Stillwater Trout !!!!! Happy August ….. 🌟 🎣 💫
You are welcome. Best of luck on the lakes!
Hey Rob. That looks like lotsa fun. I took the whole ride with you there and got a chuckle from your wife peeling out with your pickup! Very nice quiet day of smally fishing. Some of those runs look great to work a nice brown woolly bugger through, I’m sure it would do the trick. Give it a try during your next trip. C u then.
Hi Tom. I had a fun day for sure. I really didn't spend a lot of time on each of the pools. The bass were hot for topwater so I didn't change flies as the day progressed because the popper kept getting hits. I hope to run down there again. There is one spot I really want to fish again for sure. I have been using new streamer patterns that I came up with, and they appeared in Fly Tyer, the trilobal minnow. Bass and trout have been killing it this season. Brown buggers are good. I think the bass are still hitting crayfish and they usually switch to minnows in the next week or two if the water starts cooling.
I did something similar on a paddleboard on the sacandaga early July, I've never seen more +18in bass
I've never been on a paddleboard, but there are some good videos of folks fly fishing from them. I think I would be afraid of dropping something expensive in the water. Haven't hit the Sacandaga yet this year. I usually take the boat. Glad you had a good outing up there.
Hi Rob. I’ve had these in my box these in my box for a long time and haven’t tried using them. Guess I don’t fish midge patterns often, it’s probably a good idea to start. C u again.
I have done well with them on lakes. They are an easy tie as well.
What kind of raft is that ?
That is a Water Master raft. They are pricey, but very nice!
It is a Watermaster Grizzly that I picked up as a gently used buy. It did well getting down the creek and I also had it out on an Adirondack trout lake twice this year. Thus far I like it, but want to add a couple of things.
Nice. One of the first flies I tied.
It is a great fly to have on a lake for sure!
Hi Rob. Hope you’re doing well and keeping a line tight. Fishing for me this summer has been ‘leeched’ away by my deck rebuild project and the constant heat. No deck - no place to hang my kayaks. I haven’t even got a keeper fluke yet! I’m approaching the finish line with my project and it’s looking good. Catch something for me!
I hope to do a drift trip for smallmouth tomorrow. I’m still decking’ as well so don’t feel bad!
@@robstreeteroutdoors8912 Sounds good Rob, hope the smallies cooperate for you.
Thank you for great video. I have a warm water fly fishing book that your the author.
Glad you enjoyed the video. There are fly tying videos for all the flies in the Warmwater book, plus many other flies on my UA-cam channel at Rob Streeter Outdoors
I have copies of old writings by Fran, he used an orange thread because he felt the flies in the area seem to all have a unique rusty orange color to them. Both nymphs and duns
That was one thing unique to his flies. It is in his pattern guide that I have. Definitely works on the fish.
@@robstreeteroutdoors8912 I have printouts that I saved from the late 80's of Fran's flies. I could not find his theory on using orange thread in a lot of his patterns but I swear i seen it somewhere. When I started fly fishing, his flies and Art Flick's were my go to patterns. My first trout caught on the Beaverkill during an evening hatch fell victim to the "Usual". Now I live in eastern Idaho and fly selection is much more complicated and burdensome. I just may bring the old patterns back like Flick's Variants and Fran's flies and see how they do on our western trout fisheries. I have Fran's instructions including black & white photo's for the following patterns: Haystacks, Ausable Wulff, Mini Muddler Series, Caddis Series, Usual, Parachutes, Old Fashioned Bucktail, Pick Bodied Nymphs, The Beetle. He included his poetry in his writings. The guy had class, style and grace. I sure do miss the old time writers. Rob - I hope you have covered all these flies in your series. Thanks for keeping old memories alive!
@@wyomingtrout5581 I have covered the Usual, Ausable Wulff, and the Haystack. I have Fran's pattern guide book and all the flies you mentioned are in there. As far as them working out west, I caught a lot of trout in Colorado on the Ausable Wulff, and also caught grayling and trout in Alaska on them. The flies should work and I'm guessing if you are fishing heavily pressured waters they might work better.
