Walter Williams on American Education (2016) “African-American students are getting a raw deal because - in the name of diversity - the system is superficially propping up those students who are doing poorly, according to economist and conservative columnist Walter E. Williams. “I am glad that I got all of my education - I received all of my education before it become fashionable for white people to like black people,” Williams said in an interview Wednesday on Tallahassee’s Morning Show with Preston Scott. He was recalling a comment about his education that he offered in the documentary “Suffer No Fools.” Williams, who is 80 years old, explained, “when I got an ‘A’ it was an honest to God ‘A’ and when I got a ‘C’ it was an honest to God ‘C.’ They didn’t give a damn about my self-esteem.” According to Williams, many colleges, in seeking to advance “diversity,” are recruiting African-American students to their campuses who are unprepared for the college curriculum. And, when those students arrive, they are not provided the right tools to survive in the real world. He added that this is not just a problem for African-Americans, but for recent high school graduates in general. Williams said about 50 percent of newly arrived college students are unprepared, as, according to Williams, most colleges are finding many incoming freshmen need remedial English or Math classes. [dcquiz] “So what that’s saying is that high schools are issuing fraudulent diplomas. That is [the schools] are saying these kids are college-ready, but they really are not college-ready at all. But for black students it’s even worse. That is a large percentage of black students - maybe 60 percent of black students - are just unprepared for college,” he said, adding the percentage could be larger. Williams argued that it is “cruel” for college administrators to admit students who are unprepared, unable to keep up, and as such, likely to feel out-of-place and alienated from their classmates. “What many black college students now are demanding segregated housing on college campuses, segregated spaces so that they can feel more comfortable among themselves. And I think this is utter cruelty to these students,” he said.” www.google.com/amp/s/www.wsj.com/amp/articles/the-weekend-interview-with-walter-williams-the-state-against-blacks-11606941221 I would do everything I could to homeschool. Saw you on Jesse lee .. i think its cool that oou’re focusing your work on improving education for black youth at the elementary and high schoo level. I just want to understand why you dislike trump so much if he’s for school choice and Obama tried to get rid of it in DC and if Trump has increased the federal funding at HBCUs. I could mention other things but that was the main question i had for u. I’m disabled and i watch a lot of UA-cam and honestly i want every youth to succeed in life regardless of class or race. I hope its ok that I’m entering the discussion.

Black minds don't exist. If black people continue to self-segregate yourselves from America and humanity, you will never be at peace or succeed anywhere.

When and every time after I heard what she referred to me and the entirety of my race as "super-predators" turning me into. It changed my perspective and view of what it meant to be a black boy or man, during the time of Mrs. Clinton's statements. I share that because of Im so appreciative of all of you Ed.D's and Ph.D's. I would like to know how we can make this information comprehensive for all the community stakeholders (i.e. parents, educators, students and policy-makers)?

Dr. Woods: Your work is undeniably critical and relevant to our collective social success. The data, images, and the linkages are extremely compelling to perhaps most people. I want to focus on providing these types of "eye-opening" experiences to those who are open to engaging in the deeply personal introspective exercise of discovering their biases and then taking the necessary action to create and sustain race positive behaviors. As a PhD. student of Leadership and Change and an Organization/Leadership Coach; I am committed to investigating and researching how organizations may "consciously or unconsciously" participate in these types of detrimental and unproductive behaviors in the workplace. I'm currently teamed with a number of "like-minded" practitioners and professionals crafting strategies and practices to address these issues and affect positive change. I look forward to learning more from your research. The information and lessons you share is shedding light in many a dark corner of our culture and society.

This was a great lecture. As a black women who went to LAUSD schools k-12 and now a graduate student.... I still see these patterns in higher education. Additionally, I see the effects that it has had on my interactions with my professors from my undergraduate career and even now as a graduate student. Really great and informative lecture that is not spoken about enough! Thank you!

Dr. Woods, I attended the first session of the public broadcast of the BMM Course. Thank you so much for the work you are doing. I know it doesn’t come easy but it’s vey important to me. It has inspired me to further process my visions for my profession and become a better voice for our community of students. I want to take this passion and further my education to obtain my terminal degree. From there I plan to reclaim my power and provide positive outlets for academia and support for higher education in my home community. I am a first generation student from a majority minority community and I want to share this knowledge and my passion to further the gateway for other youth, like myself, to have the passion to attend higher education to take back their power and shape their goals and visions. These conversations are mandatory to change the Black experience in our country. Thank you for inspiring me and re-igniting my passion.

Thank you Allison for your kind words. I am honored to have played some part in re-igniting your passion for this important work. As you think about options for your terminal degree, consider programs to prioritize racial justice work. There are many great scholars who are doing meaningful work, find programs where they reside. There is so much work to be done to change the hearts and minds of those who regularly engage our students everyday, I am glad to be arm and arm with you in creating a better future for our Black boys and men.
