When does a new whisky distillery stop being new?
In this episode we caught up with Ken Langenfeld who is the Kilchoman Distillery Sales Manager for UK and France.
Ken talked us through his own personal journey into the wonderful world of Scotch which has taken him from bars in New Zealand and Australia to selling whisky from Islay.
Kilchoman Distillery is one of the origional 'new distilleries' on Islay but is fast approaching it's 20th birthday in 2025.
This triggered the question about when new distilleries change from being the new kids on the block to being an established or legacy distillery.
One of the other really interesting conversations we had during this episode was about Kilchoman staying away from the traditional age statements on their bottles.
Does age statement vs non-age statement whisky make a difference?
Ken is all about the flavour and talks about how the Kilchoman Distillery is one of the largest employers on Islay because everything is done on location.
From growing the barley, cutting the peat and traditional floor malting all the way to maturing on site, bottling and then distributing around the world.
This episode was in conjunction with Edinburgh Glasshouse Hotel who kindly invited us to their 'Snug' which has loads of exciting whisky on the shelf.
Kilchoman will be the featured 'Malt of the Month' for December and Ken will be back on the 5th of December in the hotel to deliver a paired whisky and cheese tasting.
