Half Fast Hugo

I'm fast but, I'm not that fast, just half fast! An old guy who rides his bike whenever he can and trying to prove that you're never too old to ride! I've had a heart attack, a titanium hip, and a host of other things but you have to keep moving!

Old Guys Mountain Biking - Chunky Piedmont - Duluth
The boys and I got out for another skinny tire ride before the snow flies. We were able to spin the mountain bikes around the Piedmont trail system one last time. Although, there's a slight possibility of one more ride tomorrow depending upon the overnight temps. When it drops below freezing overnight and above freezing during the days, the trails can get really sloppy and soft in a hurry.
This was just a short little five miler through Piedmont. on the Ibis Exie to take in some of the rocks and roots that are plentiful in the trail system. Temps were in the upper 30's (F) but it's still always great to get out. Normally we would have some snow on the ground and would have already been in the freeze/thaw cycle but, we'll take what we can get! I appreciate you riding along. Feel free to LIKE, SUBSCRIBE, and SHARE. However, and most importantly, go ride your bike! Thanks for watching!

Mountain Biking Minnesota - Make Ready the Fat Bikes!
Переглядів 31021 годину тому
Hard to believe it's the middle of November in northern Minnesota. We're still able to get out on the mountain bikes although probably not for much longer. Took a spin on the MTBs with Jim and my son today. It's always a great day when you get out on the trails and today was no exception. I haven't been out in about three weeks due to getting sick and trying to finish up the interior of my new ...
Mountain Biking Bentonville - All American

Decided to make a quick mountain biking run down to Bentonville last week and this video is a run down All American and showing some of the extensive damage from the tornado that happened when I was down there in May for the Bentonville Bicycle Festival. The amount of damage is staggering for what seemed like such a quick tornado! Anyhow, my main focus on this trip was to get some practice in a...
Mountain Biking Bentonville - Tristan's Trail - Slaughter Pen

Adding to my library of Bentonville, AR mountain bike trails. This one is just a quick run down Tristan's Trail on the Pivot Shuttle SL. If you want to mountain bike down in Slaughter Pen phase one and/or head to the skills park, Tristan's Trail is a nice alternative to All American. The All American trail is still awesome but it seems to be more broken up now and sections have been closed the ...
Mountain Biking for Seniors - Tioga Recreation Area

Jay and I decided to run out to Tioga Recreation Area to get in a little mountain biking in the Fall leaves, and hopefully a little less wind. It was a high wind warning day with gusts into the upper 20's and it looked to be clearing up a little sooner out in the Grand Rapids, MN area so I loaded up the Ibis Exie and headed out. Temperatures were running in the low 50's and probably in the fort...
Minnesota Mountain Biking - Old Guy Having Fun!

Decided to mountain bike Mission Creek and head down the Indigenous Land trail. I'm a senior citizen and generally and old mountain biker! That being said, I might have to have a shoulder replacement in the coming months so I decided to do a fairly easy ride today. Finished up at just over 20 miles but it was easy rolling with some climbing but, not a lot of chunk to go easy on my shoulder. Thi...

Mountain biking in your sixties can make you a little cautious at times! I do like the rush and thrill of speed and doing what might sometimes be considered stupid things on a mountain bike. I wasn't sure where we were riding today so I just threw my Ibis Exie in the van as it's typically. my go to bike anyhow. We ended up rolling around Piedmont and Brewer where the Exie works on a lot of the ...

I completed the Race Across Duluth last Saturday so I've been kind of doing shorter rides this week. Today, I decided to pedal the Ibis Exie for a spin around Mission Creek. I've got lots of videos of these trails but, some of the. best are when the leaves are changing. Some have already started to fall but we're not even close to the colors yet. I'm sure I'll post another video when the time c...

Mountain bike trails in Duluth, MN are awesome and COGGS, does a fantastic job supporting them and creating events for the trails. The Race Across Duluth is no different. The second running of the event was awesome! The course runs through the single track through the city starting in the east end at Lester Park and ending at Chamber Grove Park to the west with about 45 miles in between and abo...

Mountain biking in the Tioga Recreation area is always a good time. I had the opportunity to meet with some family at Rapids Brewing in Grand Rapids, MN which is right next to Cohasset and the Tioga Recreation Area. Yup, I'm a senior. 62 this year and this video shows some old guys taking in Duluth mountain biking! This is clip of a ride through Ely's Peak in Duluth, MN with a fun rock roll and towards the end, a ride down Porcupine Passage with Byron who's a couple years older than me. Kind of cool to find another old guy still riding mountain bikes and hitting jumps. I don't heal as fast as I used to but...

Great video. All American is one of my favorites. The castle is a great trail network and well worth the climb to get there.
For sure! All good trails! I like Hand Cut Hollow as well but, you do have to climb up. Thanks for watching!
You are an inspiration!! I’m 48 and just started mountain biking this past summer and I can’t get enough!! I’m not as great at it as you are and still have a lot of fear but I’m out there! You’ve gained a subscriber! Keep being awesome
Much appreciated! It is addictive and keeps me motivated. Thanks for watching and subscribing!! Ride on!
Long way from the milk crate we used for yrs. with dirt bikes. Oh and the milk crate works on e mtn bikes as well. Readily available and double duty as storage bins.
For sure, and a lot cheaper too! Thanks for watching!
@@halffasthugo Enjoy your rides and videos. Never traveled to your neck of the woods. Been up to Whistler and Squamish though. Mostly stay south around ark. louisiana and miss. lil bit of tx. I`m from Louisiana not much rocks and mtn. here. We got them rooooots though.
Was up in June of this yr. 2 wks. after the storm. Damage was unbelievable. Only about 8 trails were open. Opt. to ride down at Devils Den. Bentonville is nice riding whether you are mtn. biking, gravel riding or the greenway. Disney world for bikers for sure. Wish you well with your shoulder. I`m 72 and have a right one that needs some love. E bikes I build and ride make the difference at our age. Cheers.
Should surgery eval at Mayo in January! Thanks for watching!
Nice....since I ride by myself I missed some trails there. I'll have to hit those now that I know where they are.
I just ordered one, how stable is it on the grass?
I actually haven't tried it on grass. I guess it would depend upon how soft or deep the grass is. I've only used it in my garage. Thanks for watching!
Great footage! Been there a few times. Always fun!👍🏻
For sure. Lots of fun trails and they're building news ones all the time. Thanks for watching!
No 🌪️this tome
For sure!!
Bentonville is on the bucket list.
Definitely some fun riding and a lot of trails in the area for all skill levels! Thanks for watching!
Great riding! I love the cooler temps for riding!
Thanks! The temps have been awesome! 59F on today's ride. Thanks for watching!
Ha, this popped up on my UA-cam feed. I’m 64, still ride. I do trail and down hill bike parks. I’m ALWAYS the oldest dude out there. You give me hope.
Yup! Gotta keep riding on!! Thanks for watching!!
looks like you are on a ebike .... why not telling us about it ?
On that ride I was on my Ibis Exie which is not an ebike. I do have an eMTB, a Pivot Shuttle SL, which you can find a quick review of on my channel. Thanks for watching!
Whats up Hugo , those are really pretty trails , "nice & flowy" good job , tks for the vid !
Thanks for watching!
I've only ridden that trail in the winter and in the opposite direction. I'll have to try it again going the direction that you went. It would be bad to be going downhill fast, come around a corner, and encounter a hiker (walking a dog?). There's not much room on those high exposure sections.
It's definitely fun going downhill! I've ridden it both ways and it's much more fun going down. However, I've also ran into hikers/bikers in both directions which does make it sketchy! Thanks for watching!
What brand and model are you riding?I haven’t written my like new mountain bike in over four years and I’m thinking about getting electric mountain bike so I can get some fresh air and exercise. I just need a little boost to get over those hills.
In this video I'm riding a Reeb Sqweeb. My eMTB is a Pivot Shuttle SL. There are a lot of really good eMTBs out there if you're looking for one. Prices are starting to come down too! Thanks for watching. Ride on!
@@halffasthugo I might buy one of these Yamaha bikes that are on sale. They look good enough for driving on dirt roads out here in the southwest. Thanks for the reply and have a great day.
Another great ride for you Hugo. I'll be up in a week or two. Maybe I can grab a ride with ya! We met at a trail head for Piedmont.
Sounds like a plan!
Umm, maybe if your 4ft tall, its way too low!
That is one thing that sucks about it!
Pull up a chair and sit down.
Pull up a chair.
That was such an amazing day on the bike. We drove up from Northfield to participate.
Definitely fun! Ididaride in January down in FL is a fun one too, with 1/3 of the climbing. Thanks for watching!
Just subscribed Hugo. Keep on keepin on dude!!!!!
Much appreciated! Thanks for watching!
Nice job Byron!! 🎉
Nice ride , seems like a nice trail system with a bit of everything ! I'll turn 67 this weekend & can't wait to hit my local chunky trails ! Hey iam gonna do this as long as possible, don't ever wanna stop ! Rock on Hugo 👍
The Piedmont Trail system does offer a bit of everything. I normally like the chunky stuff a lot but, I have some serious arthritis in my shoulder right now that makes it super annoying. Oh well, still pedaling! Thanks for watching and ride on!!
Keep going Hugo!!!!! Getting an Exie soon!!!! Made in the USA!!! HOPE YOUR SHOULDER IS ALRIGHT. I NEED A NEW HIP AND I HAD A REEB SQUEEB TOO!!! YOU AND I HAVE ALOT IN COMMON DUDE!!! JUST TURNED 59. SOOOO........ NEED A HIP. GETTING AN EXIE AND HAD A SQUEEB. I SAW YOUR REVIEW ON THE EXIE AND AFTER WATCHING IT, YOU BLEW ME AWAY!!!! RIGHT ON HUGO!!!!! RIGHT ON!!!!!! RUBBER SIDE DOWN!!!!
SOMEBODY PLEASE try to help BENNY-k5f !!!! He sounds like He is about to do a BRODY OFF THE HIGH SIDE!!
Can't pray it away. At the least I need a pop top camper. See, I'm in West Palm Beach FL and rent is about 1500$ a month for a one room bad neighborhood. Spent my money buried my mom. On disability. Barely getting by. Gov housing is full. I'm not able to make it on skid row. Epilepsy and health problems. So ....BOOM. the ride on the ridge.
@@Benny-k5f There has GOT to be somebody or some org that give you a hand UP. BE WELL & SAFE!
Thanks. Your one of the good ones @@jtc1947

Oh yeah Hugo, you should see droid. Andy brawn. Been through a million drug addiction problems ad finally got clean for more than a a couple years. Both arms and chest covered in ink, married rides a Harley, hard core cigarette smoker. He's nuts.
Yeah, I want to ride. I have a electric assist mountain monster. I love that area but never hit that trail. Hook me up. Ok huggy. I'll wait for the go ahead. Dale Lezenski.
Right on Hugo, keep it up!
Thanks for watching! Ride on!
Hey Hugo.. I just discovered your feed... love it... we are same age... I Mt bike AND rock and ice climb... so happy I can still at this age.. What is that buzz sound coming from your bike when your coasting?
Awesome!! You have to keep moving! The buzzing sound is the Industry 9 rear hub when I'm not pedaling. My bikes either have the buzzing I9 hubs or Onyx hubs which are silent. Thanks for watching!
Glad to see another fellow biker NOT on a E bike !
I do have an ebike but I almost always grab one of my analog bikes. The ebike can be fun but I mainly use it for days when I'm beat but still want to ride. I log way more miles on my analog bike! Thanks for watching! Ride on!
Nice job. I’m not sure I could do it? Might have to try someday, not race though. Ride on 🤘
I'm sure you can! You just have to pace yourself. My goal was to finish the ride and not as a race. I did shave 45 minutes off of last year's ride so I was happy with that! Ride on!

Would you recommend riding the traverse in that direction? I've heard a lot of people say to rideitfrom Mission Creek to Lester
I've ridden it both ways and don't really have a preference. It seems a little better starting at Mission but they both end with a downhill run. Fun either way though. Thanks for watching and ride on!
I bought the new Pivot Shuttle AM this spring. I’m 54 and just rode Jackpot/HighClimber for the second time in three weeks. That is one of the best trails in MN and as a Clyde I wouldn’t be able to do this trail without the e-bike. I use it at Cuyuna as well. I still ride my analog bike on all the MORC trails. I use the eco assist mode the most. The people that say it is cheating have never ridden one. I rode 32 miles today and I was sweat soaked and tired when we were done. I have ridden the SL and it is an absolute rocket ship. Love that bike!!
Whats up Hugo ? Great riding my man , iam just about to turn 67 and still riding , been at it for about 27yrs. , still climbing, jumping & dropping , you gotta love it ! Totally addictive & cant wait to hit the trails again . The trick is "never stop" . Age is only a number . Thanks for the video ! Happy Trails
Much appreciated! Age is just a number. I look in the mirror and say who the heck is that guy. Thanks for watching and ride on!
I'm 51, you are my new hero!!!
No hero! Just an old guy who pushes the limits! Thanks for watching!
Great video! I really hope to do this race next year.
You should! It's a fun ride. Long, but fun! Well supported with snacks and drinks and great a great experience on Duluth trails. Thanks for watching!
Nice, go get it Half Fast!
Thanks! I was a good ride and I shaved 45 minutes off of last year! Thanks for watching!
24:32 need to come up and do that with you, looks fun.
You should! There were a quite a few ebikes too! A little more climbing than the Ididaride though, by about 3,000'.
@@halffasthugo Why would ebikes be allowed in a race like this 🤣
@@fromthesky1050 I guess because it can be done as a fun ride or a race since the entry fees go to support the trails. Not sure if the ebikes are even allowed in the actual race category or not. The individuals who came in first did it in just about 3 hours and 20 minutes on a regular bike!
Go Hugo! I'm 61 too and I have several eMTB's (full power and lightweight, one with a Fazua motor like yours.) I ride with peddle biker groups with power low or off like you mentioned. I've also been surprised how much of a workout one can get on even a full power emtb if pushing hard, especially if riding terrain with elevation (e.g. mountains). My average heart rate for most ebike rides is 80-85% of max (average) for the entire typical 90 minutes and.....it's actually fun. My resting heart rate has dropped from mid 60's to high 40's in two years of assertive ebike riding. Best part is anyone can adjust the power level to what is comfortable for them and build up over time.
Totally agree! My RHR is now running around 47-48. You definitely get a good workout. I did a 45 mile ride on my analog bike today and shaved almost an hour off of last years time! Thanks for watching!
Great video! I'm 66 and really want to get an e-mtb. The knees aren't what they used to be. However, even class 1 bikes are not allowed on almost all trails here in S AZ. Just want some assistance on the climbs.
Yeah, I had heard the same thing when I was at the Sedona MTB Festival. Definitely a bummer as I don't think it is any more of an environmental impact than a regular MTB. I do feel your pain though as I'm going to need a new shoulder soon. Thanks for watching!
Are u riging an Emtb? Seems like you do,
I ride both a regular mountain bike and an emtb. On this ride, was on my emtb for sure. Thanks for watching!
62 yr old here. Just got my first E-MTB (Trek Rail) a month ago. Been riding mountain bikes since the 80’s. Loving it so far. My heart rate shoots up just as fast on the e-bike. I hit 188 yesterday. I find that I ride just as hard. I am riding at 8000 feet though. Good stuff!
That is awesome! I find that I go much faster on the eMTB for the same heart rate. Thanks for watching!
Hugo, just found your channel. Subscribed! 63 yr old. I have a Domane+ (ebike) for gravel and road. Have a full suspension top fuel for trail riding. Different tools for different goals! Liking your videos. I’m wondering if I should add some additional protection for injury prevention? Finding recovery much slower than it used to be!! What gear do you wear on a typical ride? Thanks
Thanks for watching and subscribing! Much appreciated! For injury protection, I always wear good MIPS helmets. I have different ones for what I'm doing. A full face for bike park days, a Fox Drop Frame that goes below the ear for days when I might do something stupid (although that's most days), and I have my usual XC helmet. I also have an insulated helmet for fat biking. Usually I wear elbow and knee pads if I'm doing some aggressive riding or hitting bike parks. At bike parks, I also wear upper body armor from Dainese which consists of chest, back, shoulder and elbow pads combined. I've often considered a neck brace but, haven't pulled the trigger on one yet. I usually wear aFox or Troy Lee Designs chamois that includes hip padding on aggressive riding days where the risk is increased. The crazy thing is that most of my accidents have happened from stupid situations on mellow trails. Go figure! Ride on!
Useful info, Hugo!
Thanks for watching!
Those brewery meetups are great finish lines from a good ride. Nice vid!
For sure, and we do have some great breweries with trails leading to them! Thanks for watching!
Great riding and a great job making a very nice video. From your videos, I can see that you are very fit. I'm 73 and still enjoy riding singletrack, however, I have slowed somewhat in the last two years. I recently mixed in some weight training, rail-trail riding and yoga to compliment my mountain biking and it has been giving some improvement. I was wondering if you have some exercise routine you use to keep yourself in shape for riding.
I was doing the MTB Fit app which I'm considering going back to soon. I do like to mix up weight training. Currently, I'm following the Barbell Prescription in book format but Sully also has a UA-cam channel you follow. Whatever you do, you have to keep moving! I've fallen on quite a few jumps and from just doing stupid things but the weight training has certainly protected my joints and kept me from getting injured. I do need to step up my stretching though! Ride on and thanks for watching!
@@halffasthugoThank you for taking time to give me some useful tips. I'll make use of the information!
