An accomplished musician and one man act with twelve albums under his belt, Freddy Charles is a singer/songwriter and multi instrumentalist currently based in Los Angeles. With a pop/rock sound influenced by hints of jazz and EDM, he records every note of his record himself and acts as his own engineer and producer, giving him complete artistic control of his musical vision.
Freddy got his start in music as a drummer, giving him a strong rhythmic foundation to build on as he began studying guitar, songwriting, and production. His early records found a small devoted fanbase as he began cultivating his style and coming into his own as an artist. Eventually, he would find a national audience when several of his songs were picked up by Sirius XM and broadcasted across the country, as well as being featured in several independent films. As he continued to make increasingly adventurous records, he became an in demand session drummer and educator.

    Hello Sir\ Mam, I Visited your UA-cam channel and noticed it ranks lower than others. SEO is lacking, though your content is fantastic. Do you know why your videos aren't attracting more views? One key factor is insufficient SEO (your videos' SEO score is 38/100%, that's why your video is not reaching out to the people and you do not have many subscribers, views, likes, watch time, and comments. I can help you improve it 80-90% if you'd like. I think your UA-cam channel will make your dream come true. I am waiting for your response.

    How do you manage going back to 5a's on the kit after using these? Im practicing with marching sticks currently which are making 5as feel like tooth picks

    • @freddycharles
      @freddycharles 4 місяці тому

      That's the whole point of practicing with the heavy sticks. I move easily back to 5a's because the heavy sticks train certain muscles and the thinner sticks such as 5a's train other muscles. So using them both, you cover the whole spectrum of all the muscles in the hand and fingers.

    My first teacher (in 1974) taught with matched grip. Then I moved in 1977 and found my next teacher who taught traditional grip. So I went from playing matched grip for 3 years to all of a sudden having to re-learn with traditional grip. I've never looked back. I can play both grips equally well. I see no problem teaching anyone today to play with traditional grip. Play both. Be open minded to both, it's music, it's art. Look at Todd Sucherman, Vinnie, Weckl, Steve Smith, Virgil. All killing it with both grips. I will say one thing though...if you're talking about playing death metal, maybe traditional grip may not serve you well playing blast beats. I don't know, I've never seen anyone playing blast beats using traditional grip - who knows, anything is possible. But there's a lot more music out there other than death metal. All the best in your journey!!

    Traditional grip comes from playing in a marching band with a drum strapped to your chest at an angle. If you play sat down at a drumkit, traditional grip is strictly worse than matched grip. Not hating, just facts. If you've been playing traditional grip all your life, you don't need to switch but teaching a beginner student traditional rather than matched is just nonsense.

    • @e3gh757
      @e3gh757 6 місяців тому

      Tell that to Buddy Rich, Virgil Donati, and Stewart Copeland. Who cares what grip you play. Learn both! They each have their own sonic applications! This is music! Some people play with their feet! Or their fingers! Listen to Guster!! Dude plays a kit with his hands and I bet it sounds better than 90% of the drummers complaining that traditional grip is dumb!! The question should be, did you convey your musical expression to the listener the way you wanted or not? Maybe there is another way? Stop this nonsense and learn! Learn about all the options you have in front of you so you can express the music inside of you the way you want and stop caring what other people think. These are tools. Tools to create with. If it doesn’t work for you find another tool, but don’t shit on a tool someone else uses to make something beautiful. Hey Jimi Hendricks you should really play a left handed guitar…. Get out of here

    • @JackFou
      @JackFou 6 місяців тому

      @@e3gh757 Dude, what's with this nonsense knee-jerk reaction? Please read again what I said. I never said that you cannot play fast or play well on a drum set with traditional grip. There are countless examples that show it is possible. I also didn't say that anyone who plays this way is wrong. My point is entirely that the traditional grip is outdated and not meant for playing a drumkit in a sitting position. The point is that traditional grip evolved entirely for historic reasons from military drummers. It was never intended for the drum set and therefore the ergonomics do not match. If you look at drummers playing traditional on a drum set you often see that, they angle the snare away from themselves to prevent excessive strain. The problem is that this less suitable for the other hand and also the rest of the drum set is not set up this way. Try playing fast two-handed hihat for extended periods with a traditional grip and tell me how your left shoulder likes it. You certainly cannot hit very hard this way so it is inherently unsuited for anyone playing harder rock or metal which is why you really only see people from a jazz background use it. You talk about musical expression but that's got nothing to do with this. There is nothing that traditional grip allows you to play that you cannot play with matched grip. Traditional grip is purely a matter of nostalgia and history and your personal emotional attachment. Ergonomically, for playing a drum set sitting down, it is strictly worse and we should not be teaching it to beginners.

    • @freddycharles
      @freddycharles 6 місяців тому

      It's a matter of preference however, I don't push traditional grip on anyone. What I do is help people that are struggling with the grip or teach people who wanna learn how to play the traditional grip like the guy below it. Technically speaking though, the standard drumset is setup for traditional grip.

    • @Warpedsmac
      @Warpedsmac 5 місяців тому

    Honestly it is pretty silly if you get this question a lot. There are MANY traditional players that do this and even more, will tilt their high toms as well. Nothing new. Nothing unusual and your wrists thank you for it.

  • @tazdrum73
    @tazdrum73 6 місяців тому

    The same would hold true for six stroke rolls or any other rudimentary employing a multiple bounce stroke. However, my biggest hurdle is moving from controlling each individual note to allowing the bounce (e.g. 2 bounces for one stroke). I just cannot seem to do it but I know that if I can get past this then it would open up so many possibilities. Another issue is getting bounces from toms, especially larger floor toms that are usually tuned lower (looser skins).

    • @freddycharles
      @freddycharles 6 місяців тому

      Focus on getting the bounces on the rebounding surfaces first. Then, when you get stronger you can get a feel for adding it to surfaces with less rebound.
