I am French Canadian- first French descendant born in Quebec city in 1620. We grew up " Mireille Guillano French Women don't get Fat: eating with the seasons, no snacking. eating at a set table. Epiphanie tradition. i have been living on the West Coast of the USA for 37 years. So i relate to your dual nationalities conundrum. 🙂

The twelve days of Xmas were from Xmas day until Epiphanie. People took 2 weeks off- schools used to be closed from Dec 23 until Jan 7 and everybody visited family for 2 weeks. Families did not have car until the 1960s. So traveling was slower and there was nothing to do. No TV, no internet. The shortest days of the year. So visiting was fun. Kids would get the presents at Epiphanie ( when the 3 kings brought the presents) . The American capitalist Xmas makes it more palatable for other religions to join in. It is about presents and nice decorations.

The 200-300Euros is also an American tradition. In the early 1990s, American capitalism was exported with Apple, Nike, Amazon. Christmas is about American businesses making lots of money. It has lost a lot of its spiritual meaning in America. And now, because of multiculturism in America, we are losing Christmas. i wonder how will that play out for my kids and your kids thirty years from now.

Your explanations are excellent. My French mother had to raise my brother and me in the United States so it was a whole different world. While my family embraced the Christmas traditions, we did our best to ignore Halloween. (My mother would explain how ridiculous such events were.) I never went trick or treating and didn't want to, although we did keep candy on hand for children who showed up. I just found it all stupid. We had no interest in Thanksgiving either but had a big meal on that day just because. After about 10 years of turkey we decided that we had no reason to eat it anymore since nobody really liked it. Just a roast chicken, or better yet, seafood was what we wanted. The moment I finished university, I moved to France which was my "real" country (my brother remained in the United States and is 99% American.). I love the French traditions and since my mother was from Lorraine, we even had Saint Nicolas on December 6th, even more important since it was also my mother's birthday. As for the mega meals on the 24th and 31st, we scaled them back and broke with tradition. The trick is to have all of the desired decadent starters (oysters, foie gras or whatever) and then skip from there to the desserts. No need for the giant main item, although a nice salad or potato dish can be appropriate and appreciated. But basically, now that I am much older and live alone, I indulge only in what I want on festive days, refuse invitations that have any risk of unwanted excess, and just wait for it all to be finished.

The sloping walls were one of the reasons why I decided in favour of a cargo trailer😅. Simply a white box. There's still plenty of space in the kitchen behind the table to hang a few spices on the wall. And a narrow shelf for a little more storage space and organising. 🤔😚

That's a cute camper conversion. In case you want something bigger as a rain cover. I opted for the “Elbe” from Obelink. It's easy to put up, gives you a lot of headroom and if you get height-adjustable poles, you can lower it even further in strong winds. Greetings from Germany😘

That is fabulous! Well Done! If you go to Spain try to head to Benalmadena, Malaga in the winter. It is usually so warm and you can find many free places to camp. It has a fabulous beach, gorgeous marina, beautiful park (Paloma). I have spent the last 2 winters there. Have fun! x

I was impressed with your pronunciations of place names. most Vloggers make a right dogs dinner of them. hopefully you will return and catch up on all the attractions that you missed. 2 good dates to try and visit on are ... 9th of May, which is our Liberation Day from German Occupation. where we have a big party with food stalls and lots of live music and dancing. the other date is the 9th to the 11th of August for the Battle of Flowers. this is a carnival of floats covered in flowers made by different organizations and schools. there is a day parade and a night time one with fireworks. there is also a fun fair set up for that week too.

FYI: for good, wholesome, tasteful products I go to my local french shops, markets or straight to the farm... It's the naughty "foute" products I miss most! And mature Dutch cheese! Everything can be bought on the internet nowadays, which is great! But when visiting friends and family in the Netherlands, I definitely need to go to the supermarket, simply out of nostalgia 😁
