Mendelssohn is so fascinating to me. It's absolutely not overestimating to claim that he already reached maturity at age 13-14. The only Mendelssohn pieces I've heard which sounded a bit childish, when he seemingly didn't yet have the abillity to work things out fully, were his earliest works from 1820-21. After those - just masterpiece after masterpiece! Think about his wonderful piano quartets, the sextet, his early Concerti (for Piano in A minor, for Violin and Piano in D minor), his Double Concerti for two pianos - it's just undescribably marvellous! His first piano quartet particularly fascinates me, especially the wonderful 2nd movement with its MARVELLOUS climax, oh boy, I just love it! It's one of the most magical, haunting and bloody-beautiful moments in all of classical music, and it's brought to us by a 13 year-old boy! You can also hear that young Felix must have been very hooked and impressed by Hummel - the first movement hear seems to me as if it was inspired by the first movement of Hummel's Piano Quintet in E-flat minor Op. 87, but Felix uses the given material in a very mature way, not just writing a cheap hommage, but instead using it as guidelines for his own creative journey. I'm wondering what Beethoven and Schubert would have thought about young Felix' art. At the time he composed his first masterpieces, beginning at 1822, Beethoven, Schubert, Hummel, Weber and co were all still alive so it could be possible that they heard performances of Mendelssohn pieces or read his scores, or at least knew of his existence. Could anybody provide me with fourhter information about that?

I enjoy telling people about these Church/ "Epistle" sonatas. Not many people are familiar with them and they are soothing.

Not the most brilliant piece by Mozart. Probably a commission that he wrote in a haste.

Mendelssohn really was a greater prodigy than Mozart if we’re being honest when you compare compositions at the same age. The octet and midsummersnight dream are all teenaged pieces too.
