Some of these things might convince you to get one, and some could be a reason for you to pass on it. For me, there is only one thing or reason that will make me think twice about having the Epiphone casino, which is reason number 8. Let me know yours in the comments.

Have someone hold the toggle switch while you play and see if that stops the rattle. Those toggle switches (often in the middle position) can rattle like that. Having someone hold it while you play will either confirm that's it, or rule that out as the source of vibration.
For anyone put off by the fret access, you could try a post-'68 Gibson 330 which has the same layout as a 335. For true 330/Casino devotees however, these are a poor compromise, but you pays yer money etc.
I love the Yamaha guitars and guitar amps since 1979
the rattle on my casino is from the 3 way switch. worse in centre position.
Hi Bert, nice video respecting what i think important things about a guitar, in this case your Epi Casino. Funny thing is, i bought a year ago an D'angelico Excel Mini DC, which i very like for most of exact your numbered reasons. And mine also have had a sometimes disgusting rattle inside. I also tought it could be something of the electronics, but recently i find out it was the cable jack, it was loose!!! 😅
Mine makes the same rattle. It’s a Korean made 1996 guitar. But I don’t play unplugged any more because I was getting sloppy and when I would plug in, I was making a lot of noise. I bought a Blackstar HT-1R and a Boss Katana Go so I’m always playing through something. So the rattle doesn’t annoy me any more.
I have a 1960's Hofner 4575 (it's like a three pickup Verithin) which has a neck and body join like this. It is indeed a very thin guitar - less than an inch and a quarter at the body edge - so it's possible I can get a little bit further up the neck than you, but I like the way I can't play it the same as my other guitars; like you, I find it makes me take different musical paths.
#8... don't care. i agree it's important to point out to a prospective buyer, but just consider that Hendrix played a flipped Strat that pretty much did the same thing to high register access and he revolutionized the instrument. limitations enable art as some examples you gave make clear.
I'm almost certain the buzzing is coming from the intonation screws in the bridge. My Gretsch does this
Use a light wax, e.g. lanolin to stop the vibration
My Firefly does it too.
I have never seen anyone explain why the neck join on a Casino/330 is at the 17th fret. In my view it is to balance the guitar. The 335 came first with the 19 fret neck join. If you have ever played a 330 with the 19 fret join (produced for a couple of years in the late 60s) you will have experienced the colossal neck dive. A Casino has much less body mass to balance the neck than a 335, so needs a shorter neck.
Maybe the vibration is coming from the adjustable bridge?
Try dampening the strings behind the bridge, velcro works well for this. I did it on my Jazzmaster.
I bought a Worn black 2 years ago. It's great. Try dropping a roller bridge onto the pins, I prefer it.
The buzzing is likely coming from the switch, especially when the switch is in the center position.
They are nice but yeah the limited upper fret access is a deal breaker for me as I like to solo a lot in that area. The other issues are that the pickup height can't be adjusted with the cover being screwed into the body. And the other thing I dislike about hollowbody designs are if you need to repair an electronic issue you need to fish out the entire wired assembly of the pickups, pots and switches through the pickup cavity to address the issue...quite an unpleasant task!
Yeah, I can only imagine how hard it would be to work inside the f-hole.
My son has always enjoyed playing my 1967 Gibson ES 330, so when I saw a used Epiphone Casino (same model as yours) I got it for him. Much lighter than my 330, the finish is very different, but I would say the Casino is even more reasonant unplugged. He absolutely loves it. My 330 neck joins the body in the same spot, so I have the same issues, and I also quickly learned that due to being completely hollow, it feeds back if you play at high volume. Still, those P90 pickups are fantastic. I've owned my 330 since 1978, and it's my favorite, as you said the perfect couch guitar.
It's always nice to see kids getting into guitars, especially with such a classic. 🙂
Every man’s fear Going through the F hole 😂
lolz 😂
If it's Chinese, then a Filipino has just put money in the hands of the People's Liberation Army. Much the same as Israelis joining "Jews for Hitler".
I have one and find it a great guitar. Yes, upper fret access is not the best, but I have other guitars if I need higher access and it does have a slight rattle, but nowhere near as badly as yours. It sounds like a wire somewhere. Perhaps try padding or securing them when the pickups are out as far as you can access.
Thanks for sharing!
I don't know what is rattling but I've got two Casinos and they both have exactly the same noise......
In 2014 I purchased a Casino at Guitar Center, I paid $520 new at the time. My local store didn't have any in stock, it was ordered for me. The day I picked it up, I naturally wanted to try it out in the store. A quick check looked to be in perfect condition. I plugged it in a amp and started to tune it up. However there was a guy doing his best Megadeath/Metallica Impression with his girlfriend audience. The windows were rattling, I couldn't hear crap. Frustrated, I just left with the guitar. At home I tuned it up played a little, seemed all was well. Over the next few days I noticed while playing chords, as I moved up the neck it sounded out of tune. I'd retune and continue. I did a video with the Casino and sent to my guitar buddy. First thing he said the guitar sounded sickly. I took it back to GC, explained the problem I was having and their tech looked at it. I think he adjusted the truss rod. I kind of put it to the side at home, I should of returned it. After some time I picked it up again, still sounded ill. I decided to replace the tuners. That didn't help I started thinking the neck was warped. Then the "E" logo fell off the pickguard. I started looking at this guitar as a $500 piece of Wall Art. I had purchased an Epiphone case for it as well, more money down the tubes. Finally I was fed up, grabbed the guitar off to GC. I sold it back to them, took a beating on it. That was in 2016, a mere two years of ownership. I got $270 for it, case and all. I will never buy another Epiphone product again. I play a 1966 Jazzmaster. I got it new. Neck as never been touched, action is great, plays like a champ. Nearly 60 years old, stock, no upgrades.
Mine is a 1999 Korean made, I added Lindy Fraylin p-90's it is so light and loud I don't worry about the 3 notes that are hard to reach. I have 15 guitars and this one punches well above it's weight class. And it's a Beatle guitar.
Did the Fralin P90s gave it a better sound compare to the stock pickups?
@@bertsguitarchannel I paid 200$ for the fralins and they make it an amazing sounding guitar, much higher output and definition. so worth the money to me.
Great gob Bert! Thank you for the information.
You are welcome!
Thank you, good video. I've had my Epi for 25 years, still my favourite guitar in terms of versatility, tone, and feel. Strats and Teles have their distinct charms but I always come back to the Epi. The more you play one, the better it sounds, especially as an acoustic. I added a Bigsby, the guitar reacts well. A few years ago, I experienced the same strange buzzing that you mention. Eventually that stopped, I'm still not sure why. Another plus is the portability - I've lived and worked in many countries and the Epi makes a great travel companion: light, beautiful looking, and sounds fine unplugged. Add a basic multi FX box and you're good to sit in with just about any bar band, should the occasion arise. Many times, in many places, I've opened my battered guitar case to gasps of "Wow, nice!". And hey, if an Epi was good enough for the Boys, it's good enough for me. And for you, la'.
Thanks for the love for the Casino! Btw, is yours made in the USA?
I had 2, they were really close. I then dropped on the Gibson made USA Epi Casino. Still have it, play it, main guitar.
Wow, I hope I can have a USA made one someday. 🙂
The Pick guard, pickups or bridge (one of the saddles) may be rattling.
Also, try both loosening and tightening screws to stop the rattles. To stop the rattle on mine, I needed to loosen the bridge pickup cover slightly. (Tightening had made it worse)
the saddle screws work loose and rattle, that is what I was hearing.
Try the Epiphone Casino Coupe. It's smaller than the regular Casino, and has 22 frets and a 21.8-fret cutaway. I have zero tolerance of any electric guitar that has less than a 21-fret cutaway. The tone of the Coupe is slightly different from the full-size Casino - a bit raspier, which is good. As for the noise, it could be from the frets. Check to make sure that there is a slight bowing of the fretboard. Press the 5th. finger of your left hand on the third fret of a string, and the the 5th. finger of your right hand on the fifteenth fret of the same string, and look at, and press, the space over the 8th. fret. There should be a small amount of clearance. If not, loosen the truss rod. The slight bowing of the neck allows me to set the strings way lower than average. I made a set of string height makers out of cardboard, and measured from the 21st. fret of my guitars to the top of the strings, and I used them for the string height of all seven of my electric guitars.
Now I'm really intrigue for a Coupe...🙂
@@bertsguitarchannel / Ihope you check out the action on your Casino and get rid of that buzzing. I was one of the first to buy the Casino Coupe when it debued in August 2014. It is a very exciting guitar. There's an excellent video comparing the regular Casino to the newer Coupe, by Jack Fossett: "Epiphone Casino Worn vs. Casino Coupe!" ua-cam.com/video/pVN15BQWPC8/v-deo.html
The Vox Bobcat is similar to the Casino but with 21 fret access. There are other differences that set the Vox Bobcat apart from the Casino, including pickup configuration options (V90 and S66) and a volute!
@@mjkelly7502 / The Vox Bobcat is related to the Gibson ES-335, in the semi-acoustic class, but with a spruce center block instead of maple. The Epiphone Casino and the Casino Coupe are fully hollow, and in the archtop class. There are not many archtops with 21-fret cutaway cutaways, but the Casino Coupe is an exception.
Clickbait.
sorry if you find it as clickbait. When I made this, I never seen anyone talked about these points. That's why I put it 'brutal thruths' and 'deal breaker'. But thanks for your feedback.
@@bertsguitarchannel Correction: I didn't find it clickbait, it was clickbait. A Casino being a lightweight instrument isn't a' brutal truth'.
I may go with the Heritage H530 over Casino or 330 because of the fret access. I like satin, open-pore finishes. My Les Paul Special is like that. There are cameras(endoscope) you can put in the f holes to inspect that don't cost that much. It may be the tailpiece though.
I agree, the satin finishes are much nicer to play!
How about one of the new Gretsch Pristine semis? Good fret access, P90's (with little metal frames around them, which looks great) and some beautiful finishes!
I am still trying to find the rattle on my guitar. I am wondering if it is the tailpiece?
My tip is to check on all screws and mechanisms if they are loose when you change strings.
@ThatOneGuy-l3l Thanks.
I have several Gibsons, Fenders, PRSs, Taylors and other expensive guitars and I say, without reservation, that the Epiphone Les Paul Special is one of the best guitars I own.
Hi Bert and thanks for your review. I used to own a Fender Cabronita Telecaster. It was my No 1 gigging guitar. Then I bought one of these Squiers. On a comparison, it felt better, sounded better and played better than the Fender. So three years ago I sold the Fender, and now the Squier Paranormal Cab Tele is my number 1 gigging guitar. BTW I also own a Gibson Les Paul Standard, a Duesenberg Starplayer, Fender US Strat, Gretsch Anniversary and Mexican Baja Tele. Played them all live and they are good. But I like the Squier above all of them. A remarkable instrument.
Thanks for sharing your input about how good this guitar really is! 😊👍
But the headstock shape doesn't fit with strat kind of PRS Silver sky
Blimey that sounds lovely
Thanks!
Wow... They're so different. Makes sense... They both have specialized pickups. I prefer the Jag, personally. Both sound great though.
Thank you for this video. I’m looking at getting a Mustang and this has helped convince me to go for it (despite the small negatives). Nice (un-pretentious) presentation. Thanks again.
Glad the video could help. Enjoy router Mustang and Merry Christmas!
I have the same guitar. I definitely hear a difference. The Burstbucker sound is more like the classic rock sound I grew up on, a little reedier. I like the versatility of the Trads though, particularly the coil split options. To me it sounds like your burstbuckers have more sustain. I get what sounds like fret buzz on mine but is apparently caused by the pickups. The tradbuckers have strong alnico Vs in them and they interact with the strings unless you have them screwed way down. Almost sounds like a rattling, but there's nothing loose and it even does it at the 22nd fret, so it's not coming from the fretboard. Through an amp it's not an issue for me and I'm happy overall, but unplugged it's very noticeable.
All of my guitars have those sound switching features as well. Its called equalizer
what kind of amp are you using? and what pickups? are they just the stock gibson pickups? i want to get this tone, its so smooth
i just used an amp plugin neural dsp toneking imperial with a little reverb and delay. The pickups are all stock gibson. They are really good sounding.
This guitar sounds the best out of all. And the way you play it is very lovely
Thanks!
Killer tone
Thanks!😊
The history and artist association is really a hurdle for me. I love P90 pickups because of 1950s blues which i play and i can't bring myself to play a guitar with modern looks although it might be a better guitar than a Gibson style guitar. Stupid, but can't get over it.
Wich is more better the gibson sh standar or epiphone sg costum?
I prefer the Gibson SG standard
I actually unsubscribed from Rhett’s channel about a year ago or so. It got to a point where he seemed to have a condescending bias about certain brands, and this video highlights a lot of that. It’s a shame, because I used to like his channel years back.
Thanks for the input!
