once you have started your 3drop stitch, you need to be able to "step up" to make it all work out well

This is just the tools and some of the tricks I use when doing the style of beadwork I enjoy.
Hi thanks I already know this watching for fun thanks again and good luck with ypur videos
Thank you. I’m struggling with beading my first lanyard but your demonstration has helped quite a bit. How do you figure out patterns?
Lovely i learned thanks for sharing such a nice clip thanks again
Glad you enjoyed it

Hey I'm not sure how active you are on here anymore. But I'm looking for some wisdom. I'm beading a vape pen and I want to bead around the on button and continue the weave around. Any ideas?
Depending on how big the holes in your beads are, you should be able to bead up to the button, then thread through beads around the button and move on again on the other side. If you have to do this a lot of times the bead holes will fill up with thread and you won't be able to do it with this method. But if the button isn't too big it would work. Does this help?
Thank you for such a clear demonstration. I really enjoy your teachings 👐
Thank you for your video. However, I know this stitch as "tubular peyote." I disagree that this is 2 drop as that requires picking up 2 beads at a time while skipping 2 beads. I watched the entire episode waiting for there to be 2 beads at some point. Only one bead was picked up at a time which makes it regular peyote. So, just a bit of my experience on bead tension. So that they don't flare, tug the thread after each bead goes through the next bead. That will put it in its place. Consistent tension is very important. Of course, this is how they work for me.
Hi roseannamoore8535. Thank you for your interest. I would encourage you to watch my video on peyote vs gourd stitch as that will address the problem of nomenclature and, perhaps, give you a better understanding of why I call it a 2 drop pattern. Cheers
Thank you. This makes sense as I am self-taught and watching UA-cam tutorials and how I learned about peyote stitch. I currently have issues that are seriously baffling, but after many restarts and backups and knowing my seed beads are different sizes these shifts can be helped with a gentler hand! Well, I am loving this process and your video explains what I am dealing with. Your video is supportive, informative and confirming.
Thank you so much! I am glad you found my videos helpful
I'm back at this stitch again. More determined. Am I correct that the first 2/3 of the beads on the project are actually the first 2 rows and when you start adding the 1 bead, that accounts for the 3rd row.
Yes, that is correct!
Great video, very helpful, thanks for sharing. I did not know that you need to step up at the end of every row! Would you consider doing a video that shows some designs for the 2-drop method?
Do you know if this can be done with other wood species? Thanks
Gourd and peyote stitch are the exact same technique. The difference is only in the names: the term “peyote stitch” is (or at least used to be) reserved solely for peyote paraphernalia of the Native American Church (NAC), which is beaded with this technique; whereas, the term “gourd stitch” is applied to non-NAC items that may be made in the exact same fashion, just not used for NAC purposes. The term “gourd stitch” comes from the beadwork done on the wooden-dowel handles of Gourd Dance shakers and on fan handles.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I just finished two lighter covers, one in peyote and one in gourd stitch and I was wondering why one was so stiff and the other so malleable (and also what's the advantages of each). A google search later and I was even more confused because i came across 2 and 3 bead peyote being called 2 drop and 3 drop peyote. Now it's all clear! But also my mind is blown by the last part...
So glad it was helpful to you! Happy beading!
That is amazing, thank you for doing a video. I understand it now and I'm excited to try it out on something.
Thank you. Looking forward to more
What you are showing here on graphs as 2 drop peyote is actually 1 drop peyote. 2 drop is 2 beads higher, 2 beads lower, 2 beads higher, 2 beads lower e.t.c. 🙂
Thank you, will definitely be watching more of your videos
hola , descubrí sus videos y son formidables , muy útiles e infomativos , me agrada este tipo de trabajo en cuentas , chaquiras , ojalá y pueda seguir produciendo videos , saludos desde CD mx México alguna red social donde pueda seguirle gracias
Good one
Thank you so much!
I hope you continue to add videos. This is amazing. I have purchased the Whispering Wind Crafts Annual but your videos are so helpful. Thank you!
Thank you so much. Yes I have a lot more planned, I just have a life that is uncooperative!
hope to see some more videos soon. Ill definately look you up on fb though
OMG No more videos? Where are you? I want so to learn.
Near Lynchburg, VA. I am sorry there are not more videos. Elderly parents, work and just plain tired are my only excuses. I have had a video mostly put together for about a year now that I haven't been able to get out. I hope to get back to producing them. I would be open to teaching you if you have a real interest and are close enough that we could get together. I would love to see more people doing this kind of work.
@@blueheronoutdoorschool4209 Such a dream. Unfortunately I currently live in Kansas with my youngest daughter. I’m older and don’t get around well. I’ll keep looking for your videos. Hope your parents are doing ok. I’ll keep you snd your family in my prayers. Miigwetch
Well you've defiantly done your homework. I would have been you 25 years ago. I wouldn't have been able to see this in my minds eye. Seeing it graphed out, I have a better understanding. Not totally, but got the jest of it. Thank you so much.
Holy Cow! What a clear explanation with graphics! I've always wanted to learn this stitch. I'm a visual learner, so seeing everything was fantastic. I'm gonna try. Will subscribe with hopes of learning more, especially how to create designs for the 3 drop gourd stitch. Miigwetch
Thank you so much!
If I'm beading around a bottle and the bottle gets narrower towards the top or if I want to round an edge to enclose a container with my bead work I assume the count of how many beads gets less as it gets narrower. How do you incorporate that in the beading??
Many people, myself included, create thinking about colors and patterns. It’s so fascinating to hear from people that have a deeper relationship with how beads work. Thanks for sharing some history, also. Thank you 🤩😊
Thank you for taking the time to comment and wishing you happy beading!
Does anyone know where I can get z-line 3 drop gourd stitch graph paper?
Can you say why they are called “S” line and “Z” line ? I don’t see an S or a Z, lol.
Can you say why they are called “S” line and “Z” line ? I don’t see an S or a Z, lol.
Hi Cindy, this is explained in an earlier video. "Peyote vs. Gourd stitch". but to answer your question... the line in the center of an "S" runs from upper left to lower right. So any slant that runs from upper left to lower right is an "S" line. Similarly for "Z" the center line of the Z runs the opposite way, from upper right to lower left. Does this make sense? Happy beading!
@@blueheronoutdoorschool4209 ahh, ok. That makes perfect sense. I missed that reference some how. Thank you for responding ;)
Thank you so much for this vid. I’ve just discovered the gourd stitch and my thought also was “Ingenious!!!” Gosh I love beads. Thanks again for superb instruction;)
You are very welcome, thank you for the kind comment!
Enjoying your videos. I've done a fair share of 2 and 3 drop, and notice that when using doubled thread, particularly size D Nymo, the needle tends to catch on the thread from the previous row. This REALLY hampers undoing beadwork from the beginning towards the direction of your beadwork. So, if possible, I try my best to avoid catching my thread from the previous rows as I build my rows. Just a personal observation!☺️
Yes, catching your thread creates huge hassles. Particularly if it is doubled. I dont double my thread. I do use size D nymo. The beadwork creates such a strong matrix with every bead having been gone through twice, that I stopped doubling my thread for net based beadwork systems like gourd stitch. I have never had a problem with it. If you DO NOT double your thread, you can take the needle off and pull the thread back through easily even if you did catch the other thread somewhere along the way. I usually use size 11 beads and it is nearly impossible to get 4 threads through each bead not to mention the times you need to get even more through.
It was indeed quite maddening to try and dissect any understanding from Dick Past's tutorial, almost to tears 😅 I'm so excited to come across this video.
I'm so happy I came across this video! I have been trying to find someone who could show me! I have photo copies of the article did the tutorial on this, and CANNOT make heads or tails of it. How would I reach out for more help if I need to?
It is my plan to make more videos and hopefully they will answer more questions. Unfortunately it is slow going as life gets in the way. If you have any suggestions for future videos I would love to hear them. I'm also on FB as Blue Heron Outdoor School and you could DM me if you have questions.
I found NanoFil fishing line. It is working well for me.
Haha still lost on the math, but that's dyscalculia for you...thank you for the tutorial!
Aaniin! from Penny and Rick
Miigwech! apegish mino-ayaayeg!
best of all this guy is smart, he knows we beginners sometimes don’t know how to get the math exactly he explained and future numbers the formulas. Also he gets to the start and keeps it simple , so many show off all their work first and it’s discouraging for me, so I never really get it to stick. Great video thank you!!
Thank you so much for your reply, I really appreciate the feedback!
Thanks so much for posting! Really great dive into this subject!
Amazing work! When are we going to have the pleasure to be guided by you? I really would love learn this technique
Thanks for asking. The animation part of the next video is done. Just having trouble finding the time to put the rest of it together! Please stay tuned, it is coming and thank you for your interest!
Thanks for sharing!!
In my 2.5 year journey It was making me nuts trying to decipher the difference between gourd and peyote. I did realize that there was a difference in 3 drop beading. Looked everywhere trying to find someone to spell it out. It took me awhile to learn Gourd stitching. 😳. I still don’t use it very often. However this video has helped me to understand what it can do. Thanks! It’s my desire to stay with tradition but in contemporary design. Even saying that it’s the beads that lead me. But since I haven’t given gourd stitch much of a chance I will now. Can’t wait for future videos on this subject. Thanks, again!
So glad it was helpful to you! I have more videos planned, life seems to get in the way of making them. Soon I hope. happy beading!
Thank you! 😊
Thank you so much! 😊
Thanks so much!
Excellent instruction...thank you!!
Best tutorial I've seen on this. Very helpful. Thank you. Much appreciated.
You're welcome! keep on beading!
Wow, just wow! You are talented. I can't wait to see your tutorials. Stay safe and healthy.
Thank you, hope it is helpful
This is a fantastic tutorial! Thank you!
